Cultural & Linguistic Competence: Core
Concepts and Individual Development
Being skilled in the provision of culturally and linguistically (CLC)
competent practices is a mandate for behavioral health
organizations today. This course introduces the core concepts,
processes, and rationale for CLC competence, and offers practical
approaches for building competency. Most importantly, it focuses
on individual learners to inspire them to be more self-aware of
personal cultural values, biases, and skills. The final course module
addresses specific assessments and methods for ongoing
professional development in this area.
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
• Detail the importance of cultural and linguistic competence for
organizations and professionals.
• Describe the differences between culture, race and ethnicity.
• Identify the building blocks to cultural and linguistic competence.
• Describe the complexities of personal identity.
• Discuss three barriers to cultural understanding.
• Enhance skills for improved intercultural communication.
• Define intercultural communication competence.
• Describe how to apply self-reflection skills for building
intercultural communication competence.
• Develop a plan for personal development strategies for cultural
competence.
