Internship Posting: Scenic Carpenter Intern Duration: May 18 – June 6, 2015 (3 week contract) The Scenic Carpenter Intern is a seasonal, entry-­‐level position within the Carpentry team of the Freewill Shakespeare Festival. This position is responsible for a variety of assigned tasks relating to the build of the festival. The Scenic Carpenter Intern (SCI) reports directly to the Head Carpenter and the Production Manager (PM). The Scenic Carpentry Intern’s key responsibilities will be: • Scenic Carpentry – The SCI provides his/her labour as required under the supervision of the Head Carpenter in set construction and installation. • General Labour – The SCI provides his/her labour as required for the needs of setup of the Festival • Other Duties – The SCI is responsible for other duties as directed by the Production Manager. The Scenic Carpenter Intern’s time will be scheduled by the Head Carpenter and Production Manager to meet the needs of the Festival. This contract is specific to the build period of the Festival. The Scenic Carpenter Intern will work from May 18 to June 6th, approximately 8 hours per day (typically 8:00am-­‐
5:00pm). This is a government grant internship. Remuneration is a bursary of $1000 at the end of the contract. Some specialized skills required: • Good, safe scenery construction skills and practices. • Comfortable working with all power tools. • Must have recently attended post-­‐secondary studies, preferably within Theatrical training. • A good working knowledge of theatrical production hierarchy, terms, and etiquette. • The ability to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. • Class 5 Driver's License, preferred • Scenic Painting Techniques, preferred • Basic Welding Practices, preferred What we will accomplish at the end of the Internship: The intern will develop their knowledge and skills in the technical theatre. They will learn and execute projects involving scenic painting as well as have the opportunity to meet and work with leading technical theatre professionals in Edmonton. The intern will be provided with a bursary from the Government of Alberta equalling $1000. How to apply: To participate in the Serving Communities Internship Program (SCiP) and receive a $1000 at the end of your SCiP internship, you must meet the following requirements: • You must be a post-­‐secondary student living in Alberta. • You must be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or an international student with appropriate authorization as may be required from Citizenship and Immigration Canada to participate in SCiP. Currently, this is a valid off campus work permit. Up to 10% of SCiP internships can be filled by international students. • You must be currently enrolled at one of the 26 publicly-­‐funded post-­‐secondary institutions in Alberta. You may be a part-­‐time or full-­‐time continuing education, apprenticeship, certificate, diploma, undergraduate, graduate or PhD student. • You must be registered in and attending at least one class at this institution during the academic year in which you begin your internship (August 1st – July 31st) and you must be able to provide proof of enrolment indicating this. Please note, an acceptance letter, either conditional or full, from a post-­‐secondary institution does not qualify you for the program until you have begun attending at least one class. • You may not receive compensation other than the SCiP bursary for a SCiP internship. This includes a wage or honorarium. • You may not use a SCiP internship to meet an academic requirement or receive school credit. This includes using a SCiP internship for a course placement or practicum. • Additionally, you are only able to receive one SCiP bursary per academic year (August 1st – July 31st). However; you may complete additional SCiP internships without receiving a bursary. Based on the above criteria, if you do not qualify for SCiP and complete a SCiP internship regardless, the $1000 bursary will not be rewarded. We cannot determine full eligibility for a bursary until you have finished an internship.
