PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND WITH
FATHER PETER In celebration of the 50th
Anniversary of Holy Spirit Parish, Father Peter will lead a
pilgrimage in the Footsteps of Jesus to the Holy Land

Dear Folks,
Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord
Tis the week we call Holy and it marks the final steps to Calvary and the Tomb. In the beginning
of the week the readings at Mass spoke of the great thief of the apostles, Judas. He questioned
why Mary, in wiping the feet of Jesus could not have simply given him, Judas, the money… for
the poor. In the closing of the week on Friday we meet the greatest thief of all time. “Dismas,”
the thief who stole heaven. Quite appropriately the name “Dismas” means “Thief.” And more
appropriately the chapel at Sing Sing prison, in New York, is named after him. Jesus promise to Dismas…“This day you
will be with me in Paradise.” Not a bad end for the week.
But the weekend is only just beginning. In the forty hours following His death Jesus meets the souls of Sheol, waiting for
the Gates of Heaven to be opened. Even the Great St. Joseph was there and, in the words of the poem of Frank Sheed,
would have asked, “How is your Mother, Son?”
And on this Sunday morning the history of mankind is once again invaded with the Providence of God with quiet, ever so
quiet, Resurrection. The sun rose on a morning unlike any since. Heaven and earth welcomed a new beginning in the
story of salvation. God bless one and all who through the prayers and penance of Lent reached more humbly, like
Dismas, and more joyfully, like Peter, into the unfathomable depths of God’s love and mercy. Let us all pray for one
another.
Many thanks go out to the members of the choirs for their hours and hours of practice coming to Holy Week. Seems like
only yesterday the choir director, James Noakes, offered his wonderful concert of Catholic music to all of us. The choirs
have offered all of us a beautiful moment when prayers and hymns rival the angels… and not because their loft sits a little
higher than those of us in the pews below. Holy week is a time of many blessings for all of us.
Many thanks go out to those who cleaned and prepared the church for Easter. Many may not know it but the
Confirmation Class spent quite a bit of time cleaning and organizing the church for the big day. God bless the kids.
Sacristans, Servers, Ushers, Readers, and Special Ministers of Holy Communion have been most generous in their time
and preparations. God bless one and all on this day of Easter. Well done good and faithful servants.
God bless the many new members of the parish who entered the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Such a beautiful
time of year. Many thanks go out to Mrs. Sherin Murphy, DRE for the parish and Mrs. Donna May, her assistant in
guiding the program through the many months. Deacons Don Libera and J.D. Williams are also to be commended for their
part in teaching in the RCIA program. Well done.
Many thanks to Fr. Stefan Starzynski for speaking at all the Masses about the upcoming Divine Mercy Sunday. I have
enjoyed watching him grow as a teenager at St. Anne’s parish and as a diocesan priest.

ST. JOHN SCHOOL Our Lord has Risen,
Alleluia! Congratulations to the St. John School and
Parish "Destination Imagination" Teams (Grades 3 & 6)!
After finishing first in the Regional competition, both
teams advanced to the state competition. The 6th Grade teamcomposed of Jack Rolando (from the parish), Ronni Pitts, Bella
Simmons, John Paccassi, Kyle Dargis, and Eireann Maybach placed
second in the state of Virginia, earning them a trip to the Global
competition in Nashville TN fromMay 20-23! This involves teams from
the USA, Canada, and thirteen other countries. Thank you so much, Mr.
and Mrs. Brian Phillips for your veteran coaching. Many thanks to all the
parents and Mrs. Fine (who judged) for their time as well. It will be very
expensive for entry fees and room and board in Nashville. The team is
reaching out to the school and parish for financial support. This is a once
in a lifetime opportunity for these kids, so please financially support
them. They will represent St. John to the global community! Thank you

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE
