and from our humble beginnings in a room
above a pub in Nottingham we have rapidly
expanded to become one of the biggest event
companies in the UK working within the

the uk’s ultimate alternative
shopping experience
The Alternative & Burlesque Fair was launched in
September 2011 and has since expanded from a single
event to a national chain of shopping fairs spanning seven
cities. It is the only touring shopping fair in the UK which
represents the whole spectrum of alternative culture.
Our current locations are Bristol, Birmingham, Derby,
Glasgow, Leicester, Manchester and Sheffield with up to
fifty stalls selling clothing, accessories, artwork and curios,
from Fetish to Alternative, Gothic to Steampunk and
Burlesque and Vintage to Rockabilly.
You also get to experience some of the finest alternative
entertainment from the very best headline performers in
the UK and Europe, as well as a chance to see specially
selected up and coming stars of tomorrow.
Admission is just £5 and there is no need to buy tickets in
advance, just pay on the door....See you there!

Fundraising takes place regularly at selected events for the
Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a charity who campaign
for awareness of hate crime, especially against those within
minority cultures.

Pin up america CORRESPONDANT JESSIKAH WALSH SPENDS A DAY WORKINg WITH THE HNH team
Dear Diary…I am sat backstage at Manchester’s Sound Control Night Club. “Natsumi, you are on in 10” says
Lorraine, the Production Manager. Dutch Burlesque and Twisted Cabaret performer Natsumi Scarlett loves, but
rarely performs here in the UK, but today, she has flown in from Holland especially for the Alternative and Burlesque
Fair. “Its a big deal” she tells me. “I enjoy performing here.”
Natsumi is an in-demand, award winning and acclaimed Burlesque dancer. And I am helping her make glitter for
her performance. “It’s not everyday, you can say you helped Natsumi Scarlett make glitter” says Event Manager
Jules “you are very lucky and in for a treat” he explains “actually Jess, it’s more accurate that I say that this will
actually blow your mind.” It’s refreshing to see the owner, creator and Manager of a high profile large scale event like
this, helping out on the ‘shop floor’ as opposed to sitting in the production office, dishing out wrist bands to hangers
on, quasi-listening to a walkie talkie. It’s clear, this is a very different event from the many festivals and large scale
productions I have attended this summer.
The ever glamorous Shazzie, partner in crime and Front of House Manager, greets the audience as they enter. “It’s
important to make them feel really welcome” she explains “this is the first impression they have and it has to be a
lasting one.” With repeat guests returning year after year, the event crew have built up a strong rapport with them,
many of them known by name and they take the time to talk to every single person that steps foot through the door.
“Welcome to the fair” she smiles. What she actually means is ‘welcome to the family.’
Heresy n Heelz was born from the creative minds of Jules and Shazzie Evans, who, as fans of Burlesque and
‘Alternative’ cultures, felt there was a need to provide a platform where Vintage, Goth, Fetish, Burlesque, Steampunk
and other alternative cultures could come together under one roof in a celebration and showcase of awesomeness.
Now in its 4th year, it travels the length and breadth of the UK, hosting hundreds of independent traders.
Shazzie walks me around the event to meet the team and to do a spot of window shopping at the many trader stalls
hosted there. “Over the 3 floors, we try to cater to as many alternative cultures as possible. Downstairs is fetish, the
middle floor is the vintage tea rooms and upstairs is the burlesque and vintage. Every venue is different and we
have to adapt to the spaces we have” she tells me as we peruse the latex fashions and mingle amongst the fabulously
glamorous ladies and gentlemen of Manchester who have made an enormous effort with their styling to be here today.
I find myself backstage rummaging through my bag looking for a spare pair of scissors. Natsumi is on in 10 minutes
and I feel obliged to ensure the stack of ribbon does not get the better of her. As she trims the ribbon into a thousand
tiny pieces, I sit beside her and begin to cut. “Natsumi, what ARE we doing?” I ask, “making glitter” she replies ‘why,
of course..’ I think to myself. Natsumi is making ribbon glitter because she doesn’t want to cause a hazard to her fellow
performers. I am aghast at her generosity of thought. “Glitter gets everywhere, you shower for a month and it still
comes off you. Most importantly, it is slippery for the other performers, so I make glitter this way” and with that our
heads lower and so commences the cutting of a thousand twinkly pieces.
The family vibe is inherent at Heresy n Heelz. From the door greeters to the international star on the stage. Everyone
I speak to has a generosity of spirit, genuinely wanting to help one another make the event the best it can be. This is
why it is successful. This is how it is able to grow. This is what makes it different and worlds apart from other events.
It has few competitors because it is in its own league.
The walkie talkie crackles subtly as Jules receives the message that the front door has been secured and the entire staff
are now in position in the wings of the stage “it’s important that our staff have the opportunity to watch our headliner”
he tells me. I look around and the eyes of an expectant H n H team are glowing in the dark.
5 minutes later, and the eyes around me are filled with tears. Production director Lorraine justifies her teary eyes
with the fact that she will now have to clear the stage of what seems to be a tonne of talcum powder. The reality is that
there is not a dry eye in the house because everyone has been moved by Natsumi’s performance. It’s clear that Jules
knows how to book a success. With 23 dates on the cards for 2014, Heresy n Heelz is going from strength to strength,
leading by example with its professionalism and exquisite business model but more importantly its personal touches.

Natsumi Scarlett
Amsterdam’s Natsumi Scarlett is arguably one of the very
best avant garde performers in mainland Europe today, who
has brought audiences to tears with her moving & powerful
performances. She has performed worldwide and is a skilled
aerialist and dancer of many disciplines having trained at
Holland’s Royal Ballet School. Her performances are
eclectic, breathtaking and often include her myriad of circus
skills & magic tracks.

Arguably one of the most iconic British Burlesque
performers of the last decade, and founder of Ministry
of Burlesque, “the doyenne of feline femininity”
is celebrated internationally for her invigorating
performance style - a fusion of physicality, dance and

British burlesque theatre Kittie lovingly awakens with
