Genius 3D mammography™ Frequently Asked Questions

Genius 3D mammography™
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I expect during the
Genius 3D mammography exam?
What about radiation?
Very low x-ray energy is used during the exam, just
about the same as a film screen mammogram. The total
patient dose of a Genius 3D mammogram is well within
the recommended guidelines.5
A Genius 3D mammography exam is very similar to
having a traditional 2D mammogram. Like a 2D
mammogram, the technologist will position you,
compress your breast, and take images from different
angles.
™
If you are concerned about radiation, please talk to your
doctor about whether the the risks are outweighed by
the benefits. The Royal Australian and New Zealand
College of Radiologists advises your decision should be
made in close consultation with your doctor.6
During the Genius 3D mammogram, the X-ray arm
sweeps in an arc over the breast, taking multiple breast
images in just seconds.
What is the difference between
a screening and a diagnostic
mammogram?
There’s no additional compression required and it only
takes a few seconds longer.
The technologist will review the images of your breasts
at the computer workstation to ensure quality images
have been captured for review. A radiologist will then
examine the images and report results to either your
doctor or directly to you.
A screening mammogram is provided by BreastScreen
Australia and radiology clinics for asymptomatic ‘well’
women. A referral from a GP is required for private clinics.
In Australia a Medicare rebate for mammography may
be available for some high-risk patients and those
referred to a private clinic or hospital for a diagnostic
mammogram.
A diagnostic mammogram is generally performed at
private radiology clinics and hospitals for high-risk
patients or women with abnormalities or symptoms,
e.g. a lump or other suspicious finding. A GP or surgeon
referral is required detailing clinical indications.
Who can have a Genius 3D
mammography exam?
In Australia a Genius 3D mammogram is usually
performed as a diagnostic mammogram.
Currently in Australia a Genius 3D mammography exam
is typically used as a diagnostic mammogram for high
risk women, such as the following patient types:
Why Genius 3D mammography?
Clinical studies with Genius 3D mammography show
cancers are found earlier compared with traditional 2D
mammography alone.2-4,7
 Women who have noticed any changes or lumps in
their breasts.1
It has been proven to detect 41% more invasive breast
cancers. This equates to 4.1 invasive cancers detected
per 1,000 women screened vs. 2.9 detected with 2D
mammography alone.*7 It has also been shown to reduce
the need for further testing by 15-40%.*2-4,7
 Women with a strong family history of breast or
ovarian cancer.1
 Women with dense breasts, e.g. women in their 40s
not actively targeted by BreastScreen.2-4
This means two things: earlier detection than ever before
and less anxiety about unnecessary further testing.2,4,7,8
 Women with a previous diagnosis of breast disease
or those requiring further assessment following an
inconclusive 2D mammogram.1
Genius 3D mammography allows doctors to see masses
and distortions associated with cancers and
precancerous cells significantly more clearly than
traditional 2D mammography. Instead of viewing all of the
complexities of your breast tissue in a flat image, as with
traditional 2D mammography, fine details are more visible
and less likely to be hidden by the tissue above or below.8
If you notice any changes in your breasts, or have any
concerns, talk to your doctor today.
