PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I just want to say THANK YOU!!! Good Companions is a fantastic Club and I
have enjoyed being a part of the Board for a number of years. The past 4 years as
your President has been a learning experience. We did have 3 years of classes and
training in Phases1, 2 and 3 of the working together model in Governance with the
consultants hired by the City. This training has been so very valuable. The Board
has been trying to put into practice all that we learned---but there are still weak
spots. The good thing is that we have all the tools we need to do better!
This time has also given me a new appreciation for our members. YOU are our
Club! YOU are the reason we exist.
We have amazing members in our Club. Do you ever wonder who washes all the
soiled tablecloths and dirty tea towels??—or waters plants or takes care of all the
nitty-gritty things that need doing??
It is our wonderful volunteers.
YOU are Amazing!!! We cannot function without you. How can I ever thank you.
To all of our dedicated members who support us---THANK YOU.
To our Staff---Marjorie, Salmon and Carol---thank you for your support and help.
You have all been super! And Thank you, Margaret, for mentoring the Board all
these years.
How can I thank the Executive and the Board---you have been wonderful to work
with and I thank each one of you so very much! To the New Board—I wish you
every success. Enjoy your time working together. Thank you all!! God Bless
June

FROM THE PEN OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to Spring Yes, it’s time to think gardening, Robins singing at
dawn, taking a lovely walk in the park (before the mosquitos know we’re there). lol
Thank you all for wishing me the best for 15 years of dedicated service to
you, the Members. It has been a real pleasure, and no, I am not going anywhere
anytime soon! Thank you for attending the AGM, but those who could not make it,
swing by the office to pick up an AGM package. Ask for a Member Satisfaction
Survey as well. Thanks. Salmon, my IT staff, has asked me to remind those who
have not filled out an FSII post-test to talk to him for same.
Welcome new Directors – Thanks for making a commitment to the betterment
of your Club! We can take a fresh look at our Strategic Business Plan in effect until
2016.
360 Members to date!! Wow!!! With a goal of 400, we could potentially meet
the magic number by our next General Meeting in June. Thanks for inviting your
friends, neighbours, and people you meet while you are out and about mingling at
the mall, post office, doctor/dental offices. You ARE the Club!
Musically inclined? Let’s welcome Suzanne & Paul back with our popular
Folk Music Singers drop-in activity
Come one Come all….Our Annual Rummage Sale is going to bring in a lot of
new faces and $$$...My goal is approximately $3,000. And I need volunteers to
make it a huge success…..so, if you are willing to help, sign up in the foyer.
Start your Spring Cleaning and trot off over to the Club with your ‘treasures’ 
Remember our Motto ~ FRIENDSHIP WITH A DIFFERENCE ~
Have a Blessed Easter and enjoy some refreshing quality time during Spring with

Depression is Not a Normal Part of Growing Older
Depression is a true and treatable medical condition, not a normal part of aging. However older adults
are at an increased risk for experiencing depression. If you are concerned about a loved one, offer to
go with him or her to see a health care provider to be diagnosed and treated.
Depression is not just having "the blues" or the emotions we feel when grieving the loss of a loved
one. It is a true medical condition that is treatable, like diabetes or hypertension.
How Do I Know If It's Depression?
Someone who is depressed has feelings of sadness or anxiety that last for weeks at a time. He or she may also
experience–










Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and/or helplessness
Irritability, restlessness
Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable
Fatigue and decreased energy
Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions
Insomnia, early–morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
Overeating or appetite loss
Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not get better, even with
treatment
How is Depression Different for Older Adults?


Older adults are at increased risk. We know that about 80%
of older adults have at least one chronic health condition, and
50% have two or more. Depression is more common in people
who also have other illnesses (such as heart disease or cancer) or
whose function becomes limited.
Older adults are often misdiagnosed and undertreated.
Healthcare providers may mistake an older adult's symptoms of
depression as just a natural reaction to illness or the life changes
that may occur as we age, and therefore not see the depression
as something to be treated. Older adults themselves often share
this belief and do not seek help because they don't understand
that they could feel better with appropriate treatment.
How Many Older Adults Are Depressed?
The good news is that the majority of older adults are not depressed. Some estimates of major depression in
older people living in the community range from less than 1% to about 5% but rise to 13.5% in those who
require home healthcare and to 11.5% in older hospital patients.

A Chuckle From Dr Patricia’s Desk:
I have to share this amusing, yet enlightening story from
Healthline News. Just when you thought you’d heard
everything. But hey, if it works for chickens, what a boon
this would be for the thousands among us that suffer
hearing challenges. Enjoy.
“DO CHICKENS HOLD THE KEY TO A CURE
FOR HEARING LOSS?”
Written by Shawn Radcliffe | Published on February 15, 2014
Chickens can restore their own damaged hearing, and their feat may one day help people with hearing
loss. Chickens have the amazing ability to restore their own hearing, and this trait is inspiring a nonprofit
organization in their search for a cure for hearing loss in humans. The Hearing Health Foundation’s “Chirp the
News” video features the group’s new mascot: a baby chick. Locked within the ears of this chick is the potential to
restore hearing and cure tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other
Communication Disorders, about 36 million adults in the U.S. have some form of hearing loss, and 25 million are
affected by tinnitus. “As someone who lives with hearing loss every day, I am personally thrilled with the
prospects for a cure,” said Shari Eberts, chairman of the Hearing Health Foundation’s Board of Directors, in an
email to Healthline. “Life with hearing loss can be frustrating. Sometimes you miss the joke when everyone else is
laughing, and sometimes you miss important information because you don't hear it. Supportive family and friends
can make living with hearing loss easier, but a genuine cure would be life changing.”
The Chicken’s Magic Ears
The secret to the chicken’s auditory magic is that supporting cells in its inner ear can replace hair cells that have
been damaged by loud noises or other causes. And chickens aren’t the only animals that can restore their own
damaged hearing. All vertebrates other than mammals can do the same. And preliminary research has shown
that mice can regain some of their hearing using supporting cells that turn into hair cells—in the lab, at least.
Researchers supported by the Hearing Health Foundation hope to find a way to coax the supporting cells in the
inner ears of people to transform into functional hair cells. Their goal is to have a cure within a decade.
Read more about this unorthodox, but encouraging research at www.healthline.com/health-news/aging-couldchickens-be-the-key-to-hearing-loss-cure-021514 .
While we await the cure for hearing loss, please continue to rely on us at Audia Hearing
Care Centre to make your life better through regular hearing health check-ups and great
hearing aid products. We look forward to seeing you.

Zumba Gold @ Good Companions 50 Plus Club
ZUMBA IS A ‘Latin-based Dance workout!
“It is a low to medium-impact dance workout combining fast and slow
dance rhythms to tone and sculpt the body. Zumba uses the principles
of interval training – alternating fast and slow sequences – to vary the
intensity.” Intensity is driven by the different rhythms of the music and
the steps – meringue, salsa, reggaeton, cumbia, calypso, even a little
hip-hop.”
Learning the Zumba dance steps is stimulating to the mind, and
one 21-year study published in the New England Journal of Medicine
found that dancing as a physical activity may be associated with a lower
risk of dementia.
With Zumba Gold, which specifically targets boomers, the moves
are kept fairly simple and the steps repetitive, so men and women of all
ages and fitness levels can participate. But don’t mistake simple for
easy. You get a heart-pumping workout that can burn up to 700
calories an hour, depending on the level of intensity.
Lose Weight, Help your Heart and Have Fun …
