The word ‘Rogation’ comes from a Latin verb ‘rogare’ which means ‘to ask’. A link is made between the resurrection of Jesus which we celebrate on Easter Day, with all that that means about new life, and the new life we seek in our own lives. So on Rogation Sunday we ask for new life in the church, praying that God will call more people to ministry and strengthen and renew existing ministers. By ancient custom we also pray for new life in the growing crops, for a good growing season and a plentiful harvest. In days gone by, the parish priest would lead his people in procession round the boundaries of the parish, chanting special prayers, hymns and psalms, called Rogations, asking for God’s blessing on the seed newly sown and on the growing crops. This, of course, was at a time when people’s lives were led by the seasons. Food was home produced and some had to be stored and preserved to last through the winter. In today’s world of global markets when we are no longer seasonally dependent such ancient customs may be seen as an irrelevance. Yet what is not an irrelevance is our continued dependence on God’s bounty. It’s right to pray for the growing crops: that God will bless them and, as Jesus taught, “Give us this day our daily bread”. It’s right to thank God that we do have enough food and it’s right to show our thanks by sharing our plenty with those who do not have enough to eat. This year on Rogation Sunday, 10th May, we shall be taking a Rogation Walk around Fakenham, starting from the Parish Church at 2.00pm and pausing from time to time to ask God’s blessing on our land, on crops in field and garden. Why not join us? Elaine Burbidge. Parish Prayers Daily prayers are said for Fakenham, its people and organisations at the following times: Mondays at 8.30am; Tuesdays at 9.30am; Wednesdays at 10.00am; Thursdays at the usual Communion service at 9.30am ; Fridays at 10.00am and Saturdays at 9.00am. Please feel free to join us in the chapel in church if you wish, or spend a few minutes in prayer at home or wherever you are at those times. Or just pause and know that you are being prayed for. Please pray for Rev’d Francis Mason and his wife Gill as they prepare for their move to Fakenham and for Francis’ ministry amongst us. During the weeks in May we will also be specifically praying for: 3rd—9th Tourism Those who work on the Industrial Estates. 10th—16th The work of Christian Aid Those who live or work in new developments 17th—23rd Students preparing for / taking exams, SATs... Those who live or work in Church Lanes, Red Lion Court, Lichfield Street, Rosemary Terrace. 24th –30th The work of the church Those who live or work in Norwich Road, Orchard Close. 31st May Induction of Rev’d Francis Mason as Rector of Fakenham with Alethorpe. 31st - 6th June The outreach of the church. Trinity College, Cambridge. Those who live or work in Mission Lane, Barbers Lane, Victoria Lane, Heath Way, Heath Lane. We will continue to use prayers from the weekly Bulletin, available from the back of the church. Other free prayer leaflets are available in the prayer chapel in church. Elaine Christ Church, Fulmodeston In May, as we look forward to Pentecost, we welcome back the Norwich Taizé Group and invite everyone to join us for this atmospheric and contemplative service with instrumental music, song and the power of silence! Please put this and the concert given by the Cwizewicz brothers, Filip and Michal, in your diaries. The recital by these two virtuoso violinists will be a splendid occasion and will last one hour. Make it a lunchtime date! Easter Day service at Fulmodeston Finally, everyone at Christ Church, looks forward to joining with our friends and colleagues at Fakenham Parish Church for the institution and induction of the Revd Francis Mason on May 31st. The shattering of that peaceful Sunday morning left a scene of destruction which, despite the cleansing of the site, remains evident to this day. Thanks to the immediate response of our local fire-fighters, supplemented by crews from right round the county, lives were saved, adjacent properties protected and the inferno contained from spreading a matter of yards into the neighbouring parish church. It took many days to totally dampen the fire and many more to dismantle the shell which the building had become. Now a year on, members of the Fakenham Fire Brigade will be marking the anniversary of the blaze – which occurred on May 25th – by taking part in a sponsored bike ride of some 400 miles over four days. I don’t know who was tasked with working out the route but the endeavour will be to visit all of the 42 fire stations in Norfolk. Funds raised from this considerable challenge will be in aid of the Fire Fighters charity which supports not only those who don the uniform but also their families. The men and women doing the pedalling set off from here on Friday May 22nd and return the following Monday. Prior to that, an open day will be hosted at the Norwich Road station on Sunday May 3rd. It goes without saying that all these selfless heroes deserve the full support of a grateful community. Many Thanks - Edna Plume Audrey Sharp meets …Becky Palmer, tennis coach and primary school teacher No one could describe Becky as a ‘fair weather’ person. Her job takes her out of doors in all weathers, and her character is one of determination and resilience. She trained as a primary school teacher, gaining a degree in Education and Music at Reading University. She taught at Brandon for two years until she decided she preferred helping children to learn outside the formal environment of the classroom. She has two big passions: tennis and music. She gained her tennis coaching qualifications and coaches children and adults at four clubs around north Norfolk. She has around 30 children learning tennis in Fakenham. She also runs tennis camps in the holidays and tournaments in local schools in the summer. Norfolk is a good place to learn tennis, with the courts at Cromer being among the best in the country. Becky would encourage anyone, young or old, either to take it up as a great exercise and sociable activity or to refresh their long forgotten skills. She loves music and plays the trombone in the Hunstanton Concert Band, and the Centre Stage Swing Band. She has played at important civic events, such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Sandringham and the High Sheriff’s service at King’s Lynn Minster. She was also elected to serve the Raynhams ward as their district councillor on North Norfolk District Council in 2011, a role which she has thoroughly enjoyed and found very satisfying. What is the most under-rated thing about Fakenham? – There’s a great range of activities available at all the sports’ centres and gyms, but it is a great pity that the college courts were grassed over. What is your favourite view in the area? – I love the view of the top of Blakeney High Street towards the quay. What particular talent would you like to have? - To fly an airplane. Do you have a gadget you couldn’t do without? – My ‘Pbone’. It’s a hi-tech plastic trombone which is designed to be played in cold weather. Or my I-limb. I was born with one hand so this is a prosthetic limb where the fingers move independently according to your muscle signals. Your pet hate? – Drivers who don’t indicate! Who has been a great influence in your life? – My mother. She has always been supportive, always encouraging me to achieve my goals and not admitting defeat. What’s the biggest decision you’ve made on the spur of the moment? - I don’t! I like to think about things. What is your greatest strength? – I am not easily defeated. I like to achieve. And your greatest weakness? – Chocolate! What’s the greatest challenge you’ve had to overcome? Although I was born without my right hand, I am naturally right-handed, so I have had to persevere and learn to be competent with my left hand when I was a child. My mother has been a great support and encouragement all along. How would your friends describe you? – Reliable, sarcastic and a joker. What do you no longer worry about? – What people think of my arm. Or angry? – People who don’t turn up for things without apology. Do you have advice that you’d like to pass on? – It’s not the money that you have that matters, it’s who you choose to be. Make the most of what you’ve got. How would you like to be remembered? – By the young people I coach, as someone whom they could ask for help and who was a positive influence in their lives. What do you wish you’d known when you were 18? – That adults aren’t always right (except me!) What is the secret of happiness? – To have a solid base of family and good friends. What’s the one thing you are really good at? – Playing the trombone. What do you do in your spare time? – Walking the dog, enjoying my iPad and being a reluctant gardener! What’s your bedtime reading? – Hide and Seek by Ian Rankin. Any particular ambitions? – I’d like to perform at the Royal Albert Hall or play at Wimbledon. If you were Prime Minister for the day? - I’d widen the curriculum as many subjects are getting squeezed out. I’d offer a more practical education. If you were stuck on Fakenham church tower, who would you like to have with you? – Simon Rattle or Darren Huckerby. I love Norwich City! Your favourite holiday destination? – Australia. I went earlier this year on a fantastic tour of Australia and New Zealand. Is there a person you admire? – My grandmother. She was a genuinely kind person who always told me to look for the best in people. Did you have an inspirational teacher? – Yes, my music teacher at school. She introduced me to the trombone and gave me a passion for music. What’s your ideal weekend? – A Norwich City match in the morning, a concert with the band on Saturday evening and tennis on Sunday. My normal weekend in fact! What lessons has life taught you? – That there is always a path to success. You just have to find it. What lessons has money taught you? – It can’t buy everything. I should save more. It burns a hole in my pocket and costs me a fortune in trousers! Francis Mason and his wife Gill will be moving in sometime in May with his Institution and Licensing at 6.30pm on Sunday 31 st May. Everyone from the Parish is invited to the service although it is likely to be standing room only! From that date onward Francis will be officially able to take services, both regular and the special ones such as Baptisms and Weddings, at Fakenham and Fulmodeston - also under his care. We ask that until that date Francis and Gill are given time to settle in quietly before they start work in June. We are looking forward to having a leader once again, and I’m sure the retired priests who have been taking the majority of the services during the Vacancy are looking forward to going back into retirement! The Churchwardens, Readers, PCC - and congregations – would like to thank them for all their hard work during the Interregnum. We were much saddened by the sudden death of Dennis Allcock, the Captain of our Bell Ringers and husband of Joyce who runs the church kitchen. I have been asked to include this message of thanks: “Joyce Allcock and Family would like to thank everyone for their kind words and prayers of support since the death of Dennis on March 18th. This has been a difficult time and the support of all our friends has been much appreciated. We would particularly like to record our appreciation for the generosity shown for the money collected towards the Fakenham Parish Church Bell Fund at the Thanksgiving Service.” Thank you to everyone who has tidied up the Burial of Ashes plots in St Peter’s Garden. The area now looks much better and so colourful with all the flowers laid over Easter. The remaining structures mainly crosses - which were standing above the ground have been removed and are in safe keeping at the Parish Office. Alison Harding FEATHERS FLY AS BADMINTON CLUB RELOCATES! We will, however, continue to play on Friday nights…..as soon as next week!” The Friday Night Club will now meet at the Fakenham Sports Centre, Field Lane, from 8 o’clock – and any new members, from 16 to 90, from beginner to expert would be most welcome to join us. Envelope collections are a vital source of income for the charity, accounting for some 75 per cent of the money it raises over this particular seven days. In 2014 this was an amazing £8m.* On May 14th, market day, there will be dedicated stalls in the parish church and a street collection around the town centre. Christian Aid Week is the single biggest act of Christian witness in Britain and Ireland. For thousands of churches like those in Fakenham, it’s a way of getting out into local communities and answering the call to help people in need. Jesus challenged his followers to love their neighbour – at Christian Aid it is believed that he meant our global neighbour as well which is why thousands of supporters dedicate themselves to helping the deprived in all corners of the world. We each bring what we have to the task – our energy, our voices, our influence, our money, our talents and our prayers. We can’t sit back and allow poverty to thrive. Your contribution, however modest, will undoubtedly help to make a difference. Thank you. * Please take your envelope with your donation to any of the churches or to the Heel Bar.
