Medinat al Hajaj. In the first picture a plane is taking off. In the second picture it is flying
and in the third picture it is landing. Alia has come from England- perhaps Manchester
Airport. She has arrived at Jeddah Airport in Saudi Airport. She is there with her
grandfather and perhaps others in her family. They are going to go to Mecca for the
Hajj. She has just landed, and she says that another huge plane arrives every three
minutes. She asks the question: 'How do the planes all land and take off safely?'

airport. Each flight control centre controls a large area of air space. Flight controllers
guide each plane through their air space. Then they pass the plane to the next flight
control centrealong its route. Flight controllers keep all planes a safe distance apart.
When a plane is near its destination, it talks to approach control. Approach control may
put the plane in a stack flies in a circle above and below other planes. When the planes
at the bottom lands, all the other planes come down one level. Then the next plane
lands, and so on.

