Each participant produced two paintings. The process was to follow Tony's demo, step by step. In the morning the subject was a yacht sailing at speed under a wild sky. Step 1. Quick pencil sketch. 2. Wet sky area, light wash followed by stronger colours left to blend after blotting out clouds. 3. Heavy coloured washes on sea, leaving whites. 4. Darks on boats, sails and people. 5. Deeper varied colours on sea especially foreground, giving it animation. 6. Finish boat, give the people bright colours. 7. Complete waves and splash with white gouache. After a delicious shared lunch we tackled a completely different subject, an old hut in the bush surrounded by junk, no visible sky. This was more challenging to draw and decide how much to include. It was an excellent exercise in composition, perspective and tonal contrast. We had fun with the rusty iron roof, mysterious windows and doorways, planks going every which way, discarded tyres and a dead car. Darks definitely had to be painted first as they controlled the composition. The more loose and suggestive the rest of the painting the better. Don't get bogged down in detail. Kind, individual assistance was provided throughout the day. Two great subjects thanks Tony. I'm sure we all learnt heaps. Now to put it into practice.
