The DI Warm-Up Race
The Annual DI Warm-Up Race was held
April 25, starting in almost calm conditions but 9 boats persisted with freshening winds that built to the finish for a
challenging day on the water. The PHRF
Spinnaker trophy went to Rick Stanley
on Cherry Baby and the PHRF NonSpinnaker went to RC John Hirsh, sailing his old boat, Sea Dragon, handly beating his wife, Tracy, on the new boat,
Ogopogo. Tracy was first in Non-Spin A
class.
The Easter Bunny paid a visit to FYC and
handed out eggs and candy to a festive
bunch of egg hunters!
Thanks, Finn!
If you happen to be on our beautiful beach, and you
see a sailboat dolly floating in the water right off the
beach, there is a good chance that it is there FOR A
REASON. A sailor has in all likelihood gone out for
sail on one of our small sailboats. Please do not take it upon
yourself to pull that dolly up on the beach. It makes it infinitely
harder for the dinghy sailor if, when returning from his sail, he
has to jump off his boat, run to the beach, grab his dolly, and
bring it back to the water. Pulling a sailor's dolly out of the
water and up onto the beach while he is out in his sailboat is a
hindrance, not a help. That being said, we appreciate your willingness to help and desire to take care of club property!

There are some changes this year. Each session is
1/2 day and you may choose either morning(8-12
noon) or afternoon(1-5pm). There are fewer spots
available each session so that our young sailors
can receive more individualized attention.

Juniors Sail!
April was a learning month for FYC
juniors. There were several free sails
and practices over Spring Break; 3 of
our juniors took advantage of the
Dave Perry Match racing clinic at
SYC midmonth and Camille Mcgriff
attended the girls only Leiter Clinic
at SYC last weekend. Lastly, several of
our juniors were lucky enough to sail
with some very experienced sailors in
the Dauphin Island race.
While pre-start tactics, race rules
and the importance of boat tuning
and sail trim all came into play at the
clinics, the real lesson for this month
was Be Prepared. A GYA junior sailor
is so familiar with their foul weather
gear and life jacket that they are like a
second skin; they learn early to check
the weather forecast, and our juniors
are learning the importance of a sea
worthy vessel.
Our juniors are looking forward to
an exciting race season starting with
Carter Smith, Pete McGriff, and James GYA Opening Regatta at FWYC
Brown, safe and sound back on the
and Sears, Bemis, Smythe at JYC.
dock after sailing in the Dauphin Island
Race as crew on White Trash.
It's always a great experience to meet
other girls from around the nation
whom I have remained close friends
with and to get some of the best
coaching in the nation so that we're
able to get out on the water and
BEAT THOSE BOYS! :)
Thanks, Camille McGriff

Meet our Staff! Nasheena Marie Morning Dove McGivney
By Sabe Fink
Nasheena Marie Morning Dove
McGivney was born early in the morning,
and her dad saw a dove perched just outside the window – thus her unique name.
Years later, Nasheena ended up in Baldwin
County, like so many others, by accident.
“My boyfriend-now my husband –and I
came here from Maine to visit some of his
family at Christmastime in 2007. We
actually wore shorts in December! We
went right back and packed up and
moved.” Nasheena began working at FYC
in 2008, right when the new club opened,
then took a bit of a sabbatical to have her
daughter and her twin boys, returning to
the club in 2011. “I really like working
here,” says Nasheena. “The members are
great, and I like the idea of seeing the
same people and getting to know them.
Of course, the views and the sunsets are
great, too. My only other real job was as a
telemarketer, and I definitely prefer this!”
Nasheena and husband Casey and the
three kids love sports and the outdoors,
and this spring has found them spending
whatever free time they have at the ballpark, with softball and tee-ball. “We also
love to go to the park and the beach
whenever we find the time,” she says. The
family makes a point to return to Maine
at least once a year to visit their families,
and after doing it once in the winter with
three preschoolers, they aim for summertime visits. “When the kids are older it
will be fun to do snow sports, but now it’s
really better to go in warm weather. We’re
going for three weeks the end of June, and
we’re all looking forward to it.”
Casey, an engineer at Austal, is also
studying electrical engineering at UWF, so
the McGivney family is on the go all the
time. “We live in Lake Forest, because it’s
central to all the places we have to be,”
says Nasheena. “We’re able to work out
our schedules so we can do things together, and the kids and I also hang out with
my friends from here, particularly the ones
who also have small children.”
The next time Nasheena waits on you
in the dining room or the bar at the club,
take a minute to let her know how happy
we are that she ended up here in Lower
Alabama and at the Fairhope Yacht Club.

FYC Auxiliary News
A special thank you to
Anne Nix and Kathy
Lambert who co-chaired
the event.
We also had many who
helped with the VIP Sponsor’s
Party and the Skippers party for the
Dauphin Island Race.
It’s been a busy month!
On April 15th we held our first Spring
Fashion Show. It was a sellout crowd!
Our sponsors Cybele’s and C K
Collection presented many lovely fashions modeled by several of our Auxiliary
members. The event was a success due to
the number of our members that contributed their time and effort to pull it
together and to all of you who attended!
Watch for our Cookbook to be available by the first week in May!!
Tracy Hirsh has scheduled our first
luncheon visit to Pensacola Yacht Club
on June 5th. We will meet at FYC at
10:30 for the trip. Please plan to join us.
It’s a guarantee that you will have a good
time!
In June we will start doing Pet photography. If you are interested, please give
Kate Gibson a call (209-4429) to sched-
ule an appointment. We will also have a
planning meeting for the next year’s
activities and projects on May 14. We
will meet at FYC at 4:00. We’d love to
have your input. Please join us.
On June 13th we will be
assisting with the 6th
Annual Children’s Cup
Regatta. Please come
down and enjoy the day at
the club participating in
the race, the silent auction,
the dinner and the music.
On May 6th the Auxiliary is
hosting a very special program.
Christel McCanless will be giving
us a totally absorbing power
point presentation of her life
story. She will take us through
her early days in Germany,
WWII, escaping from Germany
and her life since arriving in
Huntsville. Christel and her husband, George, have been members of FYC for several years.
This program is open to everyone
and extremely interesting. It will
be given from 5:00 pm to 6:00
pm in the Ballroom before the
FYC General Meeting on
Wednesday, May 6.
Club Sailing-The Hemlstadter Report
THURSDAY NIGHT RACES will start Thursday, April 30! The
Score Sheet will be in the book at the Bar. Remember the
Nominal Start Time is 6:30:00 with your handicapped start
time on the sheet. The course is always the same for quick
access on and off the course E-X-SW-S-X-E. The Series runs
all the way to Labor Day so have FUN and enjoy the Sunsets.
4/5/15 I don't know if the Easter
Bunny was there, but there were
enough boats (4) to have an official
race. I understand the winds were a
little fluky. That's my favorite excuse
if I get home late. Anyway Moon
Glade got around 1st (Good job
Tracy) with Patriot 2nd and Arcturus
3rd. Better keep an eye on her as she
is starting to race more often. A newcomer, Nellie Belle was 4th and looks
like she might become a regular.
4/12/15 It didn't look like a good day
for sailing, but I'm told it was really
good with a light to medium wind
from the East which meant very little
waves to slow you down. There were
five boats out to enjoy it. HE'S
BACK!! Gypsy Wind was back out
after a bottom job and some renovations which surely worked as he won
the race. Good show, Jack. Not far
back was Patriot with Damn Yankee in
3rd.
