PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Sheraton Doha Resort & Convention Hotel is a five-star luxury
hotel located in the West Bay area of Doha, Qatar, covering an
area of 10,000 square metres. Built in 1979, and noted for its
distinct pyramid shape, the hotel reportedly cost around $100
million to build.
The hotel underwent a major refurbishment in 2014 which
included the entrance of the Sheraton Hotel from the Sheraton
roundabout.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS
As part of the renovation of the hotel's main entrance, the
concrete roofs of 5 tanks, which make up part of the main
entrance road, required waterproofing with a fast curing
waterproofing material which would be covered with an asphalt
concrete overlay. The project needed to be completed within two
days.
Full area: 1,200 m2.
SIKA SOLUTION
Sika supplied the bridge deck waterproofing system, consisting
of a solvent-free concrete primer, the spray-applied, fast curing
Sikalastic®-841 ST membrane and the newly developed Sikalastic®-827
HT hot melt pellets.
A unique advantage of the Sika bridge deck waterproofing system is the
use of Sikalastic®-827 HT pellets which offer the “best in class” shear
adhesion to the asphalt layer. The results obtained are >300% better
than the minimum requirements to obtain BBA certification, the mode
of failure being in the asphalt layer. This membrane / asphalt interface
bonding system is exclusive to Sika and works by creating a mechanical
and chemical bond with the sand asphalt or the hot-rolled asphalt.
Sika Qatar successfully completed the project within the two day time
frame.
