1. The Fredericton Arts Alliance Artist in Residence Program 2015 Jul 6-19
A collaboration between musicians will take place this week in the Barracks. From July 6-19, musicians and artists Natalie Sappier and Nate
Miller are coming together to create music as Artists in Residence for the Fredericton Arts Alliance in the Soldiers’ Barracks.
Natalie Sappier specializes in Aboriginal symbolism and storytelling of the Wolastoq and Maliseet People of New Brunswick.
Nate Miller is a professional drummer, who has been involved in underground music scenes across Canada. He promotes and
leads spiritual drumming events and teaches hand drumming. In 2007 he founded his own production company, Emanate 7.
Miller will be recording the collaboration, and playing percussion. Sappier will be combining Aboriginal chanting with a dialog of sound and
voice. Working collaboratively will be a new experience for them, and they are encouraging feedback from visitors, as part of their
creative process.
The Artists in Residence program continues throughout the summer, with two artists sharing the space for a week at a time. While there,
they are prepared to demonstrate their work, their tools and techniques and talk about the things that inspire their creations. The studio
is open 10am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday and noon to 5pm on Sunday.
It’s the fourteenth year for the FAA program, which receives support from the city of Fredericton, Downtown Fredericton. For more

honoured earlier this year when a selection of their pieces was placed on permanent display at Canada House in London, England. In New

3. Bard in the Barracks presents Romeo and Juliet in Barracks Square and Hamlet in Odell Park Jun 19-Jul 5
Bard in the Barracks is celebrating its tenth year of outdoor Shakespeare productions in downtown Fredericton with a specially expanded
season featuring two of the Bard’s most famed tragedies, running from June 19 through July 5.
The company will return to its original home, bringing the Bard back to Barracks Square, to stage an exciting new production of Romeo
and Juliet. Set in the midst of a contemporary national election campaign, with the warring Capulets and Montagues as rival parties on
opposite sides of the ideological spectrum, Romeo and Juliet will offer more than a few knowing nods to politicians we all know and love
(or love to hate, as the case may be), along with thrilling street fights, live music, and a site-specific staging in one of Fredericton’s most
beautiful and historic locations.
Romeo and Juliet will run alongside Hamlet in Odell Park, a remounting of Bard’s 2014 production that was on its way to setting a new box
office record before post-tropical storm Arthur wiped out its final performances. Set in a camp of itinerant travelers, the Danes,
Hamlet draws inspiration from the vibrant music and culture of the travelling peoples of Europe, and won raves for its innovative splitstream staging, which sees audience members divided into two groups, each of which experiences a different version of the play as they
are led through the park over the course of the evening, even encountering some scenes that occur just “off-stage” of the pages of
Shakespeare’s work.
Romeo and Juliet in Barracks Square and Hamlet in Odell Park will be performed on alternating evenings from June 19 through July 5.
Single tickets range from $10-$18 with reduced prices for two-show passes and for groups.

4. Contemporary New Brunswick Photography in Focus at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Jun 25-Aug 30
Phantom Presence: Contemporary Photography in New Brunswick explores photography through a diversity of approaches, photographic
technologies, aesthetic viewpoints, and contemporary visions as represented by the work of photographic artists Jaret Belliveau, Amanda
Dawn Christie, Carol Collicutt, Kyle Cunjak, Oliver Flecknell, Rachael Leigh Flett, Julie Forgues, Frédéric Gayer, Paul Griffin, Peter Gross,
Mathieu Léger, Annie France Noël, Sophie Polanski and Vitaly Korneev, Evan Rensch, Neil Rough, Karen Ruet, Karen Stentaford, and
Christina Thomson. Aimed at chronicling and heightening the profile of recent creative developments in contemporary photography in the
province, it demonstrates photography as a disciplined way of seeing within an open field of possibilities for the exploration and
expression of ideas.
Phantom Presence: Contemporary Photography in New Brunswick joins an ongoing exhibition of photographic works by pioneering
photographer Harold Edgerton (1903-1990), whose work on high-speed and stroboscopic photography, helped advance photography in
both aesthetic and scientific aspects. The exhibition, Freezing Time, presents eleven of these photographs from the permanent collection.
Phantom Presence: Contemporary Photography in New Brunswick, is curated by Karen Ruet and Terry Graff, and is supported by the
Province of New Brunswick, the City of Fredericton, CI Institutional Asset Management (CI Investments), and the Scotiabank Artist
Residency Program. The exhibition runs June 25 through August 30. Harold "Doc" Edgerton (1903-1990): Freezing Time is curated by Virgil
Hammock, and is supported by the City of Fredericton and the Province of New Brunswick. It runs May 24 through August 30. Admission is

8. River Jam 2015 Jul 3
The music starts on the Dip patio at 4:30pm on July 3, 2015. That’s right! It’ll soon be River Jam time again, one of Fredericton’s favorite
music events of the summer! With 4 stages, each with a different vibe- we’ve got something for everyone’s musical taste. There’s an easy
listening, soaking up the sun on the patio stage, blues party atmosphere, an intimate club setting and a dance party. The night ends with a
rockin’ jam session in DJ Purdy’s, hosted by Paul Campbell.
River Jam will feature 21 bands, an amazing range of talent from Fredericton and along the Saint John River Valley, playing everything

9. What the Non-Humans Taught Us at Connexion ARC Jul 4
Join us in Connexion ARC's main space on Saturday, July 4 for a conversation with artists Marina Roy, D’Arcy Wilson, Janice WrightCheney, and curator Corinna Ghaznavi, discussing the complex relations between human and non-human animals as explored in their
respective practices. Contemporary art is a space where we can imagine what else is possible with great irreverence, while critically
examining the existing cultural structures that determine our (human) relationship to other animals and other forms of life.

10. Inter-Season odd sunday at Molly’s Coffee House featuring Shane Neilson Jul 5
Announcing an inter-season event for odd sundays, Fredericton’s longest-running, semi-monthly, perpetually-hyphenated, poetry-andmore, reading series. We will meet Sunday, July 5, at Molly’s Coffee House, located at 554 Queen Street, at 2pm, for featured
reader, Shane Neilson, visiting his (almost) home town from Oakville, Ontario, and reprising a canceled odd sundays session from last
winter. Neilson will be reading from his latest book of poetry, On Shaving Off His Face (2015) by Porqupine’s Quill.

Shane Neilson is a family physician who published his first trade book of poems, Meniscus, with Biblioasis in 2009. In addition to several
collections of poetry, Neilson has published in the genre of memoir, short fiction, biography and literary criticism, and his work has been
widely anthologized in poetry, nonfiction, and medical journals. In his medical doctor and writing practices, he focuses on mental illness,
pain, and disability. He currently acts as editor for Victoria, B.C. publisher Frog Hollow Press. Neilson lives in Oakville, Ontario; his work is
rural New Brunswick.

12. Battle of the Arts New Brunswick 2015 Auditions Jul 11
Battle of the Arts New Brunswick aims to provide continuous support for youth through all forms of art. We believe that the arts can
create positive change and helps to build communities. Every year BOTA discovers young talent with creative ideas within the province,
and creates a stage where they can be seen by hundreds of spectators, including friends and family, as they display their art.
During the grand finale we congratulate the top three winners with prizes, as a motivation for displaying excellence in the arts. In 2014,
BOTA past participants and guests came to the Fredericton Delta Hotel, where they performed and raised awareness for mental health
issues in the Maritimes through the arts. Please help us spread the good news, as BOTA aims to discover more talent this year. The 2015
Kick Off audition in Fredericton is July 11 at 5pm at the Charlotte Arts Centre. This year’s theme is “All Different, All Equal”

13. Fredericton Botanic Garden Association presents the Annual Treasured Garden Tour Jul 12
The Fredericton Botanic Garden Association is pleased to announce the return of its annual Treasured Garden Tour. Post-tropical storm
Arthur prevented the tour from going ahead last year but we are looking forward to its return this year. The tour will take place on Sunday
afternoon, July 12. This year five Southside gardens will be showcased each featuring their own on-site visual artist and musician.
The gardens are very different and range from two beautifully designed downtown gardens, to an estate garden located in the centre of
the Fredericton golf course (surrounded by fairways), and a wonderful garden in New Maryland that boasts a zen garden, water features
and streams, a forest garden and more.
Visitors will be able to delight in the full summer scents and beauty behind the garden gates while at the same time watching a painting
unfold followed by a tour and garden party at the Fredericton Botanic Garden. Guests should plan to spend a full afternoon appreciating
the loving touches each gardener uses to enhance their garden; then enjoy the remainder of the day sipping rhubarb punch and nibbling
sweet treats while Stephen Peacock performs on classical guitar.
We are also launching a new art auction of donated works created in the gardens alongside works donated by various local artists
including Kris Leblanc, Peggy Holt, Brigid Toole Grant, and Lynda Rae Burke. This annual event serves as a fundraiser for the Association as
well as providing a way to introduce new visitors to the Fredericton Botanic Garden. Past visitors of the Garden get to see what’s new and
how the Garden is continuing to expand.
Tickets for the Treasured Garden Tour are $16 and are now on sale at Scott’s Nursery and Botinicals Gift Shop or they can be purchased
from our online store at www.frederictonbotanicgarden.com. The Garden Tours run from noon to 3pm concluding with a Garden Party

15. Cineplex’s National Theatre Live presents Everyman Jul 16
BAFTA winner and Academy Award® nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) takes the title role in this dynamic new production of one
of English drama’s oldest plays, directed by the National Theatre’s new Director Rufus Norris (Broken, London Road).
Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a
last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out. One of the great
primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since

the 15 century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, and movement by
Javier De Frutos.
This production takes place on Thursday, July 16 at 8pm; there will be an encore performance on Saturday, September 19 at 12:55pm.

16. Beaverbrook Art Gallery to Launch The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation Art Critic Residency Program
Recognizing the importance of visual arts criticism and journalism in the development and appreciation of contemporary art, the
Beaverbrook Art Gallery is pleased to announce the launch of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation Art Critic Residency Program.
The Gallery’s first critic-in-residence is Edgar Allen Beem, an award-winning freelance journalist from Brunswick, Maine, who was art critic
for Maine Times and Portland Independent, and the recipient of the Manufacturers Hanover Art/World Award for Distinguished
Newspaper Art Criticism for his coverage of the 1987 auction sale of Vincent Van Gogh’s Irises. A former librarian at the Portland Public
Library, he has written for Yankee, Down East, Boston Globe Magazine, Photo District News, Westbrook (Maine) American, ArtNews, Art
New England, Antiques & Fine Art, Art & Antiques, Fiber Arts, American Crafts, and Federal Design Matters, among other publications.
Since 2003, his column “The Universal Notebook” has been a regular feature in The Forecaster, Falmouth, Maine, and from 2008 to 2013,
he wrote an art blog “Just Looking: A Critic’s Eye on New England Art” hosted by Yankee magazine. Beem is the author of Maine Art Now
(1990); Maine: The Spirit of America (2000); Hardlines: A History of the Emery-Waterhouse Company (2007); Backyard Maine: Local Essays
(2009); and Art in Maine: Contemporary Perspectives (2015). He states: “My credo as an arts writer has long been: ‘The work of art is the
search for meaning.’ I believe art is not only a form of personal expression but also a form of inquiry, every bit as much a quest for truth as
scientific research.”
Beem’s residency in New Brunswick will take place October 18 to 24, 2015 and will involve several studio visits with local artists, a public
lecture, and an art writing workshop. His observations of the work of New Brunswick artists will be published by the Gallery in 2016.

2. Exposure Summer Dance Camp
Exposure Summer Dance Camp will be taking place at the Currie Center on the UNB campus from Monday, July 13 to Friday, July 17. It is
designed for dancers 9 years and over who already have training in jazz, hip hop, tap, and contemporary genres. Each dancer will receive
training and learn choreography in the aforementioned genres. All choreography will be performed in a final showcase on Friday, July 17.
The full week will cost $250 and this includes the use of all facilities, including an hour of pool time Monday through Thursday, and all
supplies. Dancers are required to bring their own lunch and snacks, a water bottle, and dance/swim attire. The camp will run from
8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Thursday and 8:30am-12pm on Friday.
The final showcase is scheduled from 11-12pm on Friday in the Currie Center dance studio. For further information or to register visit our

3. The Calithumpians’ “Act Now!” Drama Camps 2015
The Calithumpians are pleased to announce that registration is now open for our 2015 “Act Now!” Drama Camps! A mainstay of
Fredericton for generations, the Calithumpians have been offering their unique brand of summer day camps for over twenty years. Every
week, the “Junior Calithumpians” get to learn what it takes to put on a Calithumpian-style show, by writing their very own play collectively
with our experienced instructors and participating in workshops conducted by the Calithumpians themselves!
Our Drama Camps offer children and adolescents a chance to experience theatre first hand through our tried and true method of creative
drama activities and participatory games. All week long the campers will be active - acting, singing and dancing - making “Act Now!” not
just a catchy title, but a promise. The participants get to enjoy a peek behind-the-scenes of the Calithumpians’ Theatre in the Park in
Officers' Square, and view the live lunchtime performances by the professional troupe.
Various members of the summer troupe provide specialized short workshops including singing, dancing, theatre games, and
improvisation. Each camp culminates in a short play written and performed by the camp participants that debuts Friday at noon in
Officer’s Square as a curtain raiser for the Calithumpians’ Theatre in the Park performance.

The NotaBle Acts Theatre Company will be holding open general auditions for plays to be performed in its upcoming fourteenth annual

2. Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts Now Accepting Applications
This scholarship, which honours the late artist, arts educator and activist Charlotte Glencross, aims to support developing practitioners in
the arts. The scholarship is open to all age categories and disciplines, where an artist or craftsperson seeks to build upon a new practice or
establish a new direction in their work.
The Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts is an award that is determined on a competitive basis, and
may be awarded to a candidate who:

Has demonstrated exceptional potential and talent as an artist

Intends to study arts at a recognized institution or with a recognized private instructor for the purpose of pursuing a career as a
professional artist of arts professional.
The Charlotte Glencross Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000. One prize each year may be awarded. All art forms are eligible. Only New
Brunswick residents are eligible to apply.

3. Call to Artists: Request for Qualifications for the High Water Marker Project
The City of Fredericton is seeking an Artist or Artist team to create a site specific public art sculpture which will serve as the City’s high
flood water marker. An Artist or Artist team will be selected to work in collaboration with the City on a design that is functional, attractive,
and appropriate for the site.
The high water marker will be located on the south side of the Saint John River along the trail. This is a significant and highly visible
location and the sculpture will be used to interpret and indicate historical and yearly flood water levels. This piece will become an
attraction during flood season as the community looks to this marker as an indicator of water levels for general interest. During the rest of
the year, the piece will serve as an interpretive piece to indicate historical high flood water levels in Fredericton. It will also serve as an
enhancement feature along the waterfront and trail system.
The High Water Marker competition is open to professional Artists and Artist design teams (architects, engineers, artists) living in New
Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. As this piece will be functional with unique technical and dynamic requirements, the
artist must be willing to participate in a collaborative process with the City resulting in the final design. Therefore, the artist must be
available for meetings with the steering committee in Fredericton.
Budget: $30,000 (inclusive of artist fees, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation and related travel) Travelling expenses required
for design meetings will be covered separately
Installation: Fall 2015 (preferred) or Spring/Summer 2016
Site Description: The high water marker will be located on the south side of the Saint John River between the river and the trail, on the
west side of the pedway crossing over Pointe-Sainte-Anne Boulevard. This is a significant and highly visible location which will be used to
interpret and indicate historical and yearly flood water levels. Trail elevation is 6m.

Artwork Design Parameters and Criteria: The artwork must adhere to the following design parameters:

Durable for year-round permanent installation. Must be resilient and able to withstand elements such as flooding or ice
bumping against it
Low-to-no maintenance
Interpretive and tell a story about history of flooding with denotations of past high water levels, and be able to show a
measurement of future current high water levels (i.e. should have notches to show real-time water levels during spring
flooding).
Show measures in ½ meter increments
The following significant levels to be noted: High flood water level: 6.5m; 1973: 8.61m; 2008: 8.36m
Updatable with an ability to add new notable levels as the years go by
In addition to enhancing the landscape, must be functional and technical
Well anchored
Vandal resistant, designed to discourage climbing
Great visual impact and presence with year-round appeal, and be recognizable from a car driving by on Pointe-Sainte-Anne
Boulevard
Visually clear, accessible and understandable
Compatible with the natural surroundings
Selection Process: The Artist or Artist Team will be selected based on elements of the Entry Requirements, past experience, body of work,
cost and demonstrated ability to collaborate with a design team. The Selection Committee will include City of Fredericton representation
as follows: Manager of Engineering, Director of Public Safety, Manager of Heritage and Urban Design, and an architect and member of the
City’s Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee. The Selection Committee is under no obligation to choose any finalists. All decisions of the
Selection Committee are final. The City of Fredericton reserves the rights to revoke the RFQ and/or the public art project.
RFQ Submission Requirements: Please do not bind, staple applications or use plastic cover sheets. Artists must submit the following in

maximum of 10 images. Submit Jpeg files, no larger than 72dpi either by email or on a USB memory stick. Include a numbered
list corresponding to the images and with details of title, date, locations, commissioning client, budget, medium, size and brief
description of work.
Expression of Interest submission may be forwarded to the City of Fredericton Purchasing Division via email to [email protected] and
this is the COF preferred method for submissions. This e-mail address is for bid submission and/or signed Addendums submission only.
Suppliers should receive an automatic reply confirming receipt of their submission. If the supplier does not receive the automatic reply,
the Purchasing Division should be contacted by phone at (506) 460-2040. Limit the submission email size to a maximum of 10MB or send
the bid in multiple pieces, files that are larger than 10MB will bounce back. The City shall not be liable for any loss or damage of any
nature whatsoever if an email submission is not received by the City prior to the designated time and date, due to malfunctioning
equipment, the inability to complete the transmission of a document, or for any other reason.

4. Fredericton Pride Committee seeks Craft Vendors for Pride Week Festival
The Fredericton Pride Committee will be having a Pride Week Festival on Sunday, August 9, 2015 in Officer’s Square. We are currently
looking for craft vendors to set up around the square during the festival and we would love to have you!
Pride Week and the events leading up to it are very important to our community. Pride week is the one time of the year when sexual
minority groups find visibility in the larger Fredericton community. It is a chance to raise awareness and celebrate our diversity.
The fee will be $25 and vendors will have to provide their own tables/shelters. The Pride Festival will run on Sunday August 9 from 12-5pm
with the parade starting at 1pm. Vendors will be able to set up from 9am-12pm. The fee can be paid with cash or by a cheque made out to
Fredericton Pride. The fees will be collected on August 9 during the Pride Festival.

5. Council of the Arts Fredericton Performing Arts Scholarship
Students planning to pursue studies in a recognized program in the performing arts are invited to apply for the Council of the Arts
Fredericton Performing Arts Scholarship. The annual award is valued at $5,000. It is intended for residents of the greater Fredericton
area. The course of study can take place at any location and involve performance or production. Students at secondary, post-secondary
and graduate levels are eligible.
Information and application guidelines are available through the Fredericton Community Foundation at www.fredfdn.ca.
Applications must be received on or before August 31, 2015.
The recipient will be determined by a three-member selection committee. Past receipients include trombonist, Aaron Good; actor,
Samantha Kamras; and musician, Jeremy Van Slyke.
From 1978 until 2006, Council of the Arts Fredericton presented quality performances to Fredericton audiences through its ONSTAGE and
KIDSTAGE programs and encouraged young people in their study of the performing arts through awards and scholarships. The Performing
Arts Scholarship was created in 2007 with funds from the Council that are managed through a designated fund agreement with the

6. Call for Artists for Mental Health Services’ Recovery Art Show
Addiction and Mental Health Services Fredericton, part of the Horizon Health Network, is pleased to issue a Call to Artists to participate in
the third annual Recovery Art Show, an exhibition highlighting recovery from substance abuse, addiction, and mental illness. Creativity and
artistic expression can play an important role in recovery; the purpose of this exhibit is to show art depicting people’s experience of
recovery, increase public awareness, spark discussion, teach, and change perceptions.
The show will be exhibited at the Fredericton Public Library, November 2-27, 2015, with a reception at the Library on November 18, 2015,
at 6pm to celebrate the artists and Addiction Awareness Week. The show will feature the work of artists who live or work within the
greater Capital region. Works in all media, of any size and completed in any year will be considered.
Artists may submit up to 3 images of their work by email, CD or memory stick, with each image labelled with the artist’s name and title of
the work. An artwork that consists of separate parts, for example, a collage of photos will be considered as one submission. Artists can
also submit a 50-100 word statement describing the meaning of each submission to enhance the audience’s understanding of it. Electronic
copies of the artist’s statements should also accompany mailed images (in your language of choice). Please note that, depending on the
number of submissions received, not all pieces may be chosen for display.
