InnSight [email protected] Dear Chattanooga Room in the Inn Directors, Staff, Volunteers and Supporters: One of the responsibilities of the President/Chair of the Board of Directors is to report on the current state of the organization as it emerges from 2013 and heads into 2014. I accepted the reins of leadership from Dan Cothron, who closed out his very successful term as President in June 2013. Thanks to a combination of yeoman efforts from the Board of Directors, the hard work and dedication of the staff, and generous contributions of time and resources from volunteers, I am happy to report that Chattanooga Room in the Inn (“CRITI”) showed a paper loss of only approximately $700.00 and, if depreciation were not factored in, actually would have finished FY 2013 in the black. 2013 saw the first full year of implementation of the Trauma-Informed Care model, which has been a striking success according to both staff and residents. The Trauma-Informed Care model has allowed CRITI to break free from a rules-oriented model in which staff and residents sometimes were forced apart by enforcement of regulations. Now, the responsibilities of residents are more clearly delineated and streamlined, and as a result, staff can focus more on assisting residents achieve life goals rather than monitoring residents for rules infractions. One of CRITI’s primary virtues is its boots-on-the-ground, hands-on assistance of homeless women. In 2013, CRITI was able to serve 40 women and 60 children, with 14 women graduating from the program. Helping homeless women learn how not to be homeless is one of CRITI’s primary missions, and 2013 marked another successful year of making a difference, one woman at a time. In addition to our past accomplishments, I am enthused about our future prospects. As 2013 came to a close and we moved into 2014, the Board of Directors began formalizing long-range plans. CRITI’s ability to serve homeless women has always been limited by physical facility and real property constraints, and the Board is engaged in planning to help overcome some of those hurdles. As these plans move closer to reality, a palpable sense of excitement can be felt in the CRITI community about what the future may hold. No missive such as this would be complete without expressing my deep appreciation of the efforts made by so many volunteers, which includes the efforts of staff that transcend their job descriptions. To all of you that have served as life skills coaches, prepared meals for residents, manned booths at charity events, donated your hard-earned money, painted walls, or made meaningful contributions in countless other ways, thank you. Those contributions have a direct, positive impact on CRITI, and CRITI could not survive, much less offer its clients the benefits it does, without them. As we continue forward into 2014, I am very hopeful that we can continue building upon the positive momentum we have generated. I, for one, cannot wait to see what we can do next! Christopher T. Varner President/Chair of the Board of Directors 2013-2014 Annual Report for 2013 Individuals Served * Children Families Served Average Length of Stay Graduates (total with children) 117 69 34 77 days 21 Graduates remaining in Permanent housing to date Volunteer Hours Match Value *Includes aftercare programs 95% 5,096 $25,480 Director’s Corner Dear CRITI Friends, Chattanooga Room in the Inn (CRITI) has been in existence for more than 25 years now. Amazing! If you weren’t able to join us at our anniversary celebration, you missed meeting two incredible women who helped make this organization what it is today. Christine Morrison, the founder of CRITI, saw the need for shelter for women and children in our community and acted on it. And Mary Holliday, who, along side of her husband, Pope, was able to recruit the support we needed to grow and sustain CRITI. 25 years later and we remain true to their vision for our organization despite all of the changes we have gone through. While we provide shelter, we also provide the tools and the support that the women and children need to break out of the cycles that lead them to us. And our programmatic shift to Trauma-Informed Care has reduced our client turnover tremendously! Focusing on our relationships with our clients, rather than the rules of the program, has increased the number of women going into permanent housing by nearly 25% and the average length of stay increased by 51% over 2012 figures. Women and children are staying with us longer and achieving more. Meanwhile, by not having to enforce the litany of rules we used to have, the staff morale has improved. This has created not only a safe place for women and children, but a happy one as well for everyone. Much of the credit should be given to you as well. Without your continuous support, CRITI would not have the successes that we have. Whether it was money, supplies or time you gave to CRITI, it means much to us here. Volunteers racked up a record amount of hours in 2013 and we were able to see a net gain financially when many nonprofits are downsizing or closing altogether. We couldn’t have done it without you…God bless you and yours! Over the past two years, you may have noted that CRITI has begun a new model of client care called Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). Traumatic experiences can have a significant impact on day-to-day survival and quality of life. Service systems often overlook trauma and its impact. TIC is a strengths-based framework that is grounded in an understanding of and responsiveness to the impact of trauma. This model emphasizes physical, psychological and emotional safety for both providers and survivors. It creates opportunities for survivors to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment. Adults and children may be misdiagnosed Becoming trauma-informed means learning how traumatic experiences impact the way people think, feel, respond and cope. It also means staff recognizes that certain rules and consequences can result in REtraumatizing or, at the very least, trigger memories of trauma resulting in disruptive behavior. without the professional considering the connection between current behaviors and past trauma. As children, nearly one quarter of single adults who are homeless… lived in foster care, group homes or other institutional settings were physically or sexually abused were homeless We also know Our staff has had extensive training in this model and has become very excited about the success TIC is having. Clients are thriving under this framework and the staff is finding many more ways to meet the needs of our women and children. that people can and do recover from trauma and CRITI’s goal is to provide services and service environments that support healing. 2013 InnVestors Despite our attempts to include the name of every donor, we recognize the possibility that someone’s name may have been omitted, so we ask that you call our office with any additions Circle of Hope Beacon Foundation Charitable Trust Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Water Grille Boy ScoutTroop 147 & Crew 2147 Catholic Health Initiatives/ Memorial Hospital Chattanooga Shooting Supplies, Inc. Volunteers Steven Berryman and Lorie Davis with ED Erin Creal Volunteer Spotlight Meet Ingrid Skantz! Ingrid has been volunteering as a Child Advocate at CRITI for almost five years. Every other week, Ingrid comes to CRITI to interact with the children in a variety of activities. She has also helped with special events such as fieldtrips, Christmas Eve Secret Santa preparations, and other outings with the children. Ingrid’s patience, enthusiasm, and kindness towards the children at CRITI is truly a blessing; she is very well-loved by all the children! Ingrid is the Director of Marketing and University Relations at Southern Adventist University. And Sheryl Baker! She has been the treasurer of the McDonald Road Church for over 17 years and has just started working as the interim treasurer for the Southern Deaf Fellowship. Sheryl is very involved with many of the other ongoing programs at McDonald Road such as, Women’s Ministry, Wednesday Night Out, Lifetree Café, and just about any social activity needing expertise on decorating and food including bereavement dinners, baby and wedding showers. She also serves on the Greater Collegedale School Board and is always doing something for her church and its members. In October 2007, McDonald Road Church Women’s Ministries volunteers began providing one hot meal per month for homeless women and children staying at Room in the Inn of Chattanooga, and soon Sheryl began giving Bible Studies on Tuesday nights with the ladies at Room In The Inn. Did you know...CRITI volunteers contributed over 5,000 hours in 2013? Just at minimum wage, that equals $36,250. Volunteers contribute more than a professional staff member would cost to CRITI! Current Volunteer Needs FOOD PREPARERS—CRITI CURRENTLY HAS FIVE VACANCIES ON THE CALENDAR. FOUR OF THE VACANCIES ARE EVERY OTHER MONTH AND ONE VACANCY IS MONTHLY FOR EIGHT MONTHS. HANDYMEN—WITH OUR MAIN FACILITY AND RENTAL HOMES, WE REALLY COULD USE A FEW GOOD MEN TO HELP WITH MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS. OFFICE HELPERS—WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO MAN THE FRONT DESK FROM 3-5 PM MONDAY—THURSDAY AND 1-5 ON FRIDAY AFTERNOONS. WE ARE FLEXIBLE WITH ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS SO IF YOU HAVE A TALENT NOT LISTED ABOVE, PLEASE GIVE SHARON COLLINS A CALL AND WE CAN MAKE IT WORK! Support Every year, groups and clubs hold events to raise money for Chattanooga Room in the Inn. We call them Benefits as opposed to our own fundraising event because it is the group who plans and executes it rather than CRITI staff. We are so blessed to have these groups host events for us. When staff members are planning events, our focus is on raising money when we really should be focusing on our mission. Organizations hosting benefit events allow us the time needed for helping women and children. Are you a member of an organization wanting to give back? Consider hosting a benefit for CRITI. This page offers some examples of groups already doing it for us! Above: Hope Alexander and Ann Law hosted the Vagina Monologues for Chattanooga Room in the Inn. They raised $3,000! Right: Scenic City Cruizers Car Club hosts an annual Car Show that benefits CRITI. In 2013 they raised over $5,000! Right: Every February the Chattanooga Track Club hosts the Scenic City HalfMarathon and 5K Charity Challenge to benefit several local charities. Runners can raise money for their charity of choice. Joe Duman (with Victoria Galen) raised the most for CRITI, $850! Above: A tradition now, Worley Parsons Engineering firm hosts its Annual Tournament 4 Care Golf Tournament (T4C).
