The text speaks about Jesus being the slaves’ closest and most reliable friend who comes to gather his friends and take them to heaven, and also speaks of the faith in that as illustrated in this portion of the text: “You may have all this world. Give me Jesus.” The arrangement of the spiritual was done by Moses Hogan (1957-2003) who is an African-American composer who was well-known as an arranger of choral music.
