Gallagher’s Book Club meets the third Thursday
of the month at the Library in the Activities Centre.
All residents are welcome to join the exciting
monthly discussions of the selected books. On
Thursday, April 16th, the club members will discuss
“A Good Man” by author Guy Vanderhaeghe.
Wesley Case, a former soldier and the son of a Canadian lumber baron, sets out
into the untamed borderlands between Canada and the United States to escape a
dark secret from his past. He settles in Montana where he hopes to buy a cattle
ranch, and where he begins work as a liaison between the American and Canadian
militaries in an effort to contain the Native Americans' unresolved anger in the
wake of the Civil War. Amid the brutal violence that erupts between the Sioux
warriors and U.S. forces, Case's plan for a quiet ranch life is further compromised
by an unexpected dilemma: he falls in love with the beautiful, outspoken, and recently widowed Ada Tarr. It's a budding romance that soon inflames the jealousy
of Ada's quiet and deeply disturbed admirer, Michael Dunne. When the American
government unleashes its final assault on the Indians, Dunne commences his own
vicious plan for vengeance in one last feverish attempt to claim Ada as his own.
Vanderhaeghe expertly weaves a gritty account of the end of the Wild West with
an intimate tale of love, retribution, and rebirth. Beautifully imagined and deeply
moving, "A Good Man" is Vanderhaeghe's triumphant conclusion to his venerated
turn-of-the-century epic.

An Important SECURITY Reminder
Please be aware that there has been a recent forceful break-in
and theft from a home at Gallaghers, while the owners were
away on a winter vacation. Although this is not a common
occurrence, to prevent the probability of future break-ins and
thefts, we ask that all residents be vigilant and take the
necessary precautions.

April Hikes 2015
All hikes will leave from the Activities Centre at 9:00 a.m.
April 7. Rose Valley Reservoir Circuit
This trail includes cart tracks, sandy and rocky paths, beaches, and minor bushwhacks.
The area is scenic and quiet, although just over the first ridge from Kelowna. We will do a
circuit of the entire reservoir. It is a demanding climb to the lunch spot
Time: 4.5 hours. Grade: 5. Altitude Gain: 600 metres.
April 14. Black Knight West Ridge
After an ascending traverse over grass fields this route climbs steeply up the west ridge.
Initially it winds between open bushes and gravel patches but higher up the angle eases
through the forest. After traversing a few ravines you see the multitude of aerials decorating the summit. We will descend the service road until it reaches the open grassy hillside
and then follow one of the irrigation ditches diagonally back to the trailhead.
Time: 4 hours. Grade: 7. Altitude Gain: 670 metres.
April 21. Mission Creek Pipeline and Waterfalls (walk and hike)
This is a relatively flat hike along cart-paths and hiking trails. Walking from the Centre we
go around KLO creek on McCulloch Road to a pipeline trail above Mission creek and
descend to cross Hydraulic Creek. The trail becomes a cart-path to the rapids on Mission
creek. There are several good viewpoints as you climb up the narrow and steep path along
the edge of the creek. We pass a lower waterfall and up to the gorge of the upper falls. We
will return following the trail alongside Mission creek.
Time: 4.5 hours. Grade 4. Altitude Gain: 250 metres.
April 28. Okanagan Mountain Park – Goodes Basin and the Pinnacles
The Park trail description is moderate and although wet underfoot in places the windblow
has been cleared. From the gate on Lakeshore Road the trail gradually climbs to Dead
Horse Creek and a junction with Wild Horse Canyon trail. We climb up beside the creek
until a bridge leads to an hour's climb to Goodes Basin and extensive views.
We will return the same way.
Time: 6 hours. Grade: 4. Altitude Gain: 600 metres.
