The Feldenkrais Institute’s Birthday Celebration
Happy Birthday!
10 Years
at the Feldenkrais Institute of New York
Ten years ago this month, a group of dreamers got
together and opened the Feldenkrais Institute of
New York. Its two co-founders, David Zemach-Bersin
and Marek Wyszynski, worked in close collaboration
with Sheryl Field and Maria Lanaras. They were
joined at different times by enthusiastic new
Feldenkrais practitioners who had trained in the
Feldenkrais Method® with David Zemach-Bersin: Andrew Gibbons, Anat Meiri,
Mark Hirschfield, Tamala Bakkensen and Connie Rotunda. As soon as the floors
were installed and the walls were in place, the Feldenkrais Institute of New
York opened its doors and began providing workshops, classes, individual
sessions, professional training programs, and advanced programs for
Feldenkrais practitioners.
Over the years, new staff members have come aboard and we have bid
farewell to others. In recent years, we have enjoyed working with Suzanne
Ausnit, Casey Boyle, Sarah Daskal, Emily Davis, Katherine Fan, Natalie Gaetani,
Janin Gunderman, Carrie Hawkins, Belinda He, Dayana Henwood, Anna
Johnson, Nancy Gayle Judson, Kate Kernochan, Jaime Kight, Joe Miller, Aimee
Plauche, Mitch Schaefer, Molly Schaffner, Zoe Schieber, Kirsten Schnittker,
Jordan Sheely, Anastasi Siotas, Joshua Wolk, Kathy Yates, Kasia Wyszynski,
and Kaethe Zemach-Bersin.
Wednesday, April 1 • 6:30-9:30 pm
We proudly celebrate our tenth anniversary on April 1. For the past decade,
it has been our pleasure to offer the benefits of the Feldenkrais Method in
New York City. As the potent relationship between brain and body is
gradually understood and acknowledged by science and medicine, the
Feldenkrais Method is gaining recognition as being a valuable resource,
relevant to people of all ages. We invite you help us to celebrate with a
free evening of Feldenkrais fun!
The evening will include an enjoyable Awareness Through Movement®
lesson led by Marek Wyszynski and David Zemach-Bersin. We will also
present a film of Dr. Feldenkrais in action, and raffle off some Feldenkrais
prizes. Cake and popcorn will be provided! We hope you can join us.
This event is free!
Embodied Freedom
in Art & Dance
Freeing your potential for spontaneity within form
with special guest teacher: Barbara Forbes
Friday, April 3 • 6:30-9:30 pm
“Years as a ballet dancer have taught me that the restrictions imposed by
form can actually enhance our spontaneity and freedom. Good dancers
demonstrate this, and I believe the “dance of life” requires it!” – Barbara Forbes
The creativity we long for is always there. The question is, how do we access it?
Moshe Feldenkrais constructed Awareness Through Movement lessons to help
us do exactly that. One of his strategies was to create contexts in which
awareness of constraints during gentle movement could lead us to discover
innate capabilities that we didn’t know we had.
Hidden in plain view, a treasure trove of yet undiscovered inner resources
becomes available when we do not resort to habit. By engaging our brain’s
neuroplasticity, the Feldenkrais Method enhances our awareness, creating new
options by rendering habitual patterns flexible. We can learn to meet new
situations freshly and intuitively — whether practicing an art form or simply
living our life. Come dance with us!
Improving
Your Vision
with Mark Hirschfield
Wednesday, April 8 • 6:30-9:30 pm
To focus, our eyes rely upon finely tuned muscular contractions. Precisely
coordinated muscular activity is required to help us see with clarity and
accuracy, and to enable our eyes to move in sync with one another.
But the tonus of our eye muscles is intimately connected to the muscular
tonus throughout our body. If our bodies underlying level of muscular
contraction is chronically high, a number of difficulties may occur including
headaches, and blurred or double vision.
Join us for a three-hour workshop with Mark Hirschfield, to explore
Feldenkrais exercises designed to calm your nervous system and improve
your ability to see more clearly in all situations. Regardless of your specific
visual issues, this workshop will help your eyes to focus individually and to
work together with less effort, improving not only your vision, but also your
overall sense of comfort and wellbeing.
“I benefited enormously. I’m just much straighter and forward focused,
and I’m headache free…“
Student Susan Horwich, after participating in a previous vision-related workshop
with Mark Hirschfield

Walking

Enjoy healthier

Feldenkrais Method
Finding balance in
an unbalanced world
with Ease
with Joshua Wolk
to
Reduce Stress
and Anxiety
with David Zemach-Bersin
Friday, April 17 • 6:30-9:30 pm
Saturday, April 25 • Noon to 5:00 pm
Our musculoskeletal structure evolved so that we could walk with ease,
efficiency, and pleasure, but we can lose touch with these qualities
through injury, pain and stress. This workshop will help you to integrate
the benefits of Feldenkrais into your daily walking so that it can become
an enjoyable activity again.
Stress is unavoidable. It is impossible to feel calm and relaxed all the time.
Ideally, after a stressful event, we regain our sense of balance and recover
fully- but this doesn’t always happen. Because our brain reacts to negative
experiences more profoundly than to positive ones, our nervous system can
get stuck in “flight or fight” mode, and we can develop lingering habits of
muscular tension. Before we know it, we are caught in a cycle in which
muscular tension creates anxiety, and anxiety creates muscular tension.
Fortunately, this pattern can be changed effectively with the
Feldenkrais Method.
When walking feels good, it is one of the healthiest things we can do. It
aids digestion, promotes good circulation, and moves every joint in our
body. But a sedentary lifestyle can make us progressively less mobile. In
this workshop, we will use walking to remind our brain and body how to
find pleasure in simple movement. We will discover that walking can be a
means of exploring and improving the way we feel, instead of a chore.
Joshua Wolk has been walking for over 40 years! As a fifth-degree black
belt in Aikido and as an experienced Feldenkrais Practitioner, he
understands the art and pleasure of efficient movement.

Join David Zemach-Bersin, one of the world’s most knowledgeable
Feldenkrais Teachers, and Co-Founder of the Feldenkrais Institute, to explore
Feldenkrais lessons to help you restore a sense of calm throughout your body
and nervous system. As unnecessary muscular effort is reduced, accumulated
stress will melt away. Your breathing will improve and you’ll regain a sense of
balance and equilibrium.

Pain-Free Knees
& Ankles
For flexibility, support and comfort
with Marek Wyszynski
Tuesday, April 28 • 6:30-9:30 pm
It is important to have
healthy, comfortable,
well-functioning
knees and ankles
because considerable
pressure or ‘force’ is
transmitted upwards
through them, every
moment we are
upright. When your
ankles and knees
are well organized in relationship to the rest of your body, pressure is
absorbed easily. But when your ankles and knees are poorly organized,
shearing forces can cause damage and inflammation, exacerbate
symptoms of arthritis and make you more vulnerable to orthopedic
problems including osteoarthritis, torn menisci, patellofemoral pain,
ligament strains, fallen arches and sprained ankles.
This valuable workshop with Feldenkrais Institute co-founder Marek
Wyszynski is designed to help you to restore the strength, flexibility and
dependability of your knees and ankles, and to help prevent damage
from occurring in the future.

Feldenkrais in Transit
Relief from the discomforts of traveling
with Nancy Gayle Judson
Thursday, April 30 • 6:30-9:30 pm
Are you physically challenged by travel? Many people experience aches and pains
during or after traveling in cars, trains, busses, and planes. It is stressful to sit in
a cramped space, unable to move for long periods of time, in seats which often
cause our spine to round and our head to hang forward. This can be a recipe for
back, neck, shoulder, and hip pain as well as headaches, and poor breathing.
Add a couple of heavy bags, and some of us are tempted to stay home!
This workshop with Nancy Judson will give you effective mini Feldenkrais
exercises to use to reduce tension and neck, shoulder and back pain while
traveling. They involve movements that are so small and subtle that other
travelers won’t even notice! Participants will receive a recording of the short
Feldenkrais lessons presented in this workshop to keep on their mobile devices
and use on the road as needed.
Member Tuition: $30 • Pre-Registration: $55 • Day of Event: $65
Have you ever had a
Functional Integration session?
The individualized “treatment” aspect of the
Feldenkrais Method has many benefits
Individual Feldenkrais sessions are therapeutic
opportunities in which your brain can improve the
comfort and function of your body. Gentle, safe and
empowering, each session is customized to meet
your individual needs, and works quickly to improve
your body’s neuromuscular and skeletal organization.
Clients remain fully clothed while a skilled practitioner
guides them in a quiet, relaxing sensory-motor learning experience.
After an individual Feldenkrais session, you may feel a wide range of
improvements including better balance, greater flexibility, wider range
of movement, better posture, more energy and a refreshed, positive
sense of wellbeing.
