1. FAA Launches Second Artists in the Schools Series
The Fredericton Arts Alliance is sponsoring a new series of Art in the Schools projects. The FAA will pay artists $500 to work with a school
classroom for about 25 hours on a project to be coordinated with a classroom teacher. Priority will go to projects that involve the students
directly and that produce something of lasting value for the school, the class, or the students.
In the first series, which ran last spring, students created murals in three schools, a book of photography in a fourth, individual original
paintings in a fifth, and worked on a film/digital media project in a sixth. Artists can work in any media – a musician working with
children’s words to create a song, creating a dance to dramatize a history lesson, a visual artist working with a class to illustrate class
stories and create a book. The FAA will also cover all material costs involved in the creation, upon submission of receipts.
The program is administered through the Anglophone West School District, and its Fine Arts Coordinator, Andrea Penney. Application
forms and detailed criteria are available from her at [email protected]. The FAA encourages teachers in the area to make
proposals as well as artists to come up with ideas. We will work with teachers and artists to pair up proposals to make exciting things
happen. The guidelines are flexible enough to permit a wide range of suggestions to come forward.
The deadline for applications is November 28.

2. Maritime Shino: New work by Lee Horus Clark at Gallery 78
Interesting and beautiful surprises always emerge from Lee Horus Clark's wood-fire kilns. His process creates a magical array of natural
ash on his organic forms. For 15 years, Lee has experimented with indigenous materials for his shino glazes. Maritime Shino is his first
exhibition where the shino glaze is derived solely from minerals and elements collected right here in the Maritimes. These works were
fired in an Anagama kiln that Lee designed and built himself at his home in rural New Brunswick.
The exhibition will continue until November 16, 2014 along with My Favourite Things featuring paintings and drawings by Jessie Babin,
Ann Balch, Joanne Hunt, Susan Paterson, and Cathy Ross

4. The FHS Music Department presents their Fall Concerts Nov 6
The FHS music department is presenting their Fall Concerts on November 6, 2014 at 7:30pm in the Tom Morrison Theatre. The concert will
feature the String Ensemble under the direction of Ms. Alison Milne, the FHS Jazz Band under the direction of Craig Woodcock, and the
FHS Concert Band under the direction of Mr. Don Bossé. The concert band will be performing a moving piece in tribute to all who have
served our country in uniform, in particular those who have lost their lives in recent months.

5. Wayne Curtis’ Sleigh Tracks in New Snow Launches at Westminster Books Nov 6
Wayne Curtis’ new book, Sleigh Tracks in New Snow will be launched at Westminster Books on King Street Fredericton on Thursday,
November 6 at 7pm; just one day after Mr. Curtis will receive the Order of New Brunswick.
There will be a short reading by the author and a signing. Refreshments will be served. Sleigh Tracks in New Snow (Maritime Christmas
Stories) is a collection of stories written by Curtis over the past forty-odd years. This is Wayne Curtis’ 15th book. Back to top.
6. National Theatre Live presents Of Mice and Men at Cineplex Nov 6
Golden Globe winner and Academy Award nominee James Franco (127 Hours, Milk) and Tony Award nominee Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids,
Girls) star in the hit Broadway production Of Mice and Men, filmed on stage by National Theatre Live. This landmark revival of Nobel Prize
winner John Steinbeck's play is a powerful portrait of the American spirit and a heartbreaking testament to the bonds of friendship.
Of Mice and Men is directed by Tony Award, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circles award winner Anna D. Shapiro (Broadway’s August:
Osage County) and features Leighton Meester (Country Strong, Gossip Girl) and Tony Award winner Jim Norton (The Seafarer). The
production was nominated for two Tony Awards, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Chris O'Dowd.

7. Connexion ARC presents the Cold Cuts Video Festival Nov 6-20
The presence of digital media and the online world is now ubiquitous. Its relevance is unquestioned. Its scope is poignant and inescapable
– and we must revel in it! From November 6-20, Connexion ARC will host the Cold Cuts Video Festival on tour from Dawson City, Yukon.
Curated by Nicole Rayburn, this year’s theme, Revel in It!, explores the world of pop culture and mass media, through the work of artists
who are enveloped by it, who wallow in it, and who from within its spectrum, reflect on the possibilities of social reconfiguration and the
plurality of identity, offering both a critique of contemporary culture and a shameless and simultaneous embrace.
Exhibiting artists include: Ryan Trecartin; Pipilotti Rist; Kent Monkman; Stephen Andrews & John Greyson; Istvan Kantor; Kelly Richardson;
Jeremy Bailey; and Lisa Birke. Videos will be on exhibit at Connexion ARC, and at various locations in the downtown (see

8. Carl Parker and Penelope Stevens Open Solo Exhibitions at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Nov 7
Two new solo exhibitions open at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on Friday, November 7, 2014. Something Recognizable, an exhibition of
stylized acrylic paintings by Carl Parker opens in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery, while #myhiphegemony, an exhibition of linocut prints by
Penelope Stevens opens in the Penny Gallery. Both openings happen concurrently from 5:30-7pm.
Quispamsis-based artist, Carl Parker, has shown his paintings across Canada, most recently in Calgary, Alberta, as well as internationally,
at the La Biennale d'Arte Contemporanea di Firenze (Florence Biennale, 2011).Something Recognizable, a collection of acrylic paintings on
canvas, is Parker's second solo exhibition in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery. Parker paints abstract, landscape and figure paintings with
rich, impressionistic texture and a vivid colour palette - sometimes with a touch of whimsy in the subject matter.
#myhiphegemony serves as an exploration of the young female, transforming through the lens of her iPhone, into a feminist. Fredericton
artist and musician, Penelope Stevens explains, "I don't know when feminism became cool; when our culture, through social media and
popular marketing, grabbed hold of feminism in a hegemonic distortion of its true values. The free spirits of the world, hairy armpits in full
view, are suddenly raised to fashionista status, while subverting the underlying principles of equality and justice. Is it sexy to be feminist?"
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre welcomes the public to join us for the opening reception of Something Recognizable: Stylized Paintings by

9. NB Media Co-op, Connexion ARC, and Canada World Youth present El Jones Nov 8
El Jones is the Halifax poet laureate and an award-winning spoken word artist. This event takes place on Saturday, November 8, at 8pm at
connexion ARC. El Jones will perform her award-winning spoken word poetry.

El has performed all over Canada, including at the 10 Anniversary All-Star edition of When Sisters Speak in Toronto. In 2012, she was
sponsored by Citizenship and Heritage Canada on a reading tour of Nova Scotia with George Elliott Clarke. Her poetry is particularly
committed to political causes and social justice and has worked extensively with organizations around Halifax performing and presenting
on issues of social change. She is dedicated to using poetry in prison outreach and youth engagement. El is current artistic director of
Word Iz Bond Spoken Word Artist Collective. She teaches in the African Canadian Transition Program at NSCC and in the Women's Studies
program at Acadia.
Local poets Stepha Zapata and Ben Dugdale will also perform and we will be treated to traditional dance and treats from Ghana by Canada
World Youth participants currently working with different community groups in Fredericton. El Jones' trip to Fredericton is made possible

The George Steeves Fun-Raiser is taking place on November 8, 2014, at the James Joyce Pub in the Crowne Plaza, Queen Street,
Fredericton from 4:30 to 9pm. George is a well-known Fredericton area musician / fiddler who grew up in the Moncton area and learned
to play from Ivan Hicks and other well-known East-Coast fiddlers.
Come support George and be entertained with the great music of Doug and Lava Forbes, Darrell Grant, Jim Blewett, Ivan and Vivian Hicks,

12. TNB’s Honours 100 Anniversary of WWI with Somme Letters Home Nov 9

Theatre New Brunswick Honours the 100 anniversary of WW1 with a production of Somme Letters Home, from the letters of Private John
Bapst Cronin, on November 9 at The TNB Studio. Adapted by Caleb Marshall.
This intimate, two-actor play, starring Fredericton’s Alex Donovan and Sharisse LeBrun, is based on actual correspondence between one
New Brunswick soldier serving in France, and his family at home in Saint John. Somme Letters Home is drawn directly from the forty-five

letters Pte. John Bapst Cronin wrote to his mother, brother, and his sister Molly in Saint John while he served with The 49 Western
Battalion during the Great War these letters are artifacts, preserving a personal, military and Canadian history that we must never
forget. Such a thorough first hand depiction of the soldiers experience is rivaled only by some of the Great War novels of the period.

In his follow-up to The Guard, writer and director John Michael McDonagh returns with a superbly written, darkly funny and powerfully
moving mystery set in a sleepy coastal village in County Sligo, Ireland. Anchored by a magnificent central performance from McDonagh’s
Guard star Brendan Gleeson (The Grand Seduction), Calvary focuses on local parish priest Father James (Gleeson), who, after receiving a
death threat from one of his parishioners during confession, spends what he believes to be the last week of his life pondering whether
he’s made any difference at all to his community.
Though Father James apparently knows the identity of his would-be murderer, he is more concerned about the struggling souls around
him than of his own fate, and calmly goes about his weekly rounds in this quiet village where all is not as it seems. One by one, the
assorted villagers (and potential suspects) are given a chance to tell their variously unhappy stories: a smug local tycoon (Dylan Moran,
Good Vibrations), the cuckolded butcher (Chris O’Dowd, The Sapphires), his promiscuous wife (Orla O’Rourke), her surly lover (Isaach De
Bankolé, The Limits of Control), a disillusioned cop (Gary Lydon, War Horse), and a cynical doctor (Aidan Gillen, HBO’s Game of Thrones).

At the same time, Father James is visited by his troubled daughter Fiona (Kelly Reilly, Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster), the result of his tragic
marriage in the years before he joined the priesthood. In each encounter, the benevolent priest patiently argues for the value of the
Church—and of faith in general—in a modern society increasingly skeptical of this seemingly archaic institution.

John Turturro (Margot at the Wedding, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) has played a number of strange parts in his acclaimed career, but in
his new film as writer, director and star, he tackles his most unlikely role yet: a man who decides to enter the gigolo game more than a
little late in life, with the aid of an equally novice pimp played by none other than Woody Allen. Accept this brilliantly absurd premise and
you’re in for a hilarious ride.
Fioravante (Turturro) is a florist whose friend Murray (Allen) is facing insolvency with the imminent closure of his small bookshop.
Searching for a way to save the business, the friends hit upon the idea that, in a New York full of wealthy older women with active libidos,
surely a greying Don Juan could make a few bucks. And so, adopting the names “Virgil Howard” and “Dan Bongo,” the duo embarks upon
the world’s oldest profession.
Turturro sets up this crazy idea in quick, bold strokes, then goes on to explore just what it would mean to be a man-for-hire well past his
prime. His brilliantly leftfield comic sensibility is given even greater punch by a marvellous supporting cast, including Sharon Stone (Bobby)
and Sofia Vergara (television’s Modern Family) as eager clients, and Vanessa Paradis (Café de Flore) as a lonely and sheltered orthodox
Jewish widow whose tentative romance with Fioravante plays out under the watchful eye of Dovi (Liev Schreiber, The Reluctant
Fundamentalist), a vigilant member of the neighbourhood’s Jewish police.
In the midst of Allen’s remarkable resurgence behind the camera, it’s a thrill to watch him work onscreen with someone else’s material.
His wit and distinctive comic rhythms are in fine form here, and Turturro knows how to use the legend to best effect. With Fading Gigolo,
Allen adds yet another indelible role to his catalogue of New York stories.

14. Two Women Artists Exhibit Diverse Contemporary Views at the UNB Art Centre Nov 14
Join us on November 14 at 5pm at the UNB Art Centre in Memorial Hall for the opening of two special exhibits - Unstilled Egos: Selected
Works by Chantal Khoury, and Dozay’s Glooscap/Kluscap Series.
Chantal Khoury’s artistic practice focuses on figurative studies that probe the female identity, awkward beauty, and lost glamour. Her
compositions are inspired by images found in newspapers and magazines and often feature a “lonely protagonist.” Working in oil paint,
Ms. Khoury’s paintings are simplified and abstracted, featuring a Fauvist palette with intense colour contrasts and loose brushwork.
The paintings presented in the exhibition Unstilled Egos: Selected Works by Chantal Khoury are striking studies in contemporary
expressionism. Originally from Fredericton, now based in Montreal, Chantal Khoury received her BFA from Concordia University.
Dozay’s Glooscap/Kluscap Series, was born of a desire to bring attention to the distinct aboriginal culture of the Wabanaki tribes of North
America. Illustrating the story of Glooscap, the legendary founder and guide of the Wabanaki people, the exhibit features episodes in the
life of Glooscap and traces his adventures along the Wolastoq. Each painting is accompanied by text panels containing stories, poems and
historical notes describing the landmarks in each of the paintings.

These airbrushed acrylic paintings have the appearance of dreams, or recollections, referencing the stories the Wabanaki people have
always known but which were never written down. Each painting features a unique border design based on ancient petroglyphs, birch
bark baskets, clothing and wampum. Dozay was born and raised on the banks of the Saint John and Tobique Rivers. She attended the Nova
Scotia College of Art and Design.
This exhibit is presented in conjunction with the University of New Brunswick’s Mi’kmaq-Maliseet Institute’s Circle of
Understanding program designed to promote Mi’kmaq-Maliseet culture and history within the community. As part of this program
please join us on December 3, 2014 for the Circle of Understanding Program, Celebration of Wolastoqey and Mi’kmaq Culture.
Unstilled Egos: Selected Works by Chantal Khoury and Dozay’s Glooscap/Kluscap Series will be on view at the UNB Art Centre’s East and

15. Nasty Shadows Theatre Company presents Rougher Magic: A Cubist Shakespeare by Robert Moore Nov 14
Is there anything older than the story of civilized folk trapped on a desert island? This particular telling of the age-old tale centres around a
loving yet strangely indifferent father whose powers are failing him, his fantastically nasty dogsbody of a spirit helper, his estranged
daughter and her several alter-egos, and last and (too often) least, a colonized son/brother (the island's only indigenous inhabitant) who
has yet to figure out the rules governing the master race's notions of "civil conversation."
Sound familiar? Rougher Magic: A Cubist Shakespeare is written through, as much as around, Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Using one of
the Bard’s final plays as the source for a stunningly original story, Rougher Magic is a funny and moving deconstruction of the various ways
in which The Tempest (that extended meditation on the inevitability of death) constructs race and gender.
Robert Moore’s Rougher Magic, directed by fellow Shadow co-founder, Scott Shannon, and performed by a tribe of veteran ‘Nasties,’
offers an unforgettable theatrical adventure for cast and audience alike.

The 506: Creative Placemaking in New Brunswick is a dynamic, diverse and innovative forum that brings together stakeholders and
thought leaders who want to explore “creative placemaking”, an evolving concept that is being adopted by communities around the world
to intentionally leverage the power of arts and culture to make them stronger, and more successful. Hosted by ArtsLink NB, the forum is a
key opportunity to learn, network, debate and discuss “creative placemaking” in the New Brunswick context, to explore how we might
better engage art, culture and creativity as catalysts for community vibrancy, sustainability, prosperity and inclusiveness.

Addictions and Mental Health Services Fredericton is pleased to announce its second annual Recovery Art Show. This exhibit highlights
substance abuse, addiction, recovery, and the role of creativity in recovery. The exhibit will be on display at the Fredericton Public Library,
located at 12 Carleton Street, from November 1-27, 2014, and can be viewed during library hours.
The public is invited to attend the Recovery Art Gala which will be held in the library on November 19, 2014, at 6pm in celebration of the

24. The Andrews Initiative Presents: Nora Young Seeing the Forest and the Trees Nov 20

Along with an overview of the typical components of grant applications, this workshop will focus on developing a project concept and
writing about it clearly and concisely. The session will focus on Canada Council for the Arts and artsnb. Learn how to write about yourself
and your art practice in a way that supports your proposal and discover what jurors look for when reviewing submissions. Participants are
asked to bring their partially-completed grant applications for feedback.

John Murchie is a visual artist and curator living and working in Sackville, NB. The former coordinator of Struts Gallery & Faucet Media
Arts Centre, he has served on numerous provincial and national juries.
All workshops are free to ArtsLink NB members, who are welcome to participate in as many of the workshops as they would like.
Non-member fees are $25 for half day sessions, and $50 for full day workshops.
Space is limited and registration is required. A $20 deposit is taken at registration to secure your spot, and will be reimbursed at the
workshop. Registration includes refreshments for half day sessions and lunch for full day sessions. Participants are responsible for their
own transportation and accommodation.

3. Noteworthy Development through Music: Community Music Therapy for Children
Kimberly Arsenault, an accredited music therapist, will be running a series of 6 music therapy sessions for young children between the
ages of 3-7. As an accredited music therapist, she will use specifically learned techniques and music in order stimulate positive growth and
development in areas such as cognitive, physical, and social skills - all through the power (and fun) of music.
The sessions will take place on Saturday afternoons between November 1 and December 6. There are 3 possible time slots available:

3-3:45pm
There will be a maximum number of 6 children per group. Sessions will take place at Haven for Hope, located at 347 Main Street,
Fredericton. The price is $150.00 per child ($25.00 per session).

1. New Brunswick Artisans Nouveau-Brunswick at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show (ACTS)
Are you an emerging craftsperson interested in wholesaling your work?
In partnership with the Government of New Brunswick, the NB Crafts Council will showcase emerging craftspeople at the New Brunswick
Artisans Nouveau-Brunswick booth at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show (ACTS), February 7-9, 2015 in Halifax, N.S. Space is limited.
Applications are due November 7.
This is a low-cost, low-risk opportunity for craftspeople who are new to the wholesale market and who have never before exhibited at
ACTS to sell their wares to a diverse audience outside of the province in a competitive trade environment. The NBCC is planning to
revitalize our booth this year and present a dynamic set of artisans. Participants receive a wholesale readiness workshop, Ready, Set, Go,
which will be presented by the Atlantic Craft Alliance.

2. Shannex Parkland Fredericton Accepting Submission for Christmas Art Gallery Exhibition
Shannex Parkland Fredericton Retirement Living Complex, located at 35 Patience Lane, is having its second exhibition of artwork in time
for Christmas. The first exhibition was a great success with over 200 in attendance at the opening. The art gallery space is located in
the beautiful pedways that connect the buildings. The show will provide an opportunity for artists to display and sell their artwork in time
for the Christmas season. We are inviting local artists to display their work. All mediums are welcome.
Artwork will be accepted until 3pm, Friday, November 21.
We are requesting that the artist’s name, the title of the work, the dimensions, the medium, the price a short biography of the artist, and
ideally a JPEG of the work or works be provided via email. Shannex is also inviting the public to the opening and to visit the gallery to view
the artworks.

3. Call for Proposals: Charlotte Glencross Gallery
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre is seeking proposals for the Charlotte Glencross Gallery, for our regular exhibition programming. The
Charlotte Street Arts Centre “opens the doors of creative expression to all”, and invites professional artists, emerging artists, indigenous
artists, multicultural artists, and students to apply.
Submission deadline for full proposals is Monday, December 1, 2014 by 4pm EST.
Applicants will be considered for exhibitions beginning mid-May 2015 through to 2016. Artists must submit proposals by
email to [email protected] with the subject heading: Glencross Gallery Submission - Regular Programming.
Only two-dimensional works can be shown in the Charlotte Glencross Gallery (no sculptural works, please).

4. New Brunswick Youth Choir Now Accepting Auditions
The New Brunswick Youth Choir is a four-day choral residency for singers between the ages of 16 and 24 which will take place at the
Université de Moncton from May 7-10, 2015 under the direction of Scott Leithead. NBYC is an excellent opportunity for serious young
singers to work with a nationally-recognized choral conductor and to connect with like-minded students from around the province who
share a passion for singing.
Auditions for the NBYC are now open. All auditions will be recorded and the file emailed to the New Brunswick Choral Federation office.
The audition will consist of a song sung a cappella which demonstrates the singer's range, technique and vocal quality as well as a vocal
exercise which is assigned by the NBCF. In addition to the recording, the candidate will include a letter of recommendation by a singing
teacher or choir director and a general information form which is supplied by the NBCF.
Deadline for submitting the audition recording and supporting materials is January 15, 2015.
