Dear Parents and Carers,
This is a busy period for the children at school, many of whom are in
the middle of assessments and our year 6 have completed their
statutory tests (SATS). We are proud of all our children and their
attitude to hard work and look forward to seeing the results of their
efforts, both in school and at home! Thank you for your continued
support, particularly supporting your children with not only
homework but things such as being punctual to school,
remembering the correct equipment etc. Ask your child about their
on line homework - we are developing this system and there will be
lots of fun and interesting activities, from which they can learn at
home. Teachers can monitor their progress and send messages too!

SOME OF OUR RECENT NEWS AND EVENTS:
The ‘Treacle bear day’ on 17th April was a success. Children enjoyed their Treacle bear biscuits
and we raised £120 for Wakefield Hospice. Thank you for your support!
On 19th May our school football team represented Flushdyke within the EOCT year 5/6 tournament
held at Ossett Academy. The attitude of the boys was admirable, as they faced stiff opposition
(schools which have up to three times the number of pupils as we do!). Due to their consistent
efforts our team finished 3rd out of 5 teams , so well done boys and thank you to Mr Kenyon for all his
hard work coaching them, too !
Class three had a great time at Ledstone Country Park last Wednesday. They took part in lots of
outdoor activities and Mrs Barnett reported that they were all impeccably behaved. The children
(and adults!), gain so much from trips and it’s a pleasure to children out .We are looking forward to
the forthcoming Residential visits next term to Robin wood (in Tadcaster ) for Class 4 and Blencathra
(in Keswick), for Class 3.

Highlights of the half term! Some of our children volunteered to talk to Mrs Palk about their
learning this half term ….
James Hill (R) ‘ I enjoy writing sentences. I can concentrate and remember the words. I can keep
my letters on the line, use capital letters and full stops to and even write my letters the right way
round. My writing is brilliant!
Ella Hudson- Y2 ‘I’ve enjoyed doing my SATS , because it’s shown Mrs Kavanagh how much I’ve
learned. I love reading and writing!
Kate Jackson –Y4 ‘My favourite learning has been maths, where I’ve been adding three digits and
doing fractions.’
Jessica Bishop –Y4 ‘I really enjoyed the Ledstone trip. We did lots of activities like beeswax candles
and felt flowers. It was really good fun.’
Daisy Denton- Y 5 The space project has been very enjoyable. It’s encouraged me to do further
independent learning at home, too.
Sam Driver- Y6 ‘I really enjoyed doing the ‘Mars 1’ project because it was very creative and it
encourages us to work as a team whilst learning about all aspects of the solar system.
Today Community Police Support Officer Paul Dix visited school and held two separate sessions
for the children regarding online or mobile phone safety (E safety). This is an increasingly worrying
threat for our pupils and we felt it important to discuss with the children sensible ways in which
they can keep safe. At Flushdyke School we totally discourage children viewing unsuitable
material and also promote the importance of considering the feelings of others whilst texting or
posting items on social media sites. Please support us in this at home and encourage your
children to act sensibly and appropriate at all times.
Unfortunately we continue to witness parents and carers picking up and dropping off children at
our school in a most unsafe manner. I know most parents feel strongly about this (as they have
told me!), however please let’s all work together to discourage people from parking on zig zag
lines and in the cycle lanes, obstructing pavements and the crossing. Please use the bollards to
cross safely, (I witnessed myself recently several families just walking out into the centre of the
busy main road and expecting wagons and buses to stop for them. We care for our school
community and dread someone being hurt). Please park and cross sensibly!
