e-Sussex Broadband Rollout
Where and When in East Sussex and Brighton & Hove, as at 30/4/2015
 The following table sets out the outline plan for proposed rollout of faster broadband in the e-Sussex project area (based on
detail available (April 2015). Please note that this is high level information and we do not have accurate data at all postcode
or premises level
 There is a joint BT/ESCC project team in place who work closely together on the ongoing development, delivery and review
of this plan.
 Due to the changing nature of deployment all information is indicative only and is subject to change. Rollout happens in
concurrent phases (9 in total) with planning, surveying, and infrastructure build continuing in each phase. “The Big Build”
video in the News section of our website www.esussex.org shows how the new network is built. We may return to exchange
areas to complete works at different times: sometimes this is because there are properties that are harder to reach that will
need a different technology solution; sometimes a particular cab will need more work, for example, and may be put into a
later phase. Delivery timeframes are not guaranteed and forecast dates may move forwards as well as backwards

How are you prioritising areas for rollout?
This is a complex civil engineering project that needs to take into consideration existing infrastructure and value for money from the
public purse, all from an engineering point of view. We will also have to take into account other works, e.g. highways
improvements, so that we minimise disruption whilst keeping rollout going so that everyone can be reached as quickly as possible
How will I know when faster broadband is available for my home or business?
You may receive information from internet service providers and other channels when higher speed fibre broadband is available in
your area.
The information in this rollout table and the postcode checker on the website appear to be different. Why?
The postcode checker is based on modelled information that was supplied when the contract was signed in 2013 and which is a
high level guide only. The rollout table contains the latest information at cabinet level, not postcode level, which is updated
regularly as infrastructure plans are confirmed and delivered.
Once high-speed fibre broadband is available in my area do I need to do anything?
Yes, you will not be automatically upgraded. You will need to contact your internet service provider to discuss upgrading your
package to a fibre based package if you want to upgrade your speeds. If you don’t want to upgrade, you don’t need to do anything.
I have seen engineers in my area. Does this mean work is starting now?
Engineers make frequent visits to an area as part of their planning. They could be carrying out surveys, clearing manholes, cutting
down vegetation, deciding on best locations for cabinets and a myriad of other things. This is all preparatory activity prior to works
actually starting and could happen some time beforehand, meaning that seeing engineers does not indicate works about to start.
A new telecoms cabinet has just been installed in my road. Does this mean I can order fibre broadband now?
Before a new cabinet is ready to provide better broadband services to customers it has to be connected to the new fibre network
we are building. Installing new fibre spines tends to take longer than installing a new cabinet so very often you will see cabinets in
place some time before they can be used. Cabinets also have to be connected to power and a range of tests needs to take place to
make sure everything is working properly before we make it “ready for service”.
I have seen an article about new technology. What does this mean for the project?
BT and Openreach are developing new technologies all the time with the aim of pushing fibre further across areas, including those
that are more difficult to reach using more traditional solutions. The ESCC team discusses technology developments with BT and
Openreach, and all new technologies that are available are assessed for use although there would need to be formal agreement to
the contract to allow this to happen.
