COMING EVENTS PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME
Over the past two weeks I have been meeting with the teachers, speech pathologists and
language support teachers to review each child’s Individual Education Plan. These plans
have been revised to show the goals your child will be working on over the next ten weeks.

On the 19th March the final School Council meeting was held and the new School Board was

formed. I would like to welcome Troy Keenan as the Chair of our new School Board and

Jo Wiese as Deputy Chair. On behalf of the school community I would like to acknowledge
and thank Jo for her work in leading the school council and school community through the

representative.

I would like to thank all the parents, volunteers and supporters of our school who have made

this term a very successful one. Everyone who helps out in the classrooms and with our

planning and working hard to raise money to support the provision of resources for classroom

SPEECH PATHOLOGY
Working memory is the ability to hold information in our minds whilst processing this information at the same time.
Information is only stored very briefly in working memory and it is lost quickly, particularly when distractions occur.
Therefore it is firstly important that children are attending and focused on actively listening to verbal information.
Make sure you have your child’s attention before giving instructions. At school the children are taught to listen with
their ‘whole body’ and you can use this as a cue when engaging in learning tasks and activities with your child.
What is Whole Body Listening?
Good listening is more than hearing. It is an activity of the mind that involves:

Sitting or standing still without moving your hands and feet

Looking – at the person who is talking

Listening – to what is being said

Concentrating on what is being said without interrupting

Thinking – about what is being said

FRIENDSHIP SKILLS
The Core Friendship Skills for children that we focus on in our classroom
programmes are:
Co-operation:

How to share, how to take turns, how to work together towards a
common goal
Communication:

Using words to explain what you want and listening to others
respectfully

Paying attention to body language (e.g. - making eye contact,
smiling, being able to read others’ non verbal reactions)
Understanding and managing feelings:

Being able to express feelings in ways that help others
understand you

Recognising and responding to others’ feelings
Accepting and including others:

Recognising others’ needs for respect and friendship
P&C FUNDRAISING
Your FLDC School Board conducted its first
meeting on March 19, completing the formal
transition to independent public school status.
The 12 person Board consisting of 4 FLDC staff,
5 parents and 3 members of the community
provides a great mix of skills and enthusiasm
that we trust will support the continued success
of the school.
The Board is pleased to advise that our first
annual open meeting will be held on May 7, at
which the 2014 Annual Report will be presented
and attendees will have the opportunity to ask
questions and provide valued feedback. It would
be great to see a strong turnout from the school
community.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate Wendy, Jo
and the School Council for their fantastic work in
first achieving IPS status, and then in
preparation for the transition.
