SACS Summer Reading Middle School Lists May 2014 Dear Parents, The research is clear; the more children read, the better they do academically. The better students do academically, the likelier it is for them to achieve a successful future after middle and high school. We know it is not easy in this media-saturated world to bring kids back to that ancient device: the book. But for the child who reads, the rewards are great. Please help us by enforcing our summer reading requirements. You can locate these books at the library, on e-reader stores, at local bookstores (check out the Used Book Superstore in Danvers!), online, from former 7th-grade students (they had the same selections last year), etc. If you have any questions at all, including how to find or select the appropriate book from the choices, please contact us. Please sign this form and return it to your child’s current ELA teacher before June 17th. Dear Students, We ask you to read this summer. We are not requiring journals or projects because for us, the goal is simple: we want you to read anywhere you can, anytime you can--the beach, the park, the backyard, the bus. We have chosen books that we believe will be both interesting and just challenging enough. You are required to read one of the following books, and there will be a simple test on your chosen book when we return to school. But recognize these requirements are a minimum; read other books that interest you this summer! The more you read, the more you know, and the better you are at reading. At Salem Academy, we are committed to helping advance students’ reading levels throughout their years here. As a result, we have elected to designate a separate summer reading book for students currently reading below grade level. We believe that doing so will better empower your student, enabling him or her to access and enjoy the text in a way that benefits and propels his or her overall reading comprehension entering 7th grade. The one required summer reading book for your student will be: The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (See reverse) One version of the book is pictured below. You can locate this book at the library, on e-reader stores, at local bookstores (check out the Used Book Superstore in Danvers!), online, or at a Scholastic bookfair (which SACS will be holding on-site at the end of this year).
