Main monuments
Baroque Cathedral is the most impressive monument in
Murcia.
The streets and squares of Murcia also offer
magnificent examples of architecture, such as the City
Hall, the Victoria Hotel, the Romea Theatre and
particularly the Casino, built in 1847.
Water wheel
An ancient water wheel, used by the Arabs to raise
water to be used for irrigation.

• Its origins date back to medieval times.
• Founded as “Universitas Studiorum Murciana” by the King Alfonso X of Castile,
known as Alfonso X The Wise, in 1272 AD (see university’s coat of arms).
• Currently on its third refoundation in 1915.
• 10th oldest university in Spain.
• Growth in student population, academic offer,
research activities and university facilities in
the last two decades.
