PASTOR KEN’S KENNECTION FOR MAY
At our last (April 13) Ministry Leadership
Council we read a letter from David Johnson
resigning from all boards and committees on
which he is presently serving. With regret we
received and accepted his resignation. We will
miss Dave on the MLC and our Transition
Team as he always was a valuable voice of experience and practicality. We pray for his continuing health and renewal. No one has been
appointed to fill his position as Vice-President
and his seat on the Transition Team will not be
filled.
WOW! The Sunset and Seagrapes Fund Raiser for NEW DAY ADULT CARE was a lot of
fun with a lot of great people and a lot of good
food. Many super raffles and silent auction
items. Many dollars raised, too. You really do
want to attend next year’s festival.
Your Call Committee for our next settled Pastor has been formed and approved. The members are Barbara Roemmele, Carri Leininger, Debra Weier, Peter Keith, Tom
Schwartz, Bert Seitz, and John Fortini,
Chair. They have been in touch with our FLGA District President, Rev. Greg Walton, and
our new Circuit Visitor, Rev. Craig Bode, Ft.
Pierce, FL, and are setting their first meeting
date with them. In mid-May they will be in
touch with you asking for your assistance in
several important areas. Now would be a good
time to begin praying for them and the fulfillment of their necessary duties, and their discernment in their conversations with and selection of candidates to present to the congregation.
We just finished providing our facilities for the
Gold Coast Women’s Via de Cristo #90. Our
praise team leader, Janet Cunningham, was
the Rectora (main leader) for the weekend.
Fran Hickman was an attendee and Kathy
McCoy, Karen Hernandez, and Andrea Taylor (member of our praise team) were parts of
the weekend team. Donna Van Bommel, Magdala and Watson Ray, Matt Henshaw, Sharon Wiley, and Karen Terry (sorry if I missed
someone) helped out during the weekend in a
variety of ways.
Diana Bly, congregation secretary and purchasing
agent, put together a new MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY that has the latest home information
we have about you. Update your old “look-book”
with it and double check your own information to
be sure we have it correct in our files. Let us know
if not.
Are you ready? NOAH’S ARK is almost ready to
set sail again to the land of God’s love and promises. It will be lifted and lowered with Noah and
his family, all the animals, and our older PreSchool children on May 14. All aboard!
A National Lutheran Schools Accreditation
Team will be here May 13‐14‐15 to view and
review our facilities, staff, and curriculum. Na‐
tional Lutheran School Accreditation (NLSA)
encourages and recognizes Lutheran schools
that provide quality Christian education and
engage in continuous improvement. NLSA
serves a variety of levels of schools — early

Our thanks to BOB HEATH for his beautiful oil
painting of THE TRANSFIGURATION. We are
not sure where it will be hung, but we won’t hide
it. Bob is largely a self-taught artist. He got a taste
for art at an adult education class in “Beginner's
Oils”' at Avon, Connecticut; and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class at the University of
Connecticut. While employed at Aetna Life Insurance Company, he did sidewalk shows throughout
New England and New York, often receiving bestin-show honors. He and his wife moved to Cape
Cod, where he turned to galleries for representation. At Trinity Lutheran Church (ELS), Brewster,
Cape Cod, MA, he painted the altar; which included six portraits of Biblical characters and a large
painting of the resurrection of Christ. Again,
Thank You, Bob. For a while, The Transfiguration will be in the sanctuary lobby for all to see
and reflect.

The Mission Statement is to be a clear and strong definition of the purpose of Faith Lutheran Church. Your
Transition Team (TT) has shared with you their first proposal for a new Mission Statement in the Faith
News and Notes of the first three Sundays in April. To remind you, it is:
We Believe God Calls Us to Live Christ’s Love.
The one in our weekly news and notes says:
We are Faith Lutheran Church, members of the Body of Jesus Christ. The Holy
Spirit calls us today to share God’s love and grace for your life through worship,
study, fellowship and service.
Some of you may remember your Strategic Ministry Plan adopted March 6, 2004, in which the mission of
Faith Lutheran Church was spelled out as:
Serve Diverse Needs — Sharing Christ Love!
Now that you are thoroughly confused (?) over who’s who and what’s what . . . a task of your TT was to review the present Mission (and Vision) statement and suggest to the congregation to affirm it as is, revise it, or
suggest a replacement. The TT is suggesting a replacement.
In our meeting on April 20, we shared and discussed opinions that the outcomes of our Mission and Vision
seminar on March 8 were ignored in the above suggested statement. Briefly, this is how we came to this statement: we first gathered all the words, phrases and sentences from our TT table leaders. These were compiled
on continuous pages. The words, phrases, sentences were then sorted into various categories of similar concerns, values, referenced weaknesses/strengths, et cetera. These then were sorted in relation to whether we
thought the thoughts were more related to Mission or to Vision (with some crossovers). Using what we
learned, we began crafting statements. [This is how we worked on the proposed Vision Statements, too.]
We had the desire that the Mission Statement not be a paragraph; that it be one, short, sentence [keeping it
short assists in not curving in on one’s self and sharpens focus, foundation, faith and future when finished];
that it be inspirational with both inward-and-outward movement; that it would be easily memorable; that it
would contain no “how to” words; and that it could be easily enlarged into relevant and subservient Vision
statements. The fact that certain words in any Mission Statement may need clarification is scarcely avoidable—most common words have multiple, acceptable definitions; especially words like live and love.
Now, we cannot dilly dally with this. The congregational profile for our Call should include a Mission Statement and Vision Statements.
And we do not want to stop the dialogue with you. Continue your sharing of your thoughts. We love to have
suggestions. Remember what kind of a Mission Statement we desire (see above paragraph), write it/them out
(don’t trust our memories), and pass them on to a TT member, so that we can share more in our next meeting.
Thank you so very, very much.

One of the primary topics of the April 22, Board of Discipleship meeting was our SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE. Worship times and styles are not an unfamiliar subject for dialogue within this Board
because our attendance fluctuates greatly during the year due to our Winter and Spring Guests and Summer
vacations, and because we have at least two if not three worship styles to provide time for expression.
Many of you suggested in our Easter Sunday Opinionaire that we stay with our present 3-SERVICEAND-STYLES SCHEDULE. We did not think that a good idea as the resulting preparations for the historically low Summer numbers puts a lot of work on everyone for a low attendance (when divided by 3) environment.
Even though, in many ways, a 1-SERVICE SCHEDULE would be most logical for pastors, musicians,
and attendees—our consensus was that one service would need to be a mix of traditional and contemporary
styles (we didn’t think alternating styles a good idea and neither did you). We gave a lot of thought and dialogue to this option. We considered the difference the worship potential this summer would be compared to
last, and that we did average 107 worshipers for those 10 Sundays. Yet, we just didn’t feel comfortable, thinking that most of our members would not like that format and therefore would not be well served most of the
time with such a mixture, to choose it as we did last Summer.
Therefore, it was decided to use a 2-SERVICE-AND-STYLES SCHEDULE.
Secondly, it was decided these times would be at 9:30 a.m. and
11:00 a.m. These were the most preferred times of those who wanted 2
services.
Third, it was decided this schedule will begin on Sunday, June 14,
and continue through Sunday, August 16 (10 Sundays). Except for the
first Sunday, this schedule corresponds to the Summer Vacation of our
Palm Beach County Schools—June 4 through August 17.
Finally, it was decided that a traditional style Divine Service
would be held at 9:30 a.m., and a contemporary style Divine Service
would be held at 11:00 a.m. This was our last decision as it was the most difficult one to make for this schedule.
While this was not an objective, it turns out this schedule is a 90-minute move of start times for all three
groups of attendees.
That’s where we are now. The Board of Discipleship would like to put this decision to rest. HOWEVER,
we know there are many of you who have an opinion about this sensitive issue. We would like to hear your
opinions. Speak with one of our Board of Discipleship members: Lou Raffa, chair, Trisha Shankin, Debbie
Weier, Don Rousseau, Walt Wiley, and Ben Schuemann, ex-officio. Or, you may email your opinion(s) to
Pastor Ken, [email protected], and he will forward it to all our Board members.

STEWARDSHIPENCOURAGEMENTfromourLCMS—May,2015
We pray in the Lord’s Prayer for daily bread.
The Small Catechism teaches that “Daily bread
includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, such as food, drink,
clothing, shoes, house, home, land, animals,
money, goods, a devout husband or wife, devout
children, devout workers, devout and faithful
rulers, good government, good weather, peace,
health, self-control, good reputation, good
friends, faithful neighbors, and the like.” This is
a pretty comprehensive list of what God provides for our daily bread. But all of this, eventually, and finally, will be taken away from us—
not because God is punishing us, but because
this is not the goal of life. There is more to life
than these things. In fact, we will truly live when
all these things are taken away, and we no longer
need to pray for daily bread.
For God our Father in heaven is calling us
home to Himself. We are just sojourners here.
We are on a journey in the wilderness of this
world toward our true home, the land of promise, in heaven. Everything that we have in this
world and this life will be left behind.
But as much as we long for heaven, as much
as we eagerly await that time when our Lord will
take us from this vale of tears to Himself in
heaven, we still struggle with letting go of what
we have in this world. We still suffer the temptation to hold on to this life and this world and the
things of this life and this world. But this is not
our true home. And as good as this life is, and it
is often by God’s grace very good, the life to
come in His kingdom far exceeds it.
And giving, stewardship, is a practice that
teaches us to look to, long for, and trust in the
eternal realities rather than the earthly. It teaches
us to loosen our hold and let go of those things
that keep us earthly minded, so that we may look
what our Father in heaven has in store for us for
all eternity. It teaches us to concentrate on what
God has done, is doing, and will do for us instead of the constant work-a-day world and noise
that we have here. It teaches us to long for that
better country, the heavenly one. For God is not
ashamed to be called our God. And He has prepared for us a city, His city, not made with
hands.
Thus we give generously to the church, to our
family, to those in society. We release our grasp
on what would keep our focus on the here and
now, so that we would be free to receive and rejoice in what our future shall be in heaven. We
invest where moth and rust will not destroy. We
put our treasures so that our hearts will follow
them (Matt 6:21; Luke 12:34). For we are only
of any earthly good, when we are truly heavenly
minded. Make this your practice for your own
good eternally and your neighbors’ good temporally. Faith Lutheran Church presents Dr. Jennifer Pascual in Concert

all combinations of the aforementioned. It helps Lutheran schools evaluate their academic quality and the spiritual dimension of the school.
The standards and report forms are similar to other accrediting processes, both secular and religious and are recognized by many States.
It is an honor to be accredited by NLSA.
