“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are
blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for
you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me
something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I
was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you
clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you
came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when
did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something
to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing
clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go
to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did
for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for
me.’ Matthew 25:34-40
In the United Methodist Church, we vow to support our church with
our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. If
We are praying, participating and giving Christians we will seek ways
we can serve. If we are on our Emmaus 4th day we will seek ways to
serve.
The scriptures are full of God’s call to help and serve others: “There
will always be poor people in the land. Therefore, I command you to
be open handed toward your brothers and sisters and toward the poor
and needy….” (Deuteronomy 15:11) “What does the Lord require of
you but to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your
God.” (Micah 6:8), “…let your light shine before people that they may
see your good works and give glory to your Father in
heaven.” (Matthew 5:16), “…the Son of Man (Jesus) did not come to
be served but to serve….” (Matthew 20:28), “Share with God’s people
who are in need. Practice hospitality.” (Romans 12:13), “There are different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of
service but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working but
the same God works all of them in all men.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-6),
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good
works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10),
“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is
dead.” (James 2:26)
There are many ways to serve God both in the Christian community
and in the community that surrounds us. Here are a few ways you and
I can be engaged in acts of SERVICE that fulfill and prove our faith:
Attendance in Christian community (by our Presence) is in itself service if we assemble with others because we want to encourage others.
Encouragement is an act of service. We can call people or visit people
at home or in the hospital to share God’s love. We can offer to teach
Sunday School. We can sing in the Choir. We can read the Scripture
in worship on Sundays, fix a meal for our Fellowship dinners or for
someone recovering at home. We can help out with Church events of
all kinds. We can help with VBS or as supplemental Youth ministry or
Children’s ministry workers. We can pick people up when they need
transportation to Church or to the doctor or to the Grocery Store or to
a job interview. We can go on Mission trips outside our community
or participate in mission ministries right here in our town. We can
buy food for a Food Pantry and offer to help out. We can give financial help, offer to take and pick up someone’s children from school.
We can offer free Child care, mow someone’s lawn, help someone pay
the rent, give a Bible, Christian book or CD or offer an hour just to
listen and talk to someone who is lonely or struggling with life. In that
context, we can offer to pray. We can participate in prison ministries
and Homeless ministries and get our hair cut for “locks of love” or
raise money for by walking for breast cancer research or participating
in fund raisers for sick children and adults. There are so many ways –
big and small- that we can DO SOMETHING that serves God and our
fellow human beings. Helen Keller, a woman who was deaf and blind,
who blossomed because of the service of Ann Sullivan, said, “I am only
one, but I am still one. I can’t do everything, but I can do something.
I will not neglect to do the something I can do.” This needs to be our
attitude. Yes, we Pray. Yes, we assemble together to add our Presence. Yes, we Give our financial Gifts . But we don’t stop there. WE
DO SOMETHING IN SERVICE. Serving is the way of Jesus and so
we follow Him in it. Pray and look and you will see ways to serve. We
are blessed to be a blessing!!! Thank you for your service!!!
