1. FAA Launches Second Artists in the Schools Series
The Fredericton Arts Alliance is sponsoring a new series of Art in the Schools projects. The FAA will pay artists $500 to work with a school
classroom for about 25 hours on a project to be coordinated with a classroom teacher. Priority will go to projects that involve the students
directly and that produce something of lasting value for the school, the class, or the students.
In the first series, which ran last spring, students created murals in three schools, a book of photography in a fourth, individual original
paintings in a fifth, and worked on a film/digital media project in a sixth. Artists can work in any media – a musician working with
children’s words to create a song, creating a dance to dramatize a history lesson, a visual artist working with a class to illustrate class
stories and create a book. The FAA will also cover all material costs involved in the creation, upon submission of receipts.
The program is administered through the Anglophone West School District, and its Fine Arts Coordinator, Andrea Penney. Application
forms and detailed criteria are available from her at [email protected]. The FAA encourages teachers in the area to make
proposals as well as artists to come up with ideas. We will work with teachers and artists to pair up proposals to make exciting things
happen. The guidelines are flexible enough to permit a wide range of suggestions to come forward.
The deadline for applications is November 28.

2. NBCFI Survey for New Brunswick Cultural Facilities
Are you a NB cultural facility? Are you listed on the NB Cultural Facilities Inventory (NBCFI) website?
Participate online at http://nbculturefacilitysurveysondageinstallationsculturellesnb.gnb.ca/
This is a comprehensive, centralized inventory of cultural facilities was recognized as a priority for New Brunswick during the recent
Cultural Policy renewal process. This is being addressed through the NB Cultural Facilities Inventory (NBCFI) to:



Help maximize the use of existing cultural facilities
Support integrative planning at provincial and municipal levels of government
Better identify and measure investments for future long-term benefits
All cultural facilities, including community facilities with spaces currently being used for cultural purposes (for example: churches, local
service organization facilities, community centres, etc.) are encouraged to submit their information. The survey is available until Monday,

3. Theatre St. Thomas presents William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew Nov 19-22
In a world where daughters and sons are exchanged for family fortunes, Shakespeare’s sharp comedy The Taming of the Shrew finds
Lucentio concocting a plot with Tranio to win the love of “the fair Bianca” over rivals Hortensio and Gremio. But when the gallant
Petruchio comes to town “to wive it wealthily” he meets his match, Kate, the eldest daughter of the money-hungry Baptista Minola in the
Bard’s play about true love and “gold’s effect.”
“It’s been many years since The Taming of the Shrew played in Fredericton, owing at least in part to its provocative plot” says the play’s
director and TST Faculty Advisor Robin C. Whittaker, who has also written an epilogue to frame the play. “But this is one of Shakespeare’s
best comedies, the one in which he allows his audiences to believe what they wish: Do we conclude, like the drunkard Sly, that the play
teaches us how a ‘shrew’ may be ‘tamed’? Or is the play about learning mutual empowerment and calling into question the lengths of
parental authority?”

4. Artists and Writers Unite for Significant Digits Project
Emerge and the BlackTop MotorCycle Gang are back again with a powerful collaboration coming up at Old Government House in
November. Emerge, the artists group, and the BlackTop MotorCycle Gang have teamed up to explore the theme of significant digits; well
beyond the meaning of the term. In this, the second collaboration between the two groups, the artists have created a variety of pieces in
mediums including painting, fibre art, drawings, photography, and more on the theme of significant digits. The writers, after viewing the
works, have written one page pieces ranging from stories and poems to memoirs and introspective pieces inspired by the artwork.
The culmination of this project will be exhibited at Old Government House, located at 51 Woodstock Road, on Thursday, November 20
with a reception running from 5 – 7pm. After the November 20 launch, the exhibit will run until January 30, 2014.

“Having the The BlackTop Moto Cycle Gang and The Emerge Artists Collective come together once again and collaborate on this show,
Significant Digits, is a wish come true for me,” said Wendy Forrest, President of Emerge Artists Collective, “The last time we collaborated,
the Re-Myth exhibit, was very memorable and a success for both the artists and writers. This time we have reversed the rolls,” said Ms.
Forrest, “and will have the perspective of how the writers see the artists’ work portrayed through their stories, poems and vignettes, and I
am excited to see and hear the audience's and the newly appointed Lieutenant Govenor, Jocelyn Roy-Vienneau's, response and thoughts

5. Two Art and Architecture Exhibitions Opening at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Nov 20
Two important art and architecture exhibitions are opening at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery on November 20; one of them curated by John
Leroux. The public is cordially invited to attend the opening reception at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at
5pm.
Two creative forces are highlighted in these new exhibitions: artist, Bruno Bobak and architect, Ron Thom. Colleagues at the Vancouver
School of Art and strong friends thereafter, both transcended a single-genre focus and branched out into many other media, from painting
to printmaking to pottery to design. Both were driving forces in Vancouver’s cultural movement of the 1940s and 1950s, concerned with
the organic and the natural in response to the industrial direction of the post-war world.
An official Canadian War Artist, Bobak (1923-2012) would become one of Canada's most respected artists and would have a profound
influence on the cultural realm of New Brunswick, with his beautiful paintings and drawings that embodied modern Canadian art in the
region. Ron Thom (1923-1986) is widely regarded as one of Canada's greatest architects, having designed Massey College at the University
of Toronto, Trent University, and a number of sublime west-coast houses in the 1950s and 1960s.

7. The Rewards of Curiosity Colloquium at UNB’s Department of English Nov 21
The November talk in the Department of English 2014-15 Colloquium series will be given by Professor Emeritus Robert Cockburn, and will
be entitled The Rewards of Curiosity: Editing Distant Summers: P.G. Downes’ Journals of Travels in Northern Canada, 1936-1947. This talk
will have to do with Professor Cockburn’s interest in far northern travel and its literature, concentrating on how he discovered the Downes
journals, carried out research stimulated by them, and eventually saw them into print. He will read passages from the diaries, and extracts
from correspondence with men who had known Downes or traveled with him.
The talk will be given in Room 5, Tilley Hall, at UNB on Friday, November 21, at 3:30pm. Admission is free and all are welcome. For more

The Next Folding Theatre Company is preparing to unleash its own unique brand of theatricality on the city of Fredericton once again!
Now in its sixth year, the Creative Collaboration has become a trademark of the NFTC. A story is told from the perspective of six different
local storytellers through songs, swordplay and special effects. Each writer's world of the collaboration is completely unique.

drama, an opera, and a game of cards, all interwoven with vignettes exploring the Chinese New Year. This eclectic mix illuminates the
unique backgrounds and styles of its creators. Celebratory, satiric, and often uncomfortable, 10! 9! 8! etc., etc. is an explosion of silence,
cheers, and unaccountable shifts in tone. After all, what are time and space anyway?

The 60-voice-strong STU Singers present their Christmas concert, A Canadian At Home Christmas, on Monday, November 24, 7pm, in the

connection. Special guest is STU President Dawn Russell, who will be reading selections of Canadian poetry. The Singers are directed by Dr.

Screened to critical acclaim at Sundance, Berlin and Tribeca, the poignant sixth feature by celebrated writer-director Ira Sachs (Keep the
Lights On, Married Life) is a captivating modern-day love story about a couple whose decades-long relationship is upset by a drastic and
unexpected change in their lives.
Painter Ben (John Lithgow, Dreamgirls, Kinsey) and Catholic school choir director George (Alfred Molina, The Tempest, An Education) have
been partners for nearly four decades. On the heels of the new US same-sex marriage laws, the couple finally takes their vows in front of
their closest friends and family. However, when news of their nuptials reaches the school administrators, George is let go from the
teaching post he’s held for years. Without George’s steady income to help them cope with the high cost of living in Manhattan, the pair
has to uproot their lives and impose themselves on the busy households of their loved ones.
Performances are key in intimate dramas such as this, and Lithgow and Molina are note-perfect in their roles, effortlessly suggesting Ben
and George’s long history together in every casual action and interaction, while Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler,
Crazy, Stupid, Love) leads an outstanding supporting cast with a delicate, lived-in performance. Ultimately, however, the film is Sachs’
triumph: a thoughtful, heartbreaking, and beautifully realized ode to love, family, and both the struggles and rewards of age.

An official selection of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, the utterly charming Land Ho! follows the bawdily comedic escapades of aged exbrothers-in-law Colin (Paul Eenhoorn, This is Martin Bonner) and Mitch (relative newcomer Earl Lynn Nelson) as they set off across
Iceland’s first-class cities, grand coastlines and hauntingly primordial countryside with the intent of “getting their grooves back.”
Disenchanted with life after a forced retirement, former oculoplastic surgeon Mitch shows up on the recently divorced Colin’s doorstep
with two tickets for an all-expenses-paid trip to the Land of the Midnight Sun. Mitch has planned a busy itinerary—luxury hotels, indulgent
spas, picturesque hiking, renowned restaurants and trendy nightclubs—all in the interests of helping him and his long-time pal escape the

Michael Crummey is an accomplished author who grew up in Wabush, Labrador. He has published several books of poetry, fiction, and
non-fiction, including Hard Light, River Thieves, and Galore. His most recent novel, Sweetland, was shortlisted for the 2014 Governor
General’s Literary Award; it tells the story of Moses Sweetland—a resident of a small island off the coast of Newfoundland that shares
his family name—who fakes his own death in order to avoid forced resettlement by the Newfoundland government. Sweetland is
described in the National Post as having a “focus on a contemporary story, imbuing it with the force and weight of history and myth.”

17. Centre JMC-Fredericton presents Donizetti's Don Pasquale at Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne Nov 26
As part of Jeunesses Musicales Canada's Emerging Artist Concerts series, Centre JMC-Fredericton is proud to present the full version of
Donizetti's opera, Don Pasquale, presently on tour in eastern Canada, at the Centre communautaire Sainte-Anne Theater on Wednesday,

18. Theatre UNB presents Live Broadcast by John William Shiffbauer Nov 26-29
In John William Shiffbauer's Live Broadcast, Tom Power, young Hollywood heartthrob, is bored with the spoon-fed lines his producers
write for him. When his old friend, Jack Tatum, calls him offering him the opportunity to share his right-wing views on Jack’s live political
talk show, Tom jumps at the opportunity. However, his no-nonsense and straight-shooting agent, Jane Forbes, is not as enthusiastic.
When he is joined on the show by left-wing congresswoman Madeline Bruce, Tom and Madeline face off in a heated debate.
"Live Broadcast brings hot-button issues to the stage," says Kayla-Renée Ossachuk, director of the play. "The play is set in the States;
however, with recent events and elections, the topics discussed in Live Broadcast are relatable to Canada and New Brunswick."
Live Broadcast is a politically charged drama that questions everything there is about Hollywood, politics, and gender.
It will run from November 26-29, 2014 at 8pm at Memorial Hall, UNB, Fredericton. Tickets are $8 for students, $10 for seniors and

21. Celtic Christmas Show: Sounds of the Season Nov 29
Wilmot United Church will come alive with songs, instrumentals, and dance in a Celtic Christmas show entitled Sounds of the Season. The
evening will feature Carolyn Holyoke (piano, accordion), Katherine Moller (fiddle, cello) and Tom Richards (vocals, guitar) along with
special guests Susan Kennific (vocals), Sarah Clarke-Rowinski (dance), Saint John native Marilyn Inch (tin whistle), Oromocto teen band
Sona and Ron Buck (narrator). Spirited melodies, haunting arrangements, and memories of Christmas past combine to make for a family
fun evening of entertainment.

The 25 Annual Advent Carol Festival, held each year at St. Paul’s United Church (on the corner of George and York), will be held on
Wednesday, December 3 at 7:30pm. Twelve local church and community choirs with 300 singers will present a program of new, as well as
familiar, Christmas music. This is a fundraiser for the Fredericton Community Food Bank; a freewill offering will be received. The event has

24. APEGNB Haunted Tour 2014 at the CSAC Raises More Than $20,000
The final tally is in, and with 2,361 visitors to the CSAC for this year's Haunted Tour, the APEGNB and volunteers have raised over $20,000
to support the centre for another year.

2014 marked the 6 year of the APEGNB Haunted Tour at the CSAC. Initially offered as a multiple-evening tour with both 'low scare' tours
for children and 'high scare' tours for youth and adults, the increasing popularity of the tour over the past few years meant finding an

additional venue that would align with the CSAC. The 'low scare' tour for kids now takes place at Science East (for the 2 year in a row) -another awesomely spooky historical building in Fredericton that has been transformed into a centre for educational programs.
With tours in the early years bringing in between $15,000-$17,000 before the move of the 'low scare' tours to Science East,
Frederictonians have shown their growing love for the APEGNB Haunted Tour with the past two years now bringing in $20,000 just for the
CSAC alone. Thank you, Fredericton!! We couldn't do it without you.

The star heroes in this story are the many volunteers with APEGNB who plan year-round to gear up for a few big days at the end of
October. APEGNB volunteers work together with our CSAC Boo Committee members to make all the magic happen, through forging
community partnerships like this year's donation by Home Depot, who generously gave a cart-load of materials that our volunteers used
to build the fright stations. Our biggest recognition goes to Bill Lamey and Christina Varner, the co-chairs of this year's APEGNB Haunted
Tour, who were a major motivating and organizing force. Bill and Christina, we LOVE you.
What happens to that $20,000 anyway? The Charlotte Street Arts Centre has been offering free arts and creative skills building workshops
to non-profit community organizations since 2005. Those workshops are led by professional artists, often artists at the beginning of their
careers, who work with an ever-growing network including Liberty Lane, First Steps (Saint John), Chrysalis House, Boys and Girls Clubs,
Stepping Stone Seniors' Centre and many more. Your entry fee to the annual APEGNB Haunted Tour at the CSAC supports confidencebuilding, creativity and collaborative skills for women and children rebuilding lives after domestic violence, at-risk youth, seniors, and
many others who might not normally have access the arts, and who therefore benefit greatly from your generosity.

25. Winner Announced for Seeing Charlotte Video Contest for the Charlotte Street Arts Centre
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre announces that Matt Carter has been selected as the winner for the Seeing Charlotte video contest.
Carter wins a prize of $600 towards the production of his proposed video project as well as a free membership with the New Brunswick
Filmmakers' Co-op. The completed production will be debuted at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre's Birthday Bash on March 21, 2015 as

part of the 10 -Year Anniversary Celebration.
About his upcoming project, Carter explains, "In the time I have spent in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, both as a tenant and as a guest, I
have come to notice the distinct “sound” the building has. One person can walk through the halls and their footsteps echo loudly through
all levels of the building. In essence, the building is as much alive with one person as it is with 20, 50 or 100 people. And then there’s the
dance studio…..talk about sound! I would like to present the building as a living, breathing structure through a unique video concept.
By pairing recorded sound of the various classes and events with the shots of the empty halls and studios, I believe the building’s
character can be represented and highlighted in a video presentation that engages and inspires the audience while focusing their
individual imaginations on the many things that already happen within the walls of this great building and the countless other things the
future holds."
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre congratulates Matt Carter on his fantastic idea and contest win. It is with great excitement that we
anticipate the upcoming video, Seeing Charlotte by Matt Carter, with an official screening at the centre upcoming in May 2015.

26. Winner Announcement for the Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre is pleased to announce that a winner has been selected for the 2014 Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for
Professional Development in the Arts. A jury of arts professionals met to review the scholarship applications and selected Cara Roy as this
year's recipient. Ms Roy is currently studying dance at École de danse contemporaine de Montréal(EDCMTL), which offers a full-time,
three-year Diploma of Collegial Studies in collaboration with the Cégep du Vieux Montréal. She will be formally presented with the
scholarship in late December when she returns home to Fredericton for the holidays.
The Charlotte Glencross Scholarship for Professional Development in the Arts, which honours the late artist, arts educator, and activist
Charlotte Glencross, aims to support developing practitioners in the arts. The scholarship is open to all age categories and disciplines,
where an artist or craftsperson seeks to build upon a new practice or establish a new direction in their work. The scholarship is in the
amount of $1,000.
Cara Roy began her dance journey at the age of three, and acquired her early formal dance training at Artemis Dance, in the Charlotte
Street Arts Centre. She has trained with a variety of dance teachers in Fredericton, including Dianne Garrett, Julie Scriver, Lesandra
Dodson, Ginny Steeves, and Kyle Gartshore. She has also participated in multiple master classes and out-of-province summer intensives
such as Dance Summer Dans and the 2012 EDCMTL Summer Intensiveby invitation. In 2013, she was accepted into the EDCMTL's threeyear pre-professional training program. She is also a passionate teacher, having worked as a teaching assistant to Dianne Garrett at
Artemis Dance since 2007, and as a guest instructor during her visits home.

This workshop will take place on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 6–9pm. The location is TBA, but will be in Fredericton, NB.
The field of art licensing is the reproduction of artistic works for commercial purposes and can encompass a wide variety of styles and
types of artwork including Visual Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography and Surface Design, just to name a few! This session will
cover various topics to give participants a sense of what the art licensing world is all about. What licensing means; How to get into
licensing; negotiating; royalty payments; how to develop a portfolio of images for licensing; preparing digital files for licensing; how to
protect your intellectual property; working with agents and contracts; examples of what other people are doing; what the Surtex Licensing
trade show is all about. This workshop will be presented by Bernard Burton, Executive Director of the Craft Alliance Atlantic Association.

Charlotte Street Arts Centre “opens the doors of creative expression to all”, and invites professional artists, emerging artists, indigenous
artists, multicultural artists, and students to apply.
Submission deadline for full proposals is Monday, December 1, 2014 by 4pm EST.

2. Shannex Parkland Fredericton Accepting Submission for Christmas Art Gallery Exhibition
Shannex Parkland Fredericton Retirement Living Complex, located at 35 Patience Lane, is having its second exhibition of
artwork in time for Christmas. The first exhibition was a great success with over 200 in attendance at the opening. The art
gallery space is located in the beautiful pedways that connect the buildings. The show will provide an opportunity for artists
to display and sell their artwork in time for the Christmas season. We are inviting local artists to display their work. All
mediums are welcome.
Artwork will be accepted until 3pm, Friday, November 21.
We are requesting that the artist’s name, the title of the work, the dimensions, the medium, the price a short biography of
the artist, and ideally a JPEG of the work or works be provided via email. Shannex is also inviting the public to the opening
