Winter is finally over and we are moving on to the beautiful season of renewal, SPRING! I know what a busy time spring is with the yard work but I would encourage you to renew your soul through art and the creative process. Joyful Arts Studio is a unique and nurturing environment that offers something for everyone. Whether you are looking to explore your own creativity, discover something about yourself or create a one of a kind piece of art the opportunity will be available to you. Joyful Arts Studio is here to work with those who identify themselves as creative and artistic as well as those who feel they have no talent. We will guide you through the creative process and help you find joy in creativity! Do not be intimidated by ‘art studio’ - this is a warm welcoming and nurturing environment to learn and grow in creativity. What’s New at Joyful Arts Studio Grant Award Recipient Joyful Arts Studio has been awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts to provide a proven drawing course for residents with cognitive impairment. Susan Shaffer, the executive director at Joyful Arts has partnered with Menno Haven to provide the art therapy course at their Menno Village and Penn Hall campuses. The proven art therapy program Shaffer will be sharing at the Menno Haven campus’ is Simple Lines, research developed by Barbara Warfel. The lessons are intended to enhance cognitive abilities and provide the residents with meaningful art activities. The residents do not need to have any previous exposure to art lessons. The first Page 1 lesson will be to establish a baseline of the participants’ abilities, cognitive skills and mental status. The cumulative lessons build skill and confidence with each lesson. Kid’s Classes The children’s classes have been a huge success and are here to stay. We will also be holding summer art camps for kids too. Youth Summer Art Camps Joyful Arts Studio, a non-profit corporation, is committed to sharing the joy of art through education of students of all ages. Located in downtown Greencastle the Joyful Arts Studio will be offering six weeks of summer art and crafts camps in June and July. There will be two weeks of camp for each of the following age groups: o 5-8 years of age Arts & Crafts Camp o 9-12 years of age Arts & Crafts Camp o 13 and up Art Camp Camp will be held from 10 am – noon Monday through Friday. We are planning lots of art activities including, drawing, painting, jewelry making, creating paper beads, mosaic collages, mixed media collage, handmade book making, and much more. Each day we will create at least three projects. The art camp for the teenagers will concentrate on drawing, painting, bead design, and mixed media collage just to mention a few of the projects. Cornelia Brown, Quilting Artist Joins the Teaching Staff at Joyful Arts Cornelia began quilting in 1986 after many years of needle work and craft art. Quilting quickly became a passion. She has taken many classes across the United States studying the art of quilt making and the history of quilts. She has taught quilt making for a Maryland Guild and as an owner of her quilt studio, CJs Crazy Stitches. She is a member of the American Quilting Society, the International Machine Quilters Association, the American Quilt Study Group and the Professional Longarm Yellow book. She holds certificates from course she has taken from the Machine Quilters Exposition (Rhode Island), Machine Quilters Showcase (Kansas), and International Quilt Market (Houston). Cornelia also studied Machine Quilting with Donita Reeves of Montana, as well as other professional longarm quilters. Space Rental Do you want to host a party or just a quaint gathering of friends but don’t have space or want the hassle in your home? We have just the solution for you; our classroom is available for your use for a minimal fee. The room can be set up to meet your needs. Please contact me for more information. Page 2 Girlfriends Gatherings This is a fun and unique experience for a group of friends or clubs to enjoy. You book a date and time for your party and we work with you to decide what creative project you will make. We have three levels of packages ranging from a full blown party with custom invitations, a creative project, delicious desserts and a gift bag of goodies to a simple evening of a creative project provided by Joyful Arts and you provide the snacks and beverages. A full brochure on the Girlfriends Gatherings packages is available upon request. Skill Levels--Most classes are geared towards beginners, it will be indicated in the class description if more experience is needed. Supplies and tools—most classes will have all supplies and tools provided, it will be indicated in the class description if you need to bring supplies. All artists will provide written class instructions. Lunch at the Highline Restaurant is included in all full day classes. Your meal, water, and gratuity will be covered. Beverages and desserts will be on your own. Studio Policies and Procedures Class Registration- should be done as soon as you know you want to take the class. This allows the teaching staff time to prepare in advance with purchasing supplies and doing prep required for your class. You are welcome to pay 50% of your class fee to hold your seat. Class registration policy—registration will occur only after a deposit or the full class fee has been paid. The website is now set up to allow you to pay a 50% deposit on your class registration or the full amount. These same options are available at the studio too. Don’t forget, you will receive a gift if you register for classes while at the studio. Class cancellation will be determined one week prior to the date of the class so please don’t wait to register. Most classes have a minimum of 4 students. Cancellation policy---Joyful Arts Studio, Inc. will refund your deposit if we are responsible for the class cancellation and if you cancel prior to two weeks in advance of the class. Otherwise class deposits are non-refundable. Senior Discount—we will offer a 10% discount to all those 65 years and older. Please speak up so I don’t embarrass myself by asking your age. Students will work on their individual paintings and receive one-on-one guidance. This class is open to all levels, even if you’ve never held a brush. You will need your own supplies. You will receive guidance on color scheme, drawing, design composition and overall art theory. Class size is limited to 6. We will be painting on location this spring and summer as I introduce plein air painting to my students. Beaded Stretch Bracelet and Earrings for Beginners Artist: Susan Shaffer Tuition: $30 Skill Level: Beginner Age 14 and up April 8, Monday, 6-9 pm Students will choose from a large selection of resin, crystal, semi-precious gemstones, glass, wood, metal and ceramic beads to create a summer stretch bracelet and earrings. All tools and supplies will be provided for you. Each student will complete a bracelet and pair of earrings. Page 4 Creating a Talisman Artist: Susan Shaffer Tuition: $25 Skill Level: Beginner Age 14 and up April 14, Sunday, 1-5 pm A talisman is an object which purports to contain certain magical properties which protect the possessor from evil or harm, or provide good luck. The word talisman means "to consecrate." A talisman must be charged with magical powers by a creator; it is this act of consecration or "charging" that gives the talisman its alleged magical powers. This talisman can contain items from a loved one who has passed on, becoming a reservoir of memories of your loved one charged with the magical powers of prayer as you create it. If your talisman will be a gift to someone you will want to write a letter to your loved one explaining the symbology in the items you’ve selected for your talisman. I can provide ribbons, wire, beads and charms to be added to your talisman but you will need to provide the mementos. Whether they are buttons, keys, bullet casings, or coins, the choices are endless. Pinterest for Businesses Instructor: Laura Wallace Tuition: $15 April 22, Monday, 6:30-7:30 pm Pinterest: we all have good intentions when it comes to Pinterest. Four Patch Dance Quilt Artist: Cornelia Brown Tuition: $67 Skill level: Beginner/Intermediate May 11, Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm Come learn how to make a traditional 4 patch quilt. You will learn how to piece the quilt and set alternate blocks. We will discuss how to make seams match. The piecing of the quilt will be done by machine. You will add sashing and a border to your quilt. We will discuss quilting, finishing and binding the quilt. Your quilt will finish 42 x 42 inches. You will need to bring your own sewing machine. Each student buys materials and brings supplies. The material and supply list will be provided at time of registration. Cornelia will provide the pattern, instructions, and assistance in class, with tips and techniques. You will complete your quilt top in class. Lunch at the Highline is included in tuition. Page 6 Canvas and Corks Poppy Painting Class! Artist: Susan Shaffer Tuition: $30 Skill Level: Beginner and beyond Adults May 17, Friday, 6:30-9:30 pm Join me for a fun and relaxing evening painting this gorgeous orange poppy. This project was created for the nonpainters of the world. This is an acrylic painting. The canvas is 16 x 20 inches. The canvas is wrapped so no framing is necessary. The studio will provide the instruction, canvas, brushes and paints. You bring your favorite wine or beverage and we will have a fun and relaxing evening creating this lovely painting. Wine glasses and light refreshments will be provided by the studio. Glass Tile Necklace Artist: Kay Ackerman Tuition: $30.00 Skill Level: Beginner Ages 7 and up May 18th, Saturday, 10 am - noon Make a colorful pendant by gluing origami paper to glass tiles. The backing is finished off with velour paper and a bail and cord for hanging. Colorful tube rings will provide accents to frame your creation. Once you have learned this technique, you can use any image: photos, fabric, prints and other visuals to create a keepsake. All materials are provided to make one pendant and necklace with accents, bail, and clasp. Page 7 Tutti Frutti Necklace Artist: Kay Ackerman Tuition: $35.00 Skill Level: Beginner Ages 11 and up May 18, Saturday, 1-4 pm Make a colorful necklace using basic wire wrapping techniques and working with jump rings. Colorful rubber tubing and other components now available for jewelry making allow you to create a summery necklace that you can wear anyplace. All materials will be provided to make one necklace. Several color choices will be available. Facebook Marketing for your Business Instructor: Laura Wallace Tuition: $15 Skill level: All May 20, Monday, 6:30-7:30 Having an online presence is more crucial than ever before. We will cover strategies to be as efficient as possible with your time. Updating your status, sharing photos, and interacting with other facebook users are great ways to build an online "fan base." Skill level: Beginner Adults June 1 and 15, Saturday, 9 am – 4 pm This class will teach you how to create making both hard and soft book covers and demonstrate how to make four different styles of book text blocks. We will make a Pocket fold accordion book great to use for memorabilia! Students will be shown five different types of pop-up cuts to create a pop-up book. We will also create a Japanese Stab binding book a very old style of book binding, and a mini photo book with window cut out. All supplies and lunch at the Highline are included in tuition.
