JIU-JITSU IN THE UAE
The remarkable rise of Jiu-Jitsu in the UAE, in terms of quantum and quality, is credited to the UAE’s visionary
leadership and its keen interest and support lent to various sports, aiming to advance the country’s sports
scene and raising the UAE’s sport status in international forums.
The sport was first introduced to the UAE in 1995 by H. H. Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the spiritual
father of the sport in the UAE. He discovered Jiu-Jitsu whilst studying in the United States of America. With a
passion for martial arts, Sheikh Tahnoon is a Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt accredited athlete by Renzo Gracie.
Upon returning to the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Tahnoon immediately went about creating a combat center to
provide people with the opportunity to study and learn more about martial arts. It was named the Abu
Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC). As a follow-up, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown
Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also became interested in
the sport. In 2009, His Highness eloquently expressed his vision when he said: “Jiu-Jitsu… If I will invest it
in my son, I will invest it in my country”. His support and involvement garnered a significant impact on the
sport’s development in the UAE. His vision materialized when the UAE Jiu-Jitsu school program was created
and the first edition of this international tournament took place in the region; the 2009 Abu Dhabi World
Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship. The Championship effectively contributed to spreading the sport in
many countries around the world and the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation is proud to be hosting the 7th edition of
the Championship this year.

RULES & REGULATIONS
The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation would like to inform all athletes about how we will run the 2015 Abu Dhabi
World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship. The World Pro will follow the new rules of Jiu-Jitsu International
Federation and Jiu-Jitsu Asian Union. The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation points system is very familiar to all
players. When adults from different belt categories are playing together, the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation will
run the rules for the highest belt.
All the players should be ready with their kimonos (GIs) in the warm-up area as soon as the officials
announce your category. The only attire allowed in warm-up and fight area will be the kimono (GI).
Any disciplinary foul against the staff, referees, players and public shall be punishable under the UAE JiuJitsu Federation Committee. It is strictly prohibited to be in the venue without a shirt or t-shirt or be
wearing shirts or t-shirts with offensive words or gestures.
•
Players from the same club will be placed on the same side of the brackets;
•
Only two athletes from each team are allowed to compete in the open weight category;
•
In weight division categories, clubs may have a Team A and a Team B. If representatives of both
teams make it to the semi-final in different sides of the brackets, the position in the bracket
changes to put them against each other before the final;
•
If two athletes (team-mates) are suspected of fixing a fight, they will both be subject
to disqualification from the tournament.
* In suspected cases, the Central Referee must stop the fight and ask the supervision of the Referee
Coordinator. The fight will then continue with the Referee Coordinator reserving the right to disqualify both
competitors if referees consider it an arranged fight.
Listed below are the basic principles of this year’s Championship.
