The mouth, essential for oral nutrition, hydration and speech is also a potential route of infection. It
is important to maintain a high level of oral hygiene. Those who are unable to clean their teeth
independently including people who are fed partly or entirely by non-oral means, typically
percutaneous gastrostomy (PEG) require skilled assistance and this can entail dealing with
disturbances of sensation and movement that make it difficult or impossible for them to easily
tolerate touch to the face and mouth or voluntarily open the mouth.
This course is designed to promote knowledge and understanding of oral care in such clients and
equip participants with practical skills of assessment, treatment and management. The course will
teach practical techniques required in order to carry out effective everyday routines of oral hygiene.
This course is aimed at/intended for nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech and
language therapists, doctors and carers working with individuals who have neurological conditions.
Aims and Objectives:
The course aims to enable course members to identify symptoms, interpret their causes and
establish an appropriate oral hygiene regime for individuals, including those with complex needs.
The prevention of secondary disability is included.
To enable course members to understand the:




range of factors influencing oral movement and hygiene·
relationship between posture, movement, swallowing and airway protection·
risk assessment including of penetration and aspiration·
principles of therapeutic oral hygiene
and begin to acquire skills required to


carry out effective therapeutic oral hygiene treatment in dependent individuals
promote participation of clients in oral hygiene routine
Teaching and learning approach: the workshop format allows relevant anatomy and
neurophysiology to be presented in conjunction with its practical implication, illustrated by
videotape and live demonstration, supported by handouts. Basic skills are learned in self experience
workshop sessions.
Evaluation: course members are required to complete a self-evaluation questionnaire. This uses
rating scale to compare their knowledge, understanding and skills of the topic area before and after
the course day.
