Department of Biblical Studies
#1004 – Effective Bible Reading
(Phase I COPP Course)
Instructor - Rev. Cecil Ashford
This course identifies methods and approaches to Bible study that can lead to spiritual growth and
Christian maturity. Areas that will be covered include the structure of the Bible, resources, for personal
study, and other subjects that will add meaning to the reading of the Bible.
#1007 – Introduction to the Old Testament (Phase II COPP Course)
Instructor – Dr. Lucille Green
This course will survey the Old Testament. Included in this survey will be a general overview of the
divisions, time periods, places, events, people and archaeology of the Old Testament.

#2023 – Creative Ways of Teaching
Instructor – Sis. Lourine Robinson
This course is designed to instruct in the methods of teaching in the local Church setting. It is designed
to assist teachers in discovering new ways of teaching such as learning behavior and, strategies of
student learning and behavior.
#2097 – Rethinking Christian Education for Contemporary Innovations Instructor – Sis. Juanita Taylor
This course will examine the current trends, methodologies, and practices in Christian education to
determine their validity and alliance with Scriptures.

#3008 – Theology and History of Christianity (Phase I COPP Course)
Instructor –Dr. Albert Calvin, Jr.
This course will outline the development of the Christian movement from the beginning of Jesus’
ministry on earth to present times. Students will focus on the history, theology, culture, and times that
enable Christians to develop and grow. Prominent persons who impacted the Christian movement will
be identified.

#6018 – Organizing the Church School/Sunday School
Instructor – Dr. Jacqueline Mack
This course will focus on the various administrative needed to direct the church school ministry.
Students will focus on a variety of administrative functions, to include recruiting, staffing, planning
programming, curriculum, budgeting, policy making, supervision, delegation, and evaluation.

#9004 – Writing Techniques I
(Phase II COPP Course)
Instructor – Sis. Shirley Cartlidge
This course will focus on the Certificate of Progress writing requirements for Phase 2. Emphasis in this
phase will be placed on the development of the skills necessary to complete the writing assignments.
Skills that will be mastered range from the development of paragraphs/topic sentences to thesis-driven
essays.

Seminar – The Writings of Paul
Instructor – Rev. Robert McCallum
This seminar examines the letters of the Apostle Paul and his importance in helping to organize
and communicate the major themes of Christian doctrine. Students will understand more of his
message, methods, theme, and the context of his writings.
Seminar-The Pentateuch and Its Relevance to New Testament Christians
Instructor – Rev.
Darryl Magee
This seminar considers the first five books of the Old Testament and their significance to the
New Testament Christian. As God reveals Himself and His values through His law, how does the
Christian relate to it as recipients of God’s grace? Students will discover more about the Torah
and what it brings to the practice and principles of the Christian faith.
Seminar - Apocalyptic Literature and Prophetic Preaching
Instructor – Dr. John Patrick
The apocalyptic scriptures are rich with God’s promises regarding the future of the church, yet
many Christians are lost regarding these biblical books and their significance to a full faith. This
intensive breaks down the mystification of Revelation and other apocalyptic passages and
provides tools to correctly interpret and teach/preach from this book.
Seminar – Biblical Foundations for Black Baptist Churches
Instructor – Rev. C. J. Rhodes
This seminar, taught from the perspective of the black church tradition, will take seriously the doctrinal
distinctives that have historically distinguished Baptist churches from other Christian
congregations, while also engaging contemporary, biblically based Evangelical critiques of some
elements of traditional Baptist polity. Highlights include the necessity of regenerated
membership in congregational decision making; the relationship between pastoral leadership
and deacons; the debate around Baptist bishops and spiritual gifts; and evangelism and the
church's social mission.
Seminar – Biblical Principles of Servant Leadership
Instructor – Rev. Eric Dickey
This seminar will strengthen those who have been called to serve in any capacity of leadership
within the church by exploring biblical principles of servant leadership. Students will learn how
to enlist and encourage ministry volunteers to accomplish the vision and mission of the
ministries within the church. The student will be challenged to grow as a leader by adopting the
servant leadership model of Jesus.
Seminar – The Kingdom of God in the Parables of Jesus
Instructor – Rev. Willie Tobias
Jesus offers clear and yet sometimes convoluted illustrations of the Kingdom of God through
the use of parables. This seminar will explore Jesus’ telling of these parables and allow students
to gain a depth of understanding that will strengthen their own faith and ministry of teaching.
