Metroʼs K-9 officers wow crowd

Metro’s finest four-legged
officers showed off their skills
during a K-9 demonstration
last weekend at the Metro
Nashville Police Training
Academy’s canine training
field.
The Metro Police Canine
Unit’s handlers joined members of the Davidson County
Sheriff’s Department for the
2nd Annual Demonstration
Day at the Tucker Road facility. The crowd braved the rain
to watch as dog-handler teams
demonstrated tactics used in
real-life scenarios where dogs
aid human police officers in
tracking and capturing suspects, locating missing persons and sniffing out narcotics.
Nashville’s Jacob Aldridge,
11, said the dogs “listened better” than his family’s Border
Collie. The rising fifth-grader
added that demonstration
inspired him to want to join
the K-9 unit when he’s older.
“It’s so neat to see how
smart the dogs are,” Aldridge
said, briefly taking his eyes off
the dogs. “I’ve always wanted
to be a police officer but now I
know I want to work with the
dog unit.”
His mom was equally
impressed by the showcase

Pedestrians can soon walk
straight through the heart of
Green Hills by using the new
sidewalk. It’s another step
toward making the area more
accessible to the public, and it
addresses Americans with
Disability concerns. The new
one-mile long walkway will
connect pre-existing sidewalks,
and will allow for more foot
traffic off of Hillsboro Road.
Metro Public Works started
construction on Monday, June
1. So far, it has caused some
lane closures and diversion of
traffic. Metro Police Officers
have been on-site to ensure traffic control.
This comes at a time when
walk-ability and development
has been at the forefront
of neighborhood discussions,
causing some locals to disagree
on the importance of side-
walks.
Katherine Hudson recently
moved to Green Hills. She
believes the sidewalk will be a
great addition to the area.
“I’m a runner, and for me, I
need these sidewalks. It’s
ridiculously difficult to run,
bike, or even walk in this area,”
Hudson said. “No matter the
cost, it’s necessary for the community, and I think it makes
the streets look better too.”
Hudson also said the construction has yet to affect her
travel time and thinks it’s a
“non-issue”.
But, for some, the return on
investment isn’t worth the
headache.
“I just don’t think people are
going to use them,” Mary
Johnson said. “All of this construction is taking the green
out of Green Hills.”
Construction is expected to
last three weeks.

Charter initiative?
Songwriter Jimmy Copens
(he penned “I want my country
back”) has entered the Dist. 23
race as a write-in candidate to
represent Belle Meade and West
Meade on the Metro Council.
At a Belle Meade City Hall candidate forum, Copens floated
the idea that West Meade secede
from the Metro Charter so the
community could impose
restrictions on development.
He pointed to Belle Meade
building restrictions as an
example. “Amending the Metro
Charter is wide open,” a competing Dist. 23 candidate Jim
Roberts shared with a questioner from the audience. Roberts
didn’t say whether he supported Copens’ idea. Drawing on his
legal experience, Roberts noted
that passage of a Metro Charter
ballot initiative is all that is
needed.

Missed deadline:
Hotel
manager Thom Druffel is “full
speed ahead” in his campaign
to represent Dist. 23 on the
Metro Council. He just forgot
the May 28 deadline to petition
the Election Commission for a
place on the ballot. He has qualified as a write-in candidate. “I
am not a career politician,”
Druffel explained in a flyer. He
asks voters to consider his
strong involvement in community affairs then write him into
office. Druffel is particularly
associated with education initiatives that support Nashville's
thriving hospitality industry.
He is an adjunct professor of
hospitality
business
at
Tennessee State University and
Druffel founded the hospitality

Smooth Moving
After a Realtor finds your
family the perfect new home
you are immediately filled with
excitement.
However,
the
thought of actually moving
incites a great deal of stress.
According to The Huffington
Post, moving is one of
life’s most stressful events.
Thankfully there are ways to
make this process streamlined
and simple.
Attention to detail and
organization are key components in ensuring a smooth
move. De-stress your move with
these tips:
The Purge and Sort
The moving process should
always begin with purging and
sorting your belongings. Go
through all the rooms in your
current home and toss anything you don’t want to keep.
Moving unwanted items is
more expensive and it causes
added move-in day stress. Once
you have successfully purged
your home, begin to sort and
categorize. Take note of which
items may need special packaging or moving instructions.
Create a Moving Binder
Designate a binder for all
moving related materials. This
should be used to keep a
detailed inventory of all belongings, estimates, receipts and
invoices. All of these items are
essential throughout the moving process.
Order Supplies
Ordering plenty of boxes
and wrapping materials is crucial to a quick and successful
move. Running in and out to
buy more supplies wastes time
and wares on patience. In addition, having a surplus of
sharpies, labels, tape and scissors on hand is a must.
Color Coding
Using a color coding system
during the moving process will
allow you to easily identify
where certain boxes belong.
Trying to read sharpie notes
can slow down the process. Try
assigning a color for each area
in the house. For example,
boxes marked with a red sticker
go in the kitchen. This will
allow the moving company to
work at a quicker pace and
ensure your belongings end up
in the right spot the first time.
Tie-up Loose Ends
Ensure all administrative tasks are completed.
Forwarding
mail,
health
records and refilling prescriptions are all important pieces to
the moving process. Taking a
day to make sure all of these
items get completed will alleviate a significant amount of
stress. Parents—make sure you
have transferred all school
records for the kids.
First Night Survival Kit
The first night in your new
home will be a thrilling adventure. Coming prepared after a
long, tiring day will put your
mind at ease. Packing plenty of
clothes for a few days, toiletries
and prescriptions is a must.
Also ensure you have some
snacks, bottles of water, batteries, flashlights and blankets.
These items will make your
first night more comfortable
and allow you to rest easy.
Moving can be exhausting,
but with these tips you can cut
back on the stress and soak in
the joy of starting a new chapter. Preparation on the frontend allows for much celebration on the back-end and will
make your move as worry-free
as possible.

MNPS Virtual School expanding to fifth, sixth grades
Tennessee’s first virtual
school is expanding. MNPS
Virtual School will, for the first
time ever, offer a full-time middle school starting in August
2015. With the addition of fifth
and sixth grades, Virtual is now
officially a 5-12 school.
Fall enrollment at MNPS
Virtual School is now open, with
more than 50 courses available
for high school students and
more than 20 for middle school
students.
Virtual School students come
from all over Nashville and from
all walks of life. Some choose
Virtual because it fits their personal learning styles, others
have life circumstances that
may exclude them from a traditional school day. MNPS Virtual
School was the first virtual
school to open in Tennessee. The
school is currently open for
enrollment for the 2015-16 school
year, accepting both full-time
and part-time students. Last
year, enrollment increased to
140 full-time students and 550
part-time.
Enrollment information and
a full course catalogue are available on the MNPS Virtual
School website.

Seniors...
From Page One
-ernment agencies, the group’s
America’s Health Rankings
2015 Senior Report ranked
Tennessee 44th in the U.S.,
down one spot from last year.
The report considered 35 measures, such as physical inactivity, hip fracture rate, food insecurity, obesity, hospitalization
rates, ability to obtain prescription medications and lifestyle
factors such as drinking habits.
Contributing to the overall
low score, an increasing number of Tennessee seniors are
obese and don’t regularly participate in physical activities.
In the biggest change from last
year, the state fell a whopping
30 percent in the physical inactivity category, dropping from
39 to 48 in the nation. In a related measure, 34 percent of
Tennessee seniors are considered obese, compared to a quarter of seniors nationwide.
Other findings showed that
the state’s seniors lag in other
areas with major health implications. Tennessee seniors have
a high rate of food insecurity;
more than 21 percent of
Tennesseans over age 60 struggle with access to healthy,
affordable food. Hip fractures,
which can have a detrimental
impact on seniors’ long-term
health, placed Tennessee at 48,
while gum disease has led to 25
percent of all Tennessee having
all their teeth extracted.
There is good news. The
state ranked first in the nation
for chronic drinking problems,
decreasing 29 percent over 2014.
Also, most Tenneesseans aged
65 and older have prescription
drug coverage and have been
vaccinated against the flu.
The group’s analysis can be
used by local agencies to assist
seniors in becoming healthier:
"Tennessee’s senior population
is expected to grow by 46.3 percent between 2015 and 2030;
that’s why improving the
health of our seniors is both a
moral and an economic imperative."
Recently, the Cigna Foundation
awarded grants totaling $60,000
to be divided among three
Nashville-based non-profits to
help local seniors access services
aimed at improving health. The
YMCA of Middle Tennessee,
FiftyForward and Bethlehem
Centers of Nashville received
equal shares of the award.
The YMCA is using its grant
for a program focused on preventing falls. “A Matter of
Balance” is offered at three of
its location, reaching 75 percent
of its senior members. One in
three adults over age 65 falls
each year, making falls the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries among people in
that age bracket, according to
the Centers for Disease Control
(CDC). Emergency departments
treat about 2.5 million nonfatal
fall injuries among older
adults.
Even the fear of falling leads
some seniors to become homebound.
Nell Broderick, a Hermitage
resident who participates in the
YMCA program, said she broke
a hip falling in her home a few
years ago.
“After my fall, I thought
home was the safest place for
me,” the 67-year-old recalled.
“The Y’s program was really
beneficial to me. It helped me to
become stronger. I’m really
grateful that it was available.”
FiftyForward is using funds
to support Adult Day Services,
which are available to high-risk
seniors at no cost, as well as
their Meals on Wheels program
and their Bordeaux Center,
which offers high-risk seniors
health screenings, social services and educational programs.
These programs promote
socialization, which the report
identifies as a key component of
healthy aging and well-being.
Seniors who engage in regular
social activities are able to
remain independent longer, the
report said.
The Bethlehem Centers is
using its grant to increase its
Meals on Wheels program
capacity through the installation of a commercial kitchen.
The Greater Nashville Area
Agency on Aging and Disability
also provides funding to 19 area
senior centers. They can be

Steve Butler to run for District 34 seat

UP TO
Steve Butler, a native
Nashvillian and businessman
from Oak Hill, has already
announced his candidacy in the
race for Metro Council in
District 34. His recent campaign
finance
disclosures
revealed he’s raised $14,035
from 45 contributors, with over
$38,500 on-hand as of April 1.
“Nashville means so much to
me. It’s where I grew up, played
little league, achieved my Eagle
Scout rank, and where I went to
college,”
said
Butler,
a
Lipscomb University graduate.
“I’m running for Metro Council
because I want to make sure my
children have the same opportunities here that I did.”
With a professor for a father
and a school librarian for a mother, Butler said he learned the
importance of education at an
early age. As an adult, those values led him to serve on the founding board of STEM Preparatory
Academy, one of the highest performing public schools in
Nashville. He said his experiences with STEM Academy have
helped to prepare him for service as a council member.
“The biggest thing I learned
is that if a governing body cannot learn to find consensus on
issues, then it has no future,”
Butler said. “The council must
work together so that we can
steer Nashville's business
development, transportation
and education in the right
direction.”
His campaign platform also
includes a push to improve
Nashville’s infrastructure, from
restoring the aging water and
sewer lines, to supporting a new
transit strategy that has a bold,
regional vision with clear funding and neighborhood support.
He also wants to ensure that
Nashville continues to improve
its green spaces, which he said
are important to children and
families, as well as to the overall
character of neighborhoods,
especially in District 34.
Butler is an active proponent
of public safety. He said he is
proud of the police and fire
department, and wants to make
sure they have the tools needed
to protect our city. He is also
committed to making the roads
in District 34 - like Granny
White Pike - safer for drivers,
runners and cyclists.
“Our residents need to feel
their neighborhoods are safe
for themselves and their children,” Butler said. “We want to
make sure our kids are free to
ride their bikes and play in
safety in their yards. We can’t
do that without safe streets.”
Outside of his work as a managing partner at Teradata,
Steve Butler
Butler has played an active and
engaged role in the community,
serving on the board of Matthew
25 and helping to start new businesses through Nashville’s
Entrepreneurship Center. He
also supports many local preservation initiatives, such as the
Keep Oak Hill Residential campaign and the effort to save the
Charlotte Avenue Church of
Christ building.
He lives in Oak Hill with his
wife, Kimberly, their daughter,
Victoria, and son, William.
They are active members of
First Presbyterian Church. In
2013, Butler added “children’s
author” to his resume, when he
published a storybook inspired
by his own children called “The
Blueberry Bush.”

Driver injured after crashing vehicle into Green Hills Sweet Ceceʼs
A vehicle crashed into
Sweet Cece’s located in the
Hill Center earlier this week.
At press time, police had not
determined the cause of the
crash.
Shortly thereafter, the driver was taken to Vanderbilt
University Medical Center
with noncritical injuries. The
driver’s identity has not been
released.
The vehicle veered off
Hillsboro Road, and plowed
through the brick wall. It
stopped in front of the yogurt
shop, causing one of the window panes to shatter.
The store was not open at
the time of the incident. No
bystanders were injured, and
the surrounding businesses
were unaffected by the crash.
Located at 4031 Hillsboro

Two Rivers High School Class of 1965 celebrates 50th reunion
leading up to the reunion sharing memories on the event’s
Facebook page, which seemed to
help build excitement for the
event.
The weekend kicked off with
a tour of their alma mater, now
Two Rivers Middle School. A
barbecue and golf scramble kept
the former classmates busy
before the main event: the Green
and Grey Extravaganza at the
Nashville Palace in Donelson.
The evening included a tribute to deceased classmates and
the group’s 47 veterans. High
school memorabilia guided former students down memory
lane and a bound program was
passed around by some atten-
dees for signatures just as their
class yearbooks had been a half
century earlier.
The class which left its footprint on the Donelson community so many years ago leave a lasting ode to their childhood: a
limestone bench bearing their
graduation year will soon find
its home on the Two Rivers
property. A silent auction raised
$4,000 towards the cost.
“Time marches on. We wish

The year was 1965.
You could buy a loaf of bread
for 21 cents; a gallon of gas
would cost another dime for
families who could afford the
average car, which sold for about
$2,600. That wasn’t cheap for the
average family whose annual
income teetered around $6,500.
The Beatles launched their
British Invasion in the U.S. that
year and the newly-completed
Gateway Arch pushed against
the St. Louis sky. The “Super
Bowl” didn’t exist and man had
not yet stepped foot on the moon.
In a sleepy Nashville suburb,
the 174 seniors at Two Rivers
High School in Donelson were
preparing to be the school’s first
graduating class.
Friday nights in the fall
meant football games and cruising the Shoney’s drive-thru,
where teens by the car-load
would snack on single orders of
french fries and strawberry pie.
During the spring, “Pirate’s
Cove,” named for the school
mascot, was the place to be.
Hosted by the Donelson Lion’s
Club and heavily chaperoned,
these teen events were open to
all. They featured “combos”
bands which would play the latest hits as party-goers danced
the evening away–or until at
least 10 p.m. Rival schools
Donelson and DuPont held similar events, but class members
said kids “didn’t go to other
schools’ turf.”
The Two Rivers Class of 1965
prided themselves on having
always been “seniors” at the
school, which held its first classes in 1960 when they were sixth
graders. Two Rivers added one
grade per year after that until it
graduated its last class in 1971.
Last weekend, 130 of the original
seniors
gathered
in
Nashville to celebrate their 50th
reunion. Three teachers also
participated.
Reunion committee organiz-
er Pam Stuby Turner said they
were able to locate all but a
handful of former classmates,
adding that 30 members were
deceased.
Turner said previous reunion
rosters and Facebook had been a
big help in locating class members. Members spent the weeks

Gang enforcement initiative continues
to combat crime
Last weekend’s Operation
Safer Streets gang enforcement
and neighborhood safety initiative, which took place on
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,
resulted in 34 arrests involving
20 misdemeanors, two felonies,
and 25 warrants served.
At least twice a week, officers and supervisors representing each of the eight precincts
and the Specialized Investigations Division (SID) partner
together to implement strategies to combat gang crime and
quality of life issues in various
areas of Nashville.
Friday’s enforcement con-
sisted of five SID detectives,
four supervisors, and 20 patrol
officers. Areas targeted were
Edmondson Pike at Nolensville
Pike, Trimble and Lewis
Streets and Royal Parkway.
Saturday’s enforcement consisted of one detective, six
supervisors, and 18 officers.
Areas targeted were Dickerson
Pike, downtown Nashville, and
Old Hickory Boulevard.
Sunday’s enforcement consisted of six detectives and two
supervisors. Areas targeted
were
Murfreesboro
Pike,
Valeria Street, Boone Drive and
Whitsett Road.

Taxing
Matters
By Jim Wilson, CPA
No One is Immune to
Fraud—Even the IRS
has Problems
As I indicated in my article
last week, fraud is abundant.
No one is immune to Fraud. To
prove the point, the IRS was a
target of fraudulent electronic
transmissions. By now you
have heard that the Internal
Revenue
Service
(IRS)
announced earlier last week
that a "brute force" hacking
attempt has compromised
approximately 104,000 taxpayer
accounts through the utilization of the “Get Transcript”
tool located on www.IRS.gov.
The Get Transcript tool is very
helpful to taxpayers, because it
allows them to see the information currently recorded on
their accounts by the IRS.
Access to the tool is granted by
answering various questions
that must be answered by the
taxpayer. The questions include
answers that the taxpayer
would know, but not likely anyone else. Questions include
“Which one of the following
automobiles was owned by you
in a specific year?” “In what
city did you meet your spouse?”
“At which of the listed addresses have you lived?” “What tax
period have you filed most
recently and what was the
Adjusted Gross Income reported on that tax return?” Other
questions asked birthdates,
Social Security numbers and
other privately known facts.
How could such knowledge be
available to the hackers? Well,
hackers utilized information
gleaned from black market
sources to answer identity verification questions and receive
confidential information from
the IRS system.
The IRS reports that the system tool has been used 23 million times to provide taxpayers
important information about
their own tax accounts as well
as wage and earnings information. The hackers already had
access to Social Security numbers, birthdates, and identity
verification information like
former addresses and phone
numbers. They did not steal
this information from ‘Get
Transcript,’ they already had
it.”
Note that electronic filing of
tax returns did not create this
problem. The servers, through
which tax returns are uploaded
to the Proseries Tax Program
and then to IRS, are well protected. The problems related to
hackers are much broader than
that. Our office is protected by
Watch Guard Fire Box. We are
adequately protected, well—as
much as anyone can be.
The
Internal
Revenue
Service has said that taxpayers
whose accounts were compromised will be notified by the
Internal Revenue Service.
Individuals who believe their
identities have been compromised in this, or any other
attempt, should review the IRS
“Taxpayer Guide to Identity
Theft,” which advises the following course of action:
1. File a police report (yes, a
crime has been committed)
2. File an complaint with the
Federal Trade Commission
3. Contact one or more trade
bureau and request a “fraud
alert” (I suggest all three)
4. Close any financial accounts opened without your
permission
5. Respond immediately to
any IRS notice
6. Complete IRS Form 14039,
Identity Theft Affidavit
7. Continue to file your tax
return, even if by paper.

Pardon the interruption...
I’d like to issue a public

I was trying to turn onto

How insensitive of me to interrupt?
Leave Nashville alone
I for one am glad a
Republican can't win the
Mayor's race in Nashville. Our
unemployment rate is 4.1%,
meanwhile the state's unemployment rate has gone back UP
to 6.4%. Republicans couldn't
govern their way out of a paper
bag, and the way they've mangled this state is proof of it.

Bus Discrimination
I just moved here from North
Dakota. I just took the bus from
Bellevue to Old Hickory. I feel
like I was discriminated
against. The driver was black
and I was white. He told me to
get off at the Sonic and it was 15
miles from my destination, so I
had to walk two and a half
hours. I can’t find out what happened to my complaint, and if
they did anything about it.
Kudos!
Kudos to the Belle Meade
Kroger and its very nice manager Michael. The newly renovated store is wonderful, but the
parking lot is terrible. It is
extremely dirty, uneven hilly
and most unattractive. Kroger,
please level off your parking lot
and start over.

some of them but why all of
them? On a main road, you
should be able to go the speed

of them. Yet, not in Nashville!
You stop at one, then the next,
then the next and so forth. It is
bad when you see some peoplewalking and then notice that
they are ahead of you after a
while. I mean, if most of the
lights are going to be always
red, why not just make them all
stop signs and save Nashville
the electricity bill since we are
going to have to stop anyways.
I don’t know if they do it this
way just due to the lack of care
or if they actually are wanting

was no reply. After sitting there
for 5 minutes, I called out if
they were ready for my order.
There was still no reply, so I sat
for another 3-4 minutes til finally I decided to drive around.
The person at the window did
not know I was back there waiting to give my order and apologized due to their com system.
Sure glad I didn’t sit there even
longer waiting for a response.
Evidently their intercom is
malfunctioning and Wendy
needs to get it repaired!
Cultural zombies
The cult of multiculturalism
and social justice is making
more zombies every week. Now
we have the Olympic pentathlete Bruce Jenner parading
around in women's clothes, and
the cultists are insisting everyone play along. Don't call him
"he?!" It isn't so much what the
man does behind closed doors
or even in public, it's the spectacle and worship of it; the false
idolatry. Here's a little prayer if prayers are still okay I guess
- that somehow Nashville
remains a place of traditions
and faith, even as we are tolerant.
Welcome to fascism
The question of
why
Nashville needs to have a
400% increase in immigration
can be answered in only two
ways:
votes and money.
Basically, the odd couple of
Obama's leftist brethren in
Nashville Metro government
along
with
Corporate
Nashville see the same vision.
For the Demo- crats, buy the
votes with a free pass to citizenship. It will be the Dems
for decades to come. For the
corporates, it means bringing
in newcomers happy to suffer
a lower wage. Meanwhile,
Nashvillians battle for real
jobs.
There was once an effort to
instill some sanity, and force
immigrants to at least learn
English.
We can't expect
everyone to share our values,
but at least we could share a
language.
There was a time
immigrants were eager to
speak English and become
American. No more. A look at
the segregated neighborhoods
of any major city speaks otherwise. Now it's take a simple
citizenship test, and "se habla
Espanol." Well, adios Nashville. We enjoyed a beautiful
city for a while. Welcome to
fascism.
Stay in your own yard,
kids
School is out for the summer
and that means one thing: a
mass exodus of little people
pouring out of their homes
where they wreak general
havoc on their family’s neighbors. You know the ones I’m
talking about. They can’t be
bothered to look up from their
electronic gadgets long enough
to make sure I’m not about to
mow them down as they make
their way through the neighborhood via my driveway! My
kids have long since moved
away. I shouldn’t have to worry
about running over any in my
yard! They stomp on my flowers, kick up the dirt and leave
piles of candy wrappers in
their wake. In my day, we
stuffed our trash and apple
cores in our pockets; we’d never
dream of littering our neighbors’ yards! Parents, keep your
kids in their own yards. Kids,
open your eyes so you don’t
wander off and keep your trash
in your pockets!
ers, you need to be observant as
you enter apartment/condominium complexes. You need to
make sure that there isn't a no
trespassing or no soliciting sign
at the entrance. I personally do
not care to have a fine imposed
for trash/flyers left on my front
door!
Junk on TV
Am I the only one sick and
tired of the garbage we see on
television these days? The only
thing on the tube seems to be
reality programing. If a man
dating 20 women who are all
fighting over a rose and a diamond ring is reality, then, beam
me up, Scotty, because I’m
ready to go! Of course, my mailbox is full of cable and satellite
TV offers. Wonder which offers
a channel with Andy and
Barney? I’d love to return to
Mayberry!

good lesson for kids.
"The K-9 Unit is fascinating,"
said Jess Aldridge. "This is a
great opportunity for kids to
gain an appreciation for our
police officers and what they do
to protect us everyday."
The Canine Unit consists of
more than 18 teams that are
trained in patrol work, narcotics
and explosive odor detection.
Handlers are generally chosen
from patrol units and train with
their canine for 14 weeks to
meet the minimum 490 hour-certification requirement mandated by the United States Police
Canine Association. K-9s are
then considered full-fledged
police officers.
Last month, Gov. Bill Haslam
signed “Aron’s Law,” which
makes killing a police dog or
horse a felony.
The law is named for Metro
