lovely time of year but the hot days seem to linger on. It’s hard to

hope the Easter period was a happy and healthy time … or did
we all eat a few too many Easter Eggs?

and always popular theme day! All

atmosphere was evident with all the
toe-tapping and quite a few people
itching to get up and dance.

Robyn Fuhrmeister Visit
Robyn Fuhrmeister from St
George joined a large group of
people at the Lions Club on the
th
of 24 March for an evening of
“getting to know you” and sharing
her story with us. Robyn gave
thanks on behalf of the St
George farming community for
the support and donations during last year’s Farmers Relief
Appeal. Robyn told stories of how and where the donations were
distributed and it was very obvious she is tremendously proud to
live in the very special community of St George.
Kookaburra Cruise
Our trip along the river was a
lovely day out, albeit quite hot,
but we all survived to tell the
story. It’s always interesting to
learn about the landmarks and
homes along the Brisbane River.
One highlight was that many
were first-time travellers on the
bus to the city. Fortunately we didn’t lose anyone along the way
considering we had quite a large group. Our esteemed President
was a bit of a rookie guide but we all got there in the end. Well
done Dan!

A Simple Poppy
I am not a badge of honour,
I am not a racist smear,
I am not a fashion statement to be worn but
once a year.
I am not glorification of conflict or of war.
I am not a paper ornament, a token,
I am more.
I am a loving memory of a father or a son,
A permanent reminder of each and every one.
I’m paper or enamel,
I’m old or shining new,
I’m a way of saying thank you to every one of you.
I am a simple poppy,
A reminder to you all,
That faith and honour will stand where heroes fall.

Things you may not know about
National Seniors Member Pam Healy
1. I was born two weeks prior to the outbreak of WWll, the
youngest of three children. I was educated at Holy Cross
Convent Wooloowin and St Rita’s College, Clayfield. I worked
at the Taxation Department whilst doing night study at Stott’s
Business College until I attained 120wpm shorthand and
60wpm manual typing. I was then transferred to Canberra.
2. From the age of nine I was fascinated by a young boy from
Charleville who attended St Columban’s College, Clayfield.
He contracted polio in the 1952 epidemic and after being on
the dangerously ill list twice, lost the use of his left arm. We
married in 1959 and had four children. Life wasn’t always
perfect – but more about that in my book I’ve commenced
writing! My husband was an accountant and his work took us
to Mount Isa, Gladstone, Mackay and Wickham, Western
Australia. I worked on and off as a Legal Secretary during
these years.
3. Returning to Brisbane, I worked in Aged Care at Cedar Lodge
and studied anything that interested me including a Bachelor
of Nursing, Iridology and Medicinal Herbs, Therapeutic
Massage, Reiki. Most of my study followed the sudden death
of my husband in 1999.
4. As a child I was painfully shy, but in my adult years to
overcome my shyness, I joined Toastmasters and became
Forest Lake Toastmaster of the year for 2003. I love the arts
and music, enjoy creating decoupage, Faberge Eggs, making
and dressing porcelain dolls and play piano at a retirement
village.
Thank you Pam for an insight into your life – we’re looking
forward to reading your book!

Accept all invitations, even if it doesn’t seem like the kind of
event you’d enjoy. You never know who you’ll meet.
Appreciate that friendships are built over time. Don’t share
major confidences with a new friend. Pushing for intimacy
may drive people away.
Accept that we’re all different. Demanding that others share
your beliefs and behaviours could limit the variety of friends
you make.
Show that you are a trustworthy and positive friend. Use
optimistic and encouraging conversation and don’t gossip
about others.
Take any opportunity to socialise. Invite people to attend
activities you have organised instead of always waiting to be
asked.
Use your existing network of family and friends to meet new
people. Ask if you would be welcome to attend one of their
social events.
Focus your attention on other people and outside interests.
Worrying about yourself and how you are feeling prevents you
from connecting with others.
Watch others who seem to make friends easily. Adopt some
of the same techniques they use. Confidence comes with
practice, so give yourself and chance to rehearse.
Show you’re interested in others. Ask questions about their
lives and interests. It will keep the conversation flowing.
Nurture old and new friendships. Give people in your life the
time and attention they deserve.

Professional Standards of Financial Advisors
The federal government has released a consultation paper and is
calling for submissions on ways to lift the professional standards
of financial advisers. Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said
the Financial System Inquiry and an inquiry by the Parliamentary
Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services (PJC)
have both recommended reform in this area.
“These inquiries make clear that the current
regulatory arrangements are no longer sufficient
to ensure high-quality consumer outcomes and
to maintain public confidence in the industry,”
Frydenberg said.
“With the right model, improvements in the
qualifications, competence and ethics of the
financial advice industry will be a win-win,” he
said. make clear that the current regulatory arrangements are no
longer sufficient to ensure high-quality consumer outcomes and
to maintain public confidence in the industry,” Frydenberg said.
“It is now time to put in place an enduring framework that raises
the professional, ethical and education standards of advisers.”
The consultation paper is based on the recommendations of the
PJC which recommended a model in which government,
professional associations, industry and academia work in
partnership, Frydenberg said.
“Industry will benefit from improved consumer confidence and
from becoming a recognised profession.
“Consumers will benefit from increased transparency,
accountability and adviser competence. I encourage all
stakeholders to participate in this consultation process.”
National Seniors will be making its own submission on the
proposed reforms before the 7 May deadline.
Mm mmmm … ANZAC Bikkies!


¼ Cup plain flour, sifted
1 cup rolled oats
½ cup caster sugar
¾ cup desiccated
coconut
2 tablespoons golden
syrup or treacle
150g unsalted butter,
chopped
½ teaspoon bicarb soda
Method:
Step 1: Preheat oven to 170 degrees Celsius. Place the flour,
oats, sugar and coconut in a large bowl and stir to combine.
Step 2: In a small saucepan place the golden syrup and butter
and stir over low heat until the butter has fully melted. Mix the
bicarb soda with 1 ½ tablespoons of water and add to the golden
syrup mixture. It will bubble whilst you are stirring together, so
remove it from the heat.
Step 3: Pour into the dry ingredients and mix together until fully
combined. Roll tablespoonfuls of the mixture into balls and place
on baking trays lined with non-stick baking paper, pressing down
on the tops to flatten slightly.
Step 4: Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool
and enjoy on ANZAC Day or any day! Yummy!!
Are you interested in being part of a subcommittee in 2015?
Perhaps you could attend an occasional meeting or volunteering
at our meetings or a sausage sizzle. Any help would be much
appreciated.
Volunteering
Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. We vote in
elections periodically, but when we volunteer, we vote every day
about the community [club] we want to be in (Modified;

On that note, Ann George from Project Love & Care is seeking
volunteers to assist with packing and sorting children’s packs.
Please see Dan if you can spare some time to help this very
worthy cause.

President’s Message
Update of recent happenings. We were
very fortunate to spend time with Robyn
Fuhrmeister at the Lions Soccer Club

including her amazing work in the distribution of donations from
our community, is testimony to the dedication of this very special
lady to her home and fellow citizens of the Balonne Shire. In

March, Julie and I attended Sunnybank Branch 25 Anniversary
lunch and the new Springfield Branch first meeting. A request
from me to members – could you please keep your voices to a
whisper during meetings and especially when we have guest
speakers or entertainers as some of our members have minor
hearing difficulties and unfortunately miss out of what’s being said
or sung. Many thanks, Dan
