PERRY 200 FISHING
CHALLENGE UPDATE
Leader Board
More than 100 fish have been entered into the
Perry 200 Fishing Challenge as of this date. There
are five weeks left to enter. If you catch a big fish
in one of the twenty categories, enter it into the
contest. It’s free! There are about six weeks left.
Just a reminder S.O.N.S. members who do not
win, but have entered a fish, will be eligible for
a consolation drawing which will be held at our
September General Membership Meeting. Below
are photos taken of two contest entries.
For more information and an updated leader
board, visit our web page at sonsoflakeerie.org.

THE LINE RECYCLE
RECEPTACLES
During one of our recent kids’
fishing clinics, we noticed pieces
of line on the ground around the
Waterworks Ponds within the
shadow of the fishing line recycling
stations. The stations were built by
Eagle Scout Martin Bonner of Troop
182 BSA in 2010. He and the scout
team built 23 of these stations that
were placed at Elk Creek, Trout
Run, Presque Isle, the South Pier
and the Public Dock. Loose fishing
line is a hazard to wildlife. Please
dispose of your unwanted fishing
line at these stations.
James Stahon holds the 33 inch brown trout
that he caught off of the point in 60 feet of
water off of the Point. He used a green/
gold custom crawler harness with 1.5 oz
inline weight off the planer board 15-18’
down. There were no fin clips on the fish.
T.R.E.C. STURGEON GET NEW HOME
Thanks to a $3500 grant from the S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie the
sturgeons in the aquaponics lab at the Tom Ridge Environmental
Center have a new home. The fish had out grown their tanks. The
grant provided funding to purchase a new 750 gallon tank.
The young lake sturgeon moved into the Aquaponics Lab at the
Tom Ridge Environmental Center in 2011. They came from the
Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The fish were originally
provided by the Wisconsin DNR to the Cleveland museum.
Space restraints in Cleveland however, forced the transfer to the
Ridge Center. There is a female and a smaller male in tanks at
the T.R.E.C. The female sturgeon is outgrowing the male fish.
The female appears to have been “hogging” their food so they
have been separated. Regional Science Consortium and DCNR
Naturalists are studying the fish.
You may visit the Aquaponics Lab at the T.R.E.C. Center by asking
the volunteers at the visitor’s desk for a tour of the lab.
Presque Isle State Park Naturalist Ray Bierbower poses alongside the new
750-gallon tank purchased by a $3500 grant from the S.O.N.S. of Lake
Erie. Note the female sturgeon that is visible in the viewing glass .
PFBC REMINDS BOATERS THAT
B.U.I. IS A CRIME
HARRISBURG, Pa. (June 27)
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC)
reminds boaters that operating a boat under the influence
(BUI) is a serious crime and a threat to public safety.
“Boating under the influence is no different than driving a
car after someone’s been drinking,” said PFBC Executive
Director John Arway. “Alcohol impairs an individual’s
ability to operate a vehicle safely. For the safety of all
individuals on the water, please do not operate your boat,
jet ski, canoe or kayak if you’ve been drinking.”
So far this year, five individuals have been charged
with boating under the influence. PFBC waterways
conservation officers arrested 60 individuals in 2012 and
62 in 2011 for boating under the influence.
“Many boaters may not know that the threshold for BUI
is the same as with motor vehicles – 0.08 percent,” said
Corey Britcher, director of the PFBC Bureau of Law
Enforcement. “Fish and Boat officers regularly patrol
waterways and will have an increased presence around
this holiday.”
If convicted of boating under the influence, operators
could face fines and jail time.
Pennsylvania has more than 331,000 registered boats.
MIKE BLEECH SAYS...
GREAT LAKES WATER LEVELS RISING
The following was posted June 27th, 2013 at 8:38 pm
by Bill Steffen under Bill’s Blog, News, Weather
Here’s the link: http://blogs.woodtv.com/2013/06/27/
great-lakes-water-levels-continue-upward-trend/
The water level of all five Great Lakes (and Lake St. Clair) are now
higher than one year ago. The level of Lake Michigan/Huron gained
another inch in the past week. The level is up 4” in the last month
and it’s now one inch above the level of one year ago. The lake is
now 13” above the record lowest June level of 1964. It’s still 18”
below the 100-year average (remember I linked to this article from
the Milwaukee Journal). The article states “The St. Clair (River) has
been heavily dredged for over a century, and the federal government
has long acknowledged that this human meddling in the riverbed
has led to a permanent drop of about 16 inches from Michigan and
Huron’s long-term average. A Canadian conservation group created
by property owners from northern Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay hired
its own engineering firm to conduct a study of what was going on in
the St. Clair River back in 2004. That study said the water lost from
the lakes by expanding the river channel was actually much greater
than 16 inches – and getting worse.” If this is to be believed, without
the dredging, we’d be at or even above average water levels right now.
Lake Superior has had the 2nd biggest spring water level rise in
recorded (back to 1918) history. It’s also up 4” in the last month (each
inch is 552 billion gallons!) and is now six inches below the long-term
average. It’s now 18” above the lowest June recorded level (in 1926)
and 18” below the highest recorded June level (in 1986). Lake Erie
is up 6” in the last month, 3” inches higher than at this time last year
and just 3” below the average June level. Lake Ontario has gained
a whopping TEN INCHES of water in the last month. Ontario is 11”
higher than one year ago and 5” ABOVE the century average.
Erie Times News outdoor writer, Mike
Bleech wrote in a recent column
that he uses an ice chest to carry
live minnows. He points out that an
ice bucket is larger and helps keep
the minnows cool. Emerald shiners
are especially sensitive to heat. Add
some ice and they will last longer.
You’ll need an aerator too. It might
be worth a try.

presentations.
Dr.Stuart A. Ludsin, Assistant Professor
of Biology,from Ohio State University’s
Department of Evolution, Ecology and
Organismal Biology addressed the
LEPMAG Committee in Erie regarding
the next phase of the group’s work,
developing a yellow perch management
policy. Dr. Ludsin talked about his
research and findings during his perch
studies.
they are of higher quality. It appears that
warm winters having a negative effect
by reducing egg quality. One possible
reason is that female yellow perch during
short warm winters do not have the time
to develop their ovaries. It has also been
shown that the perch larvae produced
after warm winters are smaller and less
viable than those resulting from a longer
colder season.
He talked about the potential impacts of
climate change on fish in the Great Lakes,
and focusing particularly on two predicted
impacts: warming temperatures and an
increase in extreme precipitation. Shorter
winters and fewer days below freezing
and little or no ice cover as well as
record high temperatures are impacting
yellow perch. Warmer air temperatures
also lead to warmer water temperatures,
which could impact coolwater species
like yellow perch and walleye.
Dr. Ludsin pointed out that warmer
temperatures are producing harmful
algae blooms. These are already a
common occurrence in Lake Erie’s
western basin, where warm, shallow
waters and nutrient runoff from the
surrounding agricultural lands. The
effects of these blooms on Lake Erie’s
fish community by impacting how fish
forage for food and the toxins produced
by the algae severely impact egg and
larval development.
His studies have shown that very warm
winters are followed by failed year
classes of both walleye and yellow
perch the next spring, whereas good
year-classes only occur following long,
cold winters. Year-class strength is an
index used by agencies that signifies
how many juvenile fish are present in
the ecosystem during late summer,
essentially serving as an indicator of
that spawning season’s reproductive
success. That same index is also used
by fisheries managers to help determine
how many adults will recruit (survive) to
the fishery two years later, and to help
set quotas on how many adults can be
harvested during a particular fishing
season.
Algae blooms also produce areas of
hypoxia (lack of oxygen) or dead zones
in Lake Erie. These dead zones produce
areas where food is scarce causing a low
fat store in perch thereby affecting their
ability to survive through the winter.
Dr.Ludsin said that studies have also
shown that yellow perch eggs that
are produced after a long winter are
significantly larger than eggs that are
produced after a very short winter, and

LIBERTY PIER ACCESS AREA IS GOOD FOR KIDS
On July 2nd Sister Pat Lupo from the Neighborhood Art House loaded 20 inner city kids onto an
EMTA trolley bus taking them to Liberty Pier where they were met by S.O.N.S. volunteers. The kids
were provided with rods, reels, bait and instructions by our S.O.N.S. guys. They caught fish and had
a great time then loaded back on the bus and then back to the Neighborhood Art House. It worked
great. One girl even caught a 15” largemouth bass.
Dr. Ludsin also talked about changes to
Lake Erie brought about by the Clean
Water Act that brought about reduced
phosphorous levels in the Lake. Recently
however, phosphate loads are increasing
with 75% entering the Lake via the
Maumee River. Phosphates are essential
to a healthy fishery. Too much is not good
however. The filtering by zebra mussels
for example are minimizing some of the
effects.
The clearer water facilitates predation on
yellow perch larva by white perch which
are growing in abundance in the Western
Basin of Lake Erie due to the warmer
climate. White perch thrive in brackish
waters and do not do well in cold water.
They come from the Atlantic Coast and
entered the Great Lakes through the
Welland Canal in the 1980’s. Walleye
are their usual predators but reduced
walleye stocks have allowed them to
flourish. After a decade of poor walleye
hatches it is estimated the stocks have
diminished to an estimated 17,000,000.
Dr. Ludsin stated that the plumes of
sediment from the Maumee are important
right now to hide newly hatched from
their predators.
Yellow perch are on the decline in the
Western Basin but improving in the
Central Basin.
He concluded his presentation by saying
that more research and monitoring are
critical to reduce the uncertainty of
yellow perch success. The LEPMAG
efforts will now be directed to the study
of yellow perch.
We also learned that the Ohio Department
of Natural Resources has tagged and
released 6700 yellow perch near Fairport
Harbor. PIT tags (Passive Integrated
Transponders) were placed in the fish.
The PIT tags are a tiny wire that is not
visible externally. Fish are scanned
electronically for the tags. Chuck Murray
from the Lake Erie Unit said that he will
periodically scan perch that are being
cleaned at Poor Richard’s Bait and
Tackle. The study is being conducted
to monitor migration patterns of perch.
One fish has already been found off of
Ashtabula which is 30 miles from where
they were released.
A representative of the Ontario
Commercial Fishermen stated that
the demand for rainbow smelt has
been down so that they have not been
targeted. This may account for the large
numbers that are being caught by local
anglers while perch fishing.
