Volunteering
Who we are - What we do
We welcome new volunteers to help us carry out
practical conservation work in the Cemetery.
Come and join us every Tuesday from 10.30am to
3.30pm and on the first Sunday of every month from
10am to 3.30pm at the Gatehouse.
The Friends of the General Cemetery was formed in
1989 by a group of residents on Cemetery Road,
Sheffield. We have since grown in size and we are
now the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust (SGCT).
We carry out many activities within the Cemetery
including -
A gardening group meets every Friday from 1 to 3pm.
We supply tools, gloves and training and we also
cover reasonable travel expenses and refreshments to
keep you going! Call us on 0114 268 3486.

• Conservation work to maintain and enhance the
monuments, landscape and paths

• Restoration of the Grade II* Nonconformist Chapel
Our aim is to encourage everyone to enjoy the
Cemetery by walking its paths, learning its history or
simply visiting as a quiet place to sit and contemplate.
Burial Research Service
Our volunteer Enquiry & Research Team may be able
to help you in your family history research. The team
have access to over 87,000 burial records and
memorial inscriptions.

but we welcome donations
You will receive three fact and picture filled
newsletters each year. The membership period is from
the 1st January to 31st December. If you apply from
the 1st September the following year is included.

who succumbed to poisoning!

of the Cemetery with geologist
Peter Kennett.
Learn to make dens and practice
woodcraft skills in the Cemetery woods.
