GLADNEY IS DEAD; OFFICIAL OF TVA
Rites Tuesday for Assistant Director of the Division of Power
Production
T. Harold Gladney, 56, 913 Brynwood Dr., died Saturday
evening in a hospital here. He was Assistant director of the
Division of Power Production with the Tennessee Valley
Authority.
Mr. Gladney was an honor graduate in chemical engineering
of Auburn University, class of 1939. He had, since 1943, been
employed by TVA in various engineering and administrative
positions, working at Hales Bar, Wilson, and Johnsonville steam
plants, as well as serving at Oak Ridge on the homogenous test
reactor for two years.
Mr. Gladney was widely known and highly respected in the
utility industry. He was the author of a number of papers and
served on various committees and special assignments dealing
with engineering associated with the industry.
He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ellis
Gladney and was a member of St. Luke United Methodist
Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Julia Gladney; two daughters,
Mrs. B. Farrell Cooper and Miss Cheryl Ann Gladney, both of
Chattanooga; three sons, Thomas H. Gladney of Louisville KY,
James Joseph Gladney and Ronald Kent Gladney, both of
Chattanooga; one sister, Miss Helen Gladney of Lanett, Ala.;
four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in R. J. Coulter
Chapel with the Rev. John P. Baltz and the Rev. Charles J.
Hurlock officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be E. F. Thomas, Sam West, John Holmes,
Charles Fussell, Harry Fox, Lloyd Hamilton, Clem Schonhoff,

Mr. Gladney was born in Wedowee AL, a son of the late James
A. and Lila Lovvorn Gladney. He was the retired local manager
of the Atlanta Gas Light Co., and a former resident of Rome and
Carrollton. He was a member of the North Broad Baptist Church
of Rome, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Nell
Vaughn Gladney. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Jo Bailey
Gladney of Calhoun; two daughters, Mrs. Tim (Sue G.) Haney of
Calhoun and Mrs. Melvin (Jan G.) Perry of Roswell NM; one
brother Lovvorn Gladney of Bremen; one sister Mrs. Hugh (Sara
Lila) Johnson of Carrollton; two grandchildren, Amy and
Mathew Perry of Roswell NM.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, 24 May at
the Chapel of Thomas Funeral Home with the Reverends Edgar
Padgett and Randy Mickier officiating. Interment followed in
the Carrollton City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were John Corley, Ford Davis, Hugh Johnson,
Jr., Don Richie, Wayne Branton, Lamar Crump, Richard Bailey,
and J. L. Henderson.
Honorary pallbearers were the retired and active employees of
the Atlanta Natural Gas Company.

Walter McDavid Reed is many things to many people. He

has the roles of father, husband, and grandfather. He is teacher,
mechanic, genealogist, and former pilot with 12,000 plus hours.
He is friend to many and respected by most. He is a sort of
Jimmy Stewart fellow and always has a smile for this writer.
Born in Lee County, Alabama, Reed moved with his family
to Anderson, SC where his father managed the historic Ashtabula
Plantation. After two years, the Reed family moved again to the
Lenoir City area of Tennessee where Reed recalls playing in his
father's car at the ripe old age of five when he accidentally
released the brake and the car started rolling. "The crank shaft
stuck in a tree and when I re-visited that place in the mid-sixties,
the hole was still in that tree," he recalled. That was the
beginning of Reed's adventure packed life. Reed decided he
wanted to fly airplanes when he was eight years old when a
plane clipped the telephone lines near his childhood home and
landed in the river bottom. "I was standing in my yard when the
plane landed and I ran, barefoot, through the swamps and snakes
and briars, just to touch that plane." he said.
After graduating from Loudon High School in 1943, Reed
applied for the Navy's four-year college program and was
accepted but flunked the physical because his "teeth didn't meet
in the front." The tall, lanky pilot-to-be then decided to take his
chances at the Aviation Cadet Aptitude Examination for the US
Army Air Corps. He passed that exam, in a big way, scoring the
highest mark up ever recorded. He attended Winthrop College in
Rock Hill, SC after which he started pre-flight training at
Maxwell Field in Montgomery, AL. He was later shipped out to
Moody Field in Valdosta.
Fresh out of pre-flight, Reed volunteered for flight training
and was sent to Carlstrom Field in Arcadia, FL where he soloed
after ten weeks in a Stearman PT-13. Shortly afterward, he went
to Spence Field in Moultrie where he learned to fly the T-6. The
flying school was closed soon after August 5, 1945, when the

bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
Reed elected to attend aircraft mechanics school at Keesler
Field, Mississippi. He earned his private pilot's license at
Gulfport in a Piper J-3 in November of 1945. That same year he
re-enlisted at Keesler and was granted a 120-day leave and a
bonus.
Reed went to Fort McPherson, Georgia for new orders and
was reassigned, at his request, back to Maxwell Field. That's
where Reed met his wife-to-be, whom he literally knocked off
her feet when he bumped into her at a skating rink. "She was so
small that I thought she was a young'un and picked her up," he
said.
Reed earned his commercial pilot's license at Allenport near
Montgomery in 1947 and attended Huntington College where he
majored in math and minored in chemistry. He also bought the
"biggest, most expensive motorcycle" he could find and returned
home to Tennessee on a furlough. When he got to Chattanooga,
a car pulled into his path and he was seriously injured in the
crash. It was three months before he returned to Maxwell and
proposed to the girl he had knocked down at the skating rink. He
and the former Jean DuBois were married in September of 1947.
After leaving the Army in 1948, Reed took a job as a loan
adjuster with First National Bank and continued his college
education while "still flying on the side" with cropdusting during
the summer months.
In 1951, he earned his flight instructor rating and his airframe
and power plant license. That same year he started cropdusting
with the Dothan Aviation Corp. He also flew newspapers during
that period, dropping the bundles in GI duffel bags into empty
lots for the delivery boys to pick up.
Reed recalled observing a tornado from a distance of about
ten miles while flying his papers. "I had to fly those papers
everyday, in rain, or shine or hurricane or tornado," Reed said

with a twinkle in his eye.
Reed recalled one close call while cropdusting watermelons
near Geneva, AL when he hit a terrace with his wheels and
bounced his plane off the ground. "I didn't shut that cropduster
off for two miles," he said.
Later he relocated his wife and family to Georgia when he
took a job as cropduster with the Albany Air Service. He also
started flying the Albany Herald to various small communities
throughout south Georgia.
Reed said once when he threw his duffel bag of newspapers
out, the bag became caught on the wire which runs from the front
of the plane to the tail, providing vital control. Reed could do
nothing to free the bag so was forced to fly back to Albany at full
throttle after issuing a May Day call. When he landed there, the
bag fell off but an Eastern Airlines plane, attempting to land at
the opposite end of the field, was forced to "take to the grass."
Reed had one or two locations where he dropped just two or
three newspapers. It was at one of those remote locations that
Reed decided to be extra courteous on a rainy day and throw the
bundle of three newspapers on the porch of the house. When he
swooped down to tree-top level, he hurled the bundle in the
direction of the porch and flew away. He learned the next day
that the bundle had crashed through the front door and traveled
through the hallway before taking out the back door as well. The
paper got wet anyway.
Flying those papers were not always easy, Reed said. He said
he had landed in winds so strong that he would have men grab
his wings as he landed into the hanger doors and when
cropdusting, he said he clipped at least one wire a year.
Reed recalled an incident which he described as "the closest
I've come to getting killed cropdusting." A telephone wire
became stuck in his plane's struts, causing it to roll. Reed
increased his power enough to pull the pole completely out of

the ground and even finished dusting the field before returning to
the airport, but he knocked out phone service to a whole
community.
He relocated to Dawson where he owned and operated a
flying service from 1960 until 1970. He joined the faculty of
South Georgia Tech in 1967 as an aircraft mechanics instructor
and later a math teacher. He started teaching flying at Southern
Field in 1973 where he taught hundreds of students to fly.
He recalled one of his students on his solo day who had to
negotiate an emergency landing into a field when his plane's
engine quit. There were fortunately no injuries and Reed said
the only damages occurred when the fire truck lost a muffler on
the way to the scene.
He said that women are the best students because "they're
more gentle on the controls."
The last day that Reed flew a plane was Oct. 27, 1984 when
he flew a Piper Tri-Pacer which was formerly owned by this
writer's father. Reed flew the plane that day with one of his
students for a lesson. Later the same day, Reed suffered heart
failure and underwent open-heart surgery at Emory in Atlanta.
He has flown since then with other pilots but not his regular
daily schedule. "I don't miss it as much as I thought I would,"
Reed said unconvincingly.
The Reeds have four children, Judy, a flight attendant with
Delta; Danny, energy manager for the City of Fort Worth, Texas;
David, a dispatcher with a trucking company in Jacksonville; and
Rebecca, a teacher in Albany. They also have two
granddaughters and a grandson.
Reed still teaches full-time at SGT and enjoys the county life
at their home off U. S. 19 South where you can find him
puttering around or gardening during his leisure time.

Mrs. Virginia Hollis Califf, 73, of 109 West Pyne Drive died
Wednesday at Hospice LaGrange.
Mrs. Califf, born January 14, 1924, in Randolph County,
Ala., was the daughter of the late Bruce and Myrtice Gladney
Barrett. She had made her home in LaGrange since 1941 and
was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She was
a retired employee of Milliken & Company and West Georgia
Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, William Earl Califf of
LaGrange; sons and daughter-in-law, E. Steve and Vickie Hollis

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dallis Fred
Hollis; a sister, Mrs. Onnie Lester and a brother, Bennie Barrett.
Funeral service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Trinity United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Floyd Tenney officiating.
Burial will be in Hillview Annex Cemetery.
The family will be at home at 109 W. Pyne Drive and will
receive friends at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary at 1010 Mooty
Bridge Road this evening from 6 until 8.

continued as owner and President to the current time. He was a
past President of the DeKalb chapter of the Georgia Society of

Athens, GA; brothers, Wallace Gladney of Lexington, Kentucky,
Virgil Gladney of Tempe, Arizona; and a brother-in-law and
sister-in-law, Lamar and Martha Rankin of Signal Mountain,
Tennessee. A memorial service will be held at Clairmont
Presbyterian Church with Dr. Thomas Pipkin officiating on
Wednesday, July 24 at 3:00 P.M. The family will receive friends

Teresa Aguilar Gladney, age 80, passed away peacefully at
Hospice of the Valley at Friendship Village in Tempe, Arizona
on Monday June 10, 2013 after a brief illness of cancer.
Born June 20, 1932 in Phoenix, Arizona, she lived in Phoenix,
Tempe and Mesa, Arizona. She worked at Saint Joseph's
Hospital in Phoenix and at Motorola in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Known to her friends as "Terry", she volunteered tirelessly for
numerous charitable organizations including The Boys Club of
Tempe, The Girls Club of Tempe, Saint Vincent De Paul, Red
Cross, All Saints Catholic Church and the Mesa and Chandler
Arts Centers. Terry also served on the City of Tempe's Tardeada
Advisory Board and was a Teacher's Aide at several local
schools. To all she met, she was considered a special friend.
Terry is the daughter of Juan and Concepcion Aguilar who will
greet her in heaven. Survivors include her sisters; Socorro

Jim developed Juvenile Diabetes when he was 6 years old.
For the most part, he lived a very normal life by taking insulin
shots daily to control the disease. While in his twenties, he
began having problems with his eyes. The doctors were able to
hold off inevitable blindness for nearly 15 years. When his
kidneys began to fail, he was able to do dialysis at home, for
which he was extremely grateful. In December, 1990, he
became very ill and lost a leg. In May of 1992, Jim died in his
home in Gainesville.
