Cowboy
hadn’t been ridden much,”
Searles told BBC reporters.
“(They) were also chuck wagon
cooks, and they were known for
being songsters - helping the
cattle stay calm.”
Searles, a retired history professor and well-published author on the topic, explains how
the open range created an independence that black men were
denied in other early American
settings. On the flipside, the
long cattle drives created a rare
interdependence between cowboys of all races.
“As a cowboy you had to have
a degree of independence. You
could not have an overseer ...
they had to go on horseback and
from page 2
they may be gone for days,” he
explained, coining the phenomenon as ‘range equality.’ “When
(they) were involved in driving
cattle up the trail, cowboys depended upon each other because
at times they were in dangerous
situations when they really
needed the help of the cowboy
next to them.”
The documentary also includes interviews with descendants of America’s first black
cowboys and those who carry
on the tradition still today.

Cowboys or read the story, go
