The present XVII International Congress of ISAH is the second one held in the Slovak territory as the IV Congress of ISAH was held in 1982 in the High Tatras when Slovakia was part of the former Czechoslovak Republic. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Scientific Committee and ISAH Executive Board, I cordially welcome you in Košice European City of Culture in Slovakia. The International Society for Animal Hygiene (ISAH) The International Society for Animal Hygiene is an association of veterinarians, agricultural engineers, biologists and other Professional scientists, practitioners and students working in the field of animal hygiene, health and welfare, safety of food of animal origin, environmental protection in relation to animal production and related areas. ISAH can therefore be considered as a group of scientists and practitioners from universities, farming and industry contributing to efficient, sustainable animal farming with healthy animals, providing wholesome food in a sound environment. Veterinarians and non-veterinary academic scientists (animal science, agricultural economics, engineers, microbiologists, public health professionals, epidemiologists) and respective professionals in animal production and agriculture, who work and/or do research, teaching and education in the field of animal hygiene, can apply for a membership of ISAH, and are most welcome to attend ISAH congresses and conferences. ISAH has been identified as influential conferences worldwide for professionals in animal hygiene, health and welfare to discuss and develop the latest research. The beginnings of friendly contacts and scientific communication between animal hygienists of western and eastern European countries date back to the sixties. They were initiated most of all by the developing animal production and the intensification-oriented changes in animal husbandry and the associated health risk. The requirements on the exchange of information and scientific collaboration increased and culminated in the statutory meeting of the International Society for Animal Hygiene (ISAH) held in Budapest. By the establishment of the Society the founders wanted – to promote organized collaboration among animal hygienists and create forum for their regular meetings in a world, which then was politically distributed to accelerate the spreading of scientific information, to assist in the formation of uniform understanding of animal hygiene as one of the branches of veterinary science, to help to realize new scientific achievements for the benefit of animal production, to serve both the economic production of foods of animal origin and improvement of quality of the products. The motto of XVII Congress of ISAH is “Animal hygiene and welfare in livestock production – the first step to food hygiene” and the scientific program follows the scope of the ISAH and concentrates on the following subjects: Animal hygiene and food quality and safety; Animal health, welfare and behavior; Prevention of disease, biosecurity – Vaccination; Animal hygiene, preventive veterinary medicine and herd health; Zoonoses, emerging diseases, Precision Livestock Farming; Novel housing and husbandry system; Sustainability in livestock production; Environmental pollution, emissions, abatement; Feed, water and waste hygiene and management; Livestock in developing countries; Climate Change and livestock production. The Proceedings from the XVII ISAH 2015 Congress present papers of lectures from invited keynote speakers, oral and poster presentations held in 2 parallel sessions. The University of veterinary medicine and pharmacy in Košice The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice is the only institution in the Slovak Republic offering higher education in the veterinary field. It has been providing the veterinary education in English for 15 years. Nowadays the University offers two English study programmes: 6-year degree programme for secondary-school graduates and 4-year degree post-BSc. programme for bachelors in agricultural, veterinary or biological sciences, both leading to the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). EFSA – The European Food Safety Authority EFSA is an independent European agency funded by the EU budget that operates separately from the European Commission, European Parliament and EU Member States. EFSA is the keystone of European Union (EU) risk assessment regarding food and feed safety. In close collaboration with national authorities and in open consultation with its stakeholders, EFSA provides independent scientific advice and clear communication on existing and emerging risks. It is my privilege to thank all participants, contributors, chairpersons, organizational and technical assistants for their considerable efforts and inputs. We wish you all have a meaningful and pleasant XVII ISAH 2015 Congress and pleasant time during your stay in Košice, Slovakia. Ass. It houses the Altar of St. Elisabeth, a rare Gothic double spiral staircase, one of only five of its kind in Europe. Construction began around 1380. The frescos and sculpting inside and out are the works of Štefan, a local master craftsman from the 15th century. There’s also a sundial from 1477 and, in the crypt, the leader of the most significant anti-Habsburg uprising in the former Kingdom of Hungary, Francis II Rákóczi. Superb views of Košice spread out from the top of the accessible northern tower, 60 meters high. As you come out of the main doors, take a good look at the decorative riddle on the facade, part of what makes this cathedral unique in the world.
