Kentucky militia in the War of 1812. He was elected to the state legislature both in Kentucky and in Missouri. He
was a member of the constitutional convention that drafted the original constitution of Missouri. He was the second
lieutenant governor of Missouri, but resigned from that position to be one of the three commissioners charged with
surveying the Santa Fe Trail. (The governor died in office only about a month later; if B. H. had not resigned, he
would have become governor.)
