The UR is the only university in this small, quiet region in Northern Spain. La Rioja is where the Monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla, cradle of the first words written in the Spanish language, are situated: sites included in UNESCO`s World Heritage List in 1996. The University of La Rioja was founded in 1992 and, as a center devoted to Higher Education, research, and cultural promotion, has continued the work of these monasteries in disseminating knowledge and the Spanish language. The University of La Rioja campus is on the outskirts of the city, but only a short distance from the centre of Logroño. La Rioja is a metropolitan area of 150,000 inhabitants and all the facilities of a modern capital, but with a comfortable, manageable size.
