NEWS ADVISORY – MAY 17 – SAN DIEGO LINDBERGH FIELD
“SPIRIT OF SAN DIEGO” PILOT TAKES OFF MAY 17 FOR
RECORD-BREAKING ROUND-THE-WORLD FLIGHT
Local Pilot Represents the Best of San Diego with World-Smart Innovative New
Technologies Built Especially for His Plane “Spirit of San Diego”
SAN DIEGO, CA – On Sunday, May 17 at 10 am, San Diego business owner, author, and pilot Robert
DeLaurentis will take off from Landmark Aviation at Lindbergh Field in his state-of-the-art aircraft “Spirit of San
Diego” for a three-month 26-country record-breaking around-the-world adventure. The San Diego community is
invited and encouraged to attend this historical event with DeLaurentis and celebrate the Spirit of San Diego.
Flying at a speed faster than has ever been flown in a Piper Malibu Mirage, his plane, named “Spirit of San Diego,” is
equipped with the most innovative technology available today. Seven local San Diego businesses have designed
and/or installed a combination of new technologies custom built especially for DeLaurentis’ plane to produce more
horsepower and speed, reduce drag, climb faster and run more reliably than any other plane of its type. More than 40
sponsors have signed on for this historical trip including Landmark Aviation, MT Propeller, Clean Wings Aviation,
Garmin, and Lightspeed.
This unique global exploration envisioned by DeLaurentis recalls the first-ever solo, nonstop transatlantic flight by
aviator Charles Lindbergh out of San Diego International Airport in 1927 and leads general aviation into the 21st
Century. Using world-smart technology throughout his trip, he will be the first pilot in a Malibu Mirage to complete
solo crossings of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
DeLaurentis says, “I carry the hopes, dreams and Spirit of San Diego with me on this historic flight. This call to
adventure showcases San Diego, aviation technology, raises money for charitable causes, and shows the people of San
Diego and the world what is possible with training, good decision making and the right equipment. This plane
represents the very best that San Diego has to offer.”
The event will include brief remarks at 9:30 am by Robert DeLaurentis.
