The rocky mount with the Abbey rises from the ocean floor, a short way off the coastline, and surrounded by the sea—or the sand at low tide. The view is breathtaking, for its sheer size, the majestic proportions of its buildings and its beauty. The first church was consecrated in 709 and in 966 a cummity of Benedictine Monks took up residence. In the XIth and XIIth centuries a Romanesque church was built and in the XIIIth century a gothic masterpiece, known as “La Merveille” was added. Mont St Michel was the most important medieval pilgrimage site in the western world, and as you can imagine the village that developed around it is equally steeped in history and features many medieval buildings. A guided visit followed by some free time for you to enjoy Mont St Michel at your own pace.
