Under the direction of the Communications/Electronics System Supervisor, this position provides technical support for the communication, security and control systems in place throughout the District. The Communications/Electronic Technician installs, maintains and repairs electronic equipment located at various District facilities from San Francisco to Santa Rosa. Such equipment includes, but is not limited to, two-way radio system equipment, microwave system equipment, PBX equipment, security equipment, Analog CCTV equipment, IP based video cameras and equipment, access control equipment and programmable logic controllers. The position is also involved in the installation and maintenance of communication and fiber optic cabling systems. Performs additional related duties as required. MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: • Requires a two year college degree in electronic technology or completion of electronic technology training course, certification program or electronics trade school • Must have a minimum of two years' experience as an Electronic Technician • The education/experience must clearly indicate that the applicant has the skills required to perform work as outlined below. HOURS OF OPERATION: • Subject to 24 hour call back • Must go to all District locations, including mountain tops, Ferry terminals and Bridge towers, piers, etc. REQUIRED LICENSE(S): • Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record. Operates District vehicles on a regular basis. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Analyzes and tests electronic systems, modules, components and test equipment to locate faults using test equipment, documentation and information from equipment users • Installs and maintains electronic arrow signs and light bars. • Installs and maintains CCTV systems, digital recording systems and video switching systems. • Installs and maintains motion detectors and related security equipment • Installs and maintains security system LAN and IP based security equipment • Installs and maintains telephone lines and fiber optic cables. • Installs and maintains programmable logic controllers and associated controls. Communications/Electronics Technician - PS100945 ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (continued): • Maintains, modifies and updates electronic PBX systems. • Install and maintain public address systems • Installs and tests electronic and two-way radio equipment in mobile units (buses, ferries, District vehicles) and District facilities. • Installs and maintains microwave system and data communication modems • Performs regular, preventive maintenance and records all maintenance actions performed, parts used and amount of time expended • Assists in the design, fabrication and/or modification of electronic/communication equipment • Updates and corrects manufacturers' documentation to increase maintenance and repair efficiency • Continue to update knowledge base in support of changing technology • Works with the Communication/Electronic Supervisor to repair, align and calibrate complex and special electronic apparatus • Performs related duties as required • Knows and follows the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to his or her job REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS: • Solid state electronics • Analog and digital circuits • Understands basic principles of LANs; • Installation and wiring methods of telephone and data communications systems • Tools, equipment and methods of electronic technology • Carry out verbal and written instructions • Work with minimal supervision • Establish and maintain cooperative, effective and productive working relationships with all those contacted in the course of work • Use personal computer and software • Knows and follows the safety, health rules and safe working practices applicable to his or her job • Work closely and interact professionally with other district employees • Regular and reliable attendance and performance is required.
