I don’t want the noise of between 8 and 82 planes over my house almost every day, like trucks going past my front door or a vacuum cleaner being turned on. I don’t want my conversations disrupted. I am concerned about how this number of planes and the noise impacts will grow as the airport does. I believe this is not about planes landing safely, it is getting more planes to Gold Coast Airport to improve its financial bottom line at the expense of me and another 60,000 people. I’d prefer (and so would tourists) the Airport spends money on what passengers really want – protection when embarking and disembarking from planes! Aircraft noise is a hazard, the effect on my health is a risk and my safety will be compromised if the proposed flight path goes ahead. I am concerned about my safety and that of other residents and tourists. Allowing planes to fly in extreme weather over the most densely populated parts of the Gold Coast puts me and my family at unnecessary risk. I want the planes kept out to sea. The ILS is not worth it because visitors may find it too noisy and not come back to the Gold Coast. With planes flying over our most populated residential/tourist areas, tourists and even local residents who visit our beaches or parks will find parts of the Gold Coast too noisy to relax. The potential gain from old ILS technology and its flight path is insignificant compared to how I will be disadvantaged. The Airport says ILS is needed to reduce diversions in bad weather for about 50 planes a year, but I believe it is fewer (around 12) since newer RNP technology was installed late 2014. So to stop 12-50 diversions out of 34,000 flights a year, 60,000 people will have planes over their roofs any day, any weather, year after year. That’s not fair. I understand Airservices says Gold Coast Airport is operating safely without an ILS, so this proposal is not about safety. I believe Gold Coast Airport is introducing ILS to cater for the low cost airlines that don’t have the latest planes or technology - to my disadvantage and that of 60,000 others. I am concerned about my property value declining. So while Gold Coast Airport makes money from increased landing fees, I may lose money. That’s not fair. I am a shift worker and am worried about noise impacts on my sleep. Continued interrupted sleep may be dangerous to my health. I question the public consultation process. It should be conducted by an independent government body and not by a private company which has a commercial interest in their own proposal. I have children who need 10-12 hours’ sleep, not only the 7 hours in the night curfew! The night curfew has too many exemptions which will allow cargo planes and other aircraft flying over my roof in the middle of the night. I am concerned for my children because aircraft noise has been linked to reduced cognitive development in children and learning outcomes in schools under flight paths. I have worked all of my life to build a home for my family and now I am told it is about to become a flight path. That’s so unfair. I suffer from severe Tinnitus and experience pain, and then consequently react aggressively, to aircraft noise. Around 1-2% of the population suffers the same problem.
