There were over a hundred parishioners and members of various local Protestant Churches in attendance. The idea of the general concert germinated with the High School Honors CCD Program at St. John’s where James spent a quarter semester teaching Church Music. Some of the parishioners asked if they could attend the class but were restricted. Instead, the idea of a general concert came in to play. It was a delightful presentation on Medieval Music scores on religious music. James and choir were at their best. Many thanks go out to them for their great work and we hope they offer another concert next year. Please mark your calendars for the season of Lent. Confessions, every night of the week at 8:00pm. Soup Suppers are on Friday nights at 5:30 to 7:00pm. This will be followed by Stations of the Cross at 7:30pm. The annual Living Stations will take place in the church on Friday Night April 11th. The way things are going these days…it will probably snow. Hmmm? For those who like to think outside the box, please know the Fr. Herman J. Veger Council for the Knights of Columbus from the parish will celebrate their 50th anniversary in Warrenton Saturday, June 7th. The parish picnic will take place the very next day. Bring on the ponies and moon bounce. Not bad, not bad at all. Just when you thought it was safe to go out, Fr. Peter Odiambo announces he is leading a pilgrimage to the Holy Land later this year. The dates are October 27th to November 5th. I think Fr. Peter will make a very good travel guide. I highly recommend the trip. May those who join him have a very happy, healthy, and holy pilgrimage. And, please pray for those of us left behind. Last night I had the good fortune to join the boy’s basketball team for the end of the season Sports Banquet at Foster’s Grill. The kids received the “Good Sportsmanship” award from the league…for the fifth year in a row. They were quite a bunch, well trained, well organized, and motivated by their Coach Peter Cloutier. The team, well equipped with height and a couple of capable guards, were tremendous in how they played the game. They each gave a 110 percent in the games they played. Coach Cloutier gave a tremendous final pep talk to the kids. And not before one good father thanked him publically for giving his kid a chance. In short every kid on that team is a winner because the sacrifices of their good parents and zealous, if not always quiet coach. He told the kids the game of basketball has all the markings of life. There is teamwork, sacrifice, and discipline. And should they ever lose a game they gain a greater understanding how to treat others when they win…with respect. Thanks Coach, you, the kids, and parents are the best. In closing, many thanks for your help with the annual BLA collection. The Bishop’s Lenten Appeal offers many blessings to the folks most of us will neither see nor meet. I encourage one and all to help in the apostolic collections of the diocese that impact the academic, social, and spiritual dimensions of our life. Every little bit from one and all really helps. God bless and keep you. Let us pray for one another. Collegiate Answer: Alfred Thayer Mahan (September 27, 1840 – December 1, 1914) was a United States Navy flag officer, geostrategist, and historian, who has been called "the most important American strategist of the nineteenth century. "His concept of "sea power" was based on the idea that countries with greater naval power will have greater worldwide impact. Power is impacted by availability. What good is a Navy if it can’t get anywhere fast. Just as the Americans will never give up interest in the Panama Canal so the Russians will never give up Crimea as their bridge to the world. Collegiate Question: With the arrival of the Second World War, great anxiety arose in the Secret Service on how to protect the president with a car that could handle an attack during the war. What kind of car did they get and who did it once belong too? Good hunting. Father Gould www.sje1.org St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin ST.
