Time for change: IoD Hampshire and Berkshire Womens’ Network
The IoD Berkshire and Hampshire Womens’
Network is part of a wider initiative to bring
together senior professionals in a way that
encourages more female participation, and a more
even gender mix at senior organisational levels.
The Womens’ Network is for directors who want
to engage on business topics with information
and networking. We currently meet every 6
weeks, 09.00-10.30 in the Winchester area. Our
members drive the agenda, so the objectives of
this group continue to evolve. Rather than pure
networking, the group is about directing activities
for our personal and professional development,
for the local IoD branch, and for the local business
community. We also communicate via a
LinkedIn Group.
One of the members who came along to the
last meet-up for the first time commented: ‘the
meeting this morning was useful and stimulating,
with distinctively more business focus to it than
a lot of networking meetings I have attended’.

The University of Southampton Science Park sponsors our Third
Thursday Networking meetings, held at their premises in Chilworth.
The University of Southampton Science Park is the natural home in the Solent
region for technology-based early-stage businesses and the commercialisation
of scientific research and development. The Park accommodates over 75 tenant

attractively landscaped 45-acre site in Chilworth.

The big economic secret
Graeme Leach – IoD Director of Policy
The 5 significant headwinds are:
Over the past 2-3 months there has been a
consistent run of economic data pointing towards
improved GDP growth this year. This has all come
as something of a surprise to many economic
commentators who have been flailing around
trying to come up with an explanation. They
shouldn’t have been caught by surprise. After
forecasting an L shaped recovery for most of
the past 3 years, in late 2012 I began to upgrade
my GDP forecast for 2013. Why? Because one key economic aggregate had
(1) Debt and de-leveraging. The need for continued balance sheet reduction
in the private sector and deficit reduction in the public sector.
(2) Bank weakness. Normally commercial banks finance economic recovery.
In this cycle their contribution is weaker, hence the need for central bank
intervention with quantitative easing.
(3) The squeeze on household budgets from inflation running ahead of
earnings. The weaker contribution from the household sector is compounded
by the fact that the savings ratio is quite low for the start of a recovery cycle,
with less of an impetus to consumption from a savings rundown.
(4) The on-going threat from the eurocrisis. If it were to intensify over the
2013-14 period (a very real possibility).

So just as the weather warmed up in July, the temperature gauge on the
economy has risen as well. But we shouldn’t get too carried away. M4X provides
a real tailwind to growth but there are 5 pretty big headwinds still flowing

The IoD London and the South East Director of the Year
Awards winners
Businessmen from across the region have emerged victorious from the
London and South East Director of the Year awards.
The awards, which reward directors of companies of all sizes and from a
range of sectors, were presented at a gala night at the Landmark Hotel,
Marylebone, in April.
Rodger Broad, Director for the IoD in the South East, said: “The IoD London
and the South Director of the Year awards serve to remind people just how
talented and driven our region’s business leaders are.
“The South East is the powerhouse of the UK economy and the efforts of
directors such as our winners, along with many, many others around the
region, will help drive the UK’s economic recovery.
John Minards, South East Regional Leader of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP,
title sponsors and sponsors of the Large Company category, said: “These
awards recognise the key individuals of large South East companies that
demonstrate excellence.”

Director of the Year, Public/Third Sector: Brett Wigdortz,
Teach First, London
Brett Wigdortz has led Teach First as its CEO since its launch in July 2002. Teach First is currently the 4th
most prestigious graduate recruiter in the United Kingdom and is working to close the achievement gap
in England and Wales between children from low-income backgrounds and their wealthier peers. Brett
wrote the original business plan for the charity while working as a management consultant at McKinsey &
Company and then took what was originally planned as a six-month leave of absence in February 2002 to
develop and build support for the idea. Previously he has worked as a consultant, a journalist and researcher.
Director of the Year, Family Business: Stephen Blatchford
Chas A Blatchford & Sons, Basingstoke
Stephen Blatchford is CEO of Chas A Blatchford and Sons Ltd., a fourth generation family business founded
in 1890 by Stephen’s great grandfather. The company has two sides to its business - firstly a products
business which manufactures lower limb prosthetic components of which over 75% is exported and
secondly a clinical services business providing prosthetic, orthotic and rehabilitation services to the NHS and

Peter Digby left grammar school early and took up an engineering apprenticeship in the aircraft industry. At

Student Membership
In September 2012, the Institute of Directors opened up its membership
for the first time in over 100 years to the young directors of the future,
creating a new membership category; IoD Student Membership.
IoD student membership provides higher education students, the future
business leaders of this country, a range of benefits to support them in their
studies and future career, giving them a competitive advantage when applying
for jobs or setting up their own business. It provides access to bespoke products,
and networking at exclusive local and national events with todays business
leaders.
Still within a year of inception, IoD student membership has achieved UKwide success, with support for the initiative being seen across a number of
Universities within the UK and Ireland.

What we’ve achieved: Since we were established,
3.8 million young people have taken part in Young

of these have run businesses on our Company
Programme. Latest independent research from
Kingston University Business School in 2012
found that alumni of our Company and Start-up
programmes were almost twice as likely to set up
businesses later in life.

Solent LEP Update:
Solent LEP recently announced the appointment of 6 new board members to fill
vacant seats on the board. The new Board Members will join nine existing Board
Members and take a key role in shaping local economic priorities and securing
funding from central Government and Europe in order to deliver the LEPs
ambition of creating 10,000 new jobs in the Solent.
In June they also announced the launch of a second round of bidding to the
Solent Growing Places Fund. The fund was for major infrastructure projects to
unlock sites that bring forward homes and/or jobs. Bids of £100,000 or above

were invited from both public and private sector organisations. There was a total
of £5.74m available in the funding round under loan, forward funding or equity
funding arrangements and this would be allocated on a competitive basis.
The LEP hoped to allocate the full amount available in the funding round to
allow them to deliver economic growth where it would have the biggest impact.
