Through this valuable work experience many have been offered part-time employment and have well deserved references that will support their future paths towards university, college, apprenticeships, or the workforce. No Names Building Bridges No Names, is a student group dedicated to promoting awareness around issues of gender and equity and is doing a fabulous job of creating an environment of inclusion. This year, not only have they in-serviced teachers but are participating in a national pilot project that will impact the community. The will also be working on putting together a parent event for spring. McKay Art Gallery Vibrates with Student Artwork Congratulations to our grade 12 Visual Arts and Photography students for another eclectic display of their talents It is always wonderful to walk into the McKay Art Gallery to experience the hardwork, dedication and artistic talents of our gr. 12 Visual Arts and Photography students. As in past, the pieces were eclectic and covered a wide range of media. While the space itself is not a large one, the intimacy of the gallery along with the vibrancy of our students’ work really impacts your senses as you walk through the gallery, chatting with the students who are clearly very proud that their work is on display in the local community. Many thanks to the Gr. 12 Visual Arts and Photography students for sharing their work with us. Ms. Ubelarte for co-ordinating, Ms. Zawadska for her work with the photography students and to the rest of the Arts Department, who all volunteered to take a shift curating the space so that parents, friends and passersby could visit the gallery and experience the outstanding work of our students. From the Principal’s Desk FMM—IB World School Sports-bites Whatsoever you do... The University of Waterloo Mathematics contest will be written by interested gr. 9-11 students on Tues. Feb. 24/15 and by gr. 12 students on April 15/15. Any student who is still interested in registering for the contest must see Mr. Brown by Thurs. Feb. 5/15. Guidance Info Sr Boys Basketball team has 16-1 record. Won the St. Brother Andre and Prestige Trophy and awards tournaments. Junior Girls Volleyball Tier 1 Team currently 3rd (4-2 record) in YRAA East Division. They are Francis Libermann Tournament Champions, and Father Michael McGivney Tournament Finalists. Course Selection / Registration for September 2015—During the next few weeks, Counsellors will be visiting all homerooms to discuss course selection and future planning in the first week of February. This piece by artist Timothy P. Schmalz, entitled “Whatsoever you do,” was blessed at our Advent Mass and installed permanently in the atrium. Inspired by the Gospel of Matthew 25:40, this sculpture is a visual representation of charity. We should see Christ in the poor and the hungry. We should see our acts of kindness to them as kindness to Him. This piece serves as a daily reminder and companion to the statue of Father Michael McGivney, who worked in the service of others. Counsellors will visit homerooms to collect the Course Selection sheet with the $100 Activity Fee. It is important students meet deadlines. Students are encouraged to make appointments to see their Counsellors to examine their post secondary options. Students will be receiving their Verification sheets in early April. At this time them will be able to make changes. University/College Applications: SAC ran another successful haunted house during Halloween. Over 300 students and staff participated in this spooky event. OTHER SPORTS-BITES: Oct. hosted girls and boys elementary volleyball tournament . Nov. intramural dodgeball and ball hockey very successful Feb. hosting elementary basketball for boys and girls. Feb. intramural volleyball continues Spirit wear continues to be successful with more apparel and orders coming up. Course Selection will be completed through career cruising. To ensure that students get their first choices, they must have their completed career cruising printout and $100.00 activity fee handed in during the week of February 23 – February 26th. Our University and College bound students have completed their applications to University and College with the assistance of the Grade 12 Counsellor. We will be facilitating the transition to postsecondary and assisting students with scholarship/bursary applications. Chaplaincy & SLAM Charities hosted another successful Thanksgiving Casserole Drive with close to 300 casseroles made to serve the poor and homeless who frequent the Good Shepherd Centre in downtown Toronto. Inclement Weather Notifications will be posted: The Global Ideas Institute (GII), an initiative of the Munk School of Global Affairs, was conceived to provide intensive research and learning opportunities for high school students. This year, the challenges focuses on Financial Inclusion in India. We have representatives from 3 teams (6 FMM students of 18 total participants in our school), attending monthly world class lectures and mentoring by business leaders and U of T professors. They are preparing for an in-school competition, with the winning team moving forward to the finals at the Munk School in April where they will compete against groups representing schools across the GTA. The Arts Department as Busy as Ever Arts Awareness Day is on Wednesday, February 18th. This day will provide an opportunity to have some fun and show your artistic talents whether you are studying the Arts or just want to celebrate your passion for Music, Dance, Visual Art or Drama. Our Music program will be quite busy in the second semester beginning April 16—17, 2015. with participating in the annual Ontario Tickets go on sale early spring. Band Association. The Visual Arts program continues its wonderful tradition of showcasing student work inside and out of the school. Please visit the 2nd floor display case to see a variety of current artwork. The Drama program is excited to once again host the annual Sears Ontario Drama Festival on Monday, March 2nd. This year, we welcome Maple High School and Middlefield High School for an evening of intense theatrical performance. The buzz of this year's musical 'Seussical' is growing as our collaborative project gets closer to completion. We are proud to work as an entire community to bring everyone together in celebration of the timeless works of Dr. Seuss. The McGivney International Circle students get together to celebrate the Christmas season and share an international cuisine second to none. IB Registrations continue. Jan. 2015—Grade 12 Extended Essays have been submitted Jan. 30-31/15—IB Leadership and Retreat Weekend for gr. 11-12 IB. Feb. 2015—Extended Essay preparation and workshops to begin for gr. 11 students. Feb. 12/15—Parent Information Evening for IB Students gr. 9—11 regarding Course Selection Feb. 12/15—IB Teacher Conference for teachers. April 1/15—Lead 2015 Seminars April 2015-GII Challenge, Munk School of Global Affairs May 2015– IB Exams for gr. 11-12 IB Mandarin program in development for September 2015. There are 94 students enrolled in SHSM: 51 students in Health and Wellness and 43 Students in Arts and Culture. Students have gotten their certification in Standard First Aid. There has been training for students at York University in the area of Nursing. Guest speakers: Dr. Garafalo (Chiropractor) and Kyle Romany (Paramedic). Two new SHSMs planned: Non-profit (for 2016) and Business (for 2017).
