All was quiet on the plains and Front Range. Students, parents, and teachers had settled into a routine of classes
and homework. When suddenly…SUMMER VACATION HIT!
Panic ensued everywhere. Boredom! Apathy! Reruns! What were the kids and teens supposed to do for two
whole months? How were the parents supposed to find enough activities to entertain and stimulate their
children? How were teachers to expect their students to be prepared for school in the fall?
But wait! In the sky! What’s that? It’s a graphic novel! It’s a chapter book! It’s an encyclopedia! It’s all of the
above…it’s High Plains Library District!
When you pick up your reading log, you’ll receive a Super Buck just for registering! The Super Buck will give
you a dollar off fines and fees and is good until December 2015. Then you can start filling out your log. You’ll
not only be reading, you’ll get the chance to do activities like creating your own comic book, writing a letter
to an everyday hero, and picking up trash around the city. When you finish a section of the reading log, bring
it back to receive a prize! You’ll earn a prize for every section you complete. Prizes will include books and
spectacular superhero swag!
But that’s not all! There are also plenty of phenomenal programs you can attend to repel your archnemesis,
Mr. Boredom. Attend a superhero training camp, make your own movie, decorate super cakes and cookies,
play sports with soccer heroes, meet brave dogs, draw with a DC comic artist, and more!
So join us this summer and discover all the ways YOU can be a hero!

Perhaps the best things in life are free, but homes cost
money. A lot of money. Chances are you will need
to navigate the mortgage qualification and approval
process when buying a home. Come learn about
every aspect of the home buying process: what to
expect during the application and approval process,
income, credit and asset requirements for approval,
and if you’re not ready yet, the information needed to
prepare your finances to attain your home ownership
dream. The Money Matters Series is presented in
partnership with the Rocky Mountain Chapter of
Credit Unions.

The selection for May is Wild Life on the Rockies
(1909) by Enos Mills. He lived his life so energetically
and so outdoors that one could almost interpret Enos
Mills as impudent towards the reality of nature’s
power. His spelling choice in his book, “Wild Life on
the Rockies”, causes the reader to wonder whether his
choice of “wild life” referred to his own lifestyle afield
or the creatures that lured him out there.

Join the DIY revolution! Take an evening to learn to
make pillows. Sew the type of high end throw pillows
that you find in Pottery Barn. You will learn the skills
you will need to make one of these designer pillows.
Participants can choose to make one of several styles:
pillow cases, pillows with a corded edge, a simple no
edge, a ruffle, or one with a flanged edge. Change
with the seasons. Save money and make your own!
Please email Linda for a list of supplies you will need
to bring to class to complete your pillow. Five sewing
machines will be available for use. You may also bring

Colorado’s premier national park with award-winning
author Mary Taylor Young. Witness the rise, fall, and
rise of mountains. Meet ancient people who built
rock game drives still visible atop Trail Ridge. Meet
engineers sculpting Trail Ridge Road, CCC crews
building trails, and intrepid rangers rescuing lost
hikers. Learn how the Park’s elk were nearly wiped
out, then restored to become one of America’s premier
wildlife sights. Discover how a changing climate may
greatly alter Rocky in its next 100 years. This event is
free and seating is first come, first served. The author
will be signing books following the presentation.
