VOL: 8 WEEK 18 APR 30 2015 Published every Thursday.
CYCLE AGAINST SUICIDE - PLEA FOR PEOPLE TO SUPPORT ON THE DAY
The Cycle against Suicide for the first time ever visits the Mizen Peninsula on it’s way to
the iconic Mizen Head. Hundreds of cyclists will take part on Tuesday next and we would
ask all in the peninsula to come out and greet them. Their expected arrival into Goleen
will be at 11am and they will be in Schull between 1 and 2 o'clock. Please just come
along and support the team of volunteers and read on all about this incredible journey.
Cycle Against Suicide was founded by Jim Breen in 2012. It is a voluntary organisation
that aims to Empower people to seek help when they need it through the promotion of
their core message that 'it's okay not to feel okay and it's absolutely OK to ask for help.'
To Direct people in need to where this critical help is available, both locally and nationally.
Across the island of Ireland they partner with local mental health organisations in each
community.
To Break the stigma associated with the open discussion of mental health and wellbeing. Cycle Against Suicide encourages people to seek help and empowers
communities to work together to ensure those in need get the appropriate help in time.
Cycle Against Suicide assists mental health organisations in promoting positive mental
health and ensuring that people are aware that help is available locally and they know
how to get that help.
Together, shoulder to shoulder, we can break the cycle of suicide
on the island of Ireland.
THE CYCLE IN 2015 The annual Cycle kicked off this year in
Belfast on Monday April 27th and finishes in Dublin on Sunday May
10th. This is the first year for the Cycle to start in Belfast.
You can also follow CAS on Facebook over the coming weeks as
they progress, so please ensure that you like their page or follow
them on Twitter #@casuicide.
The Cycle arrives in Bantry on Monday May 4th at approx 7pm, where the Cycle will stay
overnight. Host families from Bantry and the Mizen peninsula have offered beds to the
cyclists including some local families in Goleen and Crookhaven. On Tuesday morning
the Cycle will travel from Bantry to Mizen Head.
Goleen will host a Sos Beag to give the cyclists and crew a much needed short break
before they head on the road again to Schull. Please turn out to support the Cycle as it
passes through Goleen around 11am or at Mizen Head around 11.30am.We will turn
Goleen orange for the day.
This is the second time in less than a month that Goleen has welcomed Cycle Against
Suicide during their quest to spread the message ‘it’s ok not to feel ok and it's absolutely
OK to ask for help’. (Continued inside)
(Continued from front page) West Cork opened its heart to The Run for Cycle Against
Suicide and Jim Breen recounted his day in his blog the following is what he said:
'The people of Schull mirrored the people of Goleen in their awesome welcome of the
Cycle Against Suicide Team. Last night in Goleen Community Hall, we were the recipients
of the best cooked meal that I have ever experienced. Served beautifully by Ellen and the
other volunteers, it was something I would have run two marathons for!' Jim Breen, 9th
April 2015.
Schull Community School is an Anchor School this year. Led by a team of student leaders,
the school provides refreshments and facilities for the cyclists as they make their way
along the route. Cycle Against Suicide joins with the school to create an amazing mental
health event comprising presentations, videos, celebrity speakers, entertainment and an
exhibition of local mental health services. MC GDCC

Mizen Rovers - “Route to
Crook “ The 11th ‘Route 2 Crook’ (5
mile road race from Goleen –
Crookhaven) will be held this year on
Sunday 16th August at 3pm. In recent years, Mizen Rovers under age GAA club have
taken over the running of the race from Goleen & District Community Council, who were it’s
original organisers, as a fundraiser for the club. It is a wonderful event for the area and also
for those here on holidays at the time, some of whom plan their visit to coincide with this
event. Over the past few years, the race has just about broken even. A lot of hard work
goes into the organising and running of the race. It’s future could be in doubt if more help,
particularly on the day of the race in
terms of stewarding, baking etc. is not
found and we would also welcome
new and continued sponsorship for
any aspect of the race.
Anyone keen to participate in
organising or sponsorship can contact
Chairman of Mizen Rovers, Kieran
O’Sullivan on 086-843-4146 or any
Club Officer. Thank you.

Regular numbers were augmented by the arrival of a lively gang of visitors from the
Caheragh Young at Heart Group. They arrived shortly before lunch, which was, as
always, a delicious three course dinner. The catering staff must be congratulated on such
a magnificent spread, especially with around seventy meals being served. After lunch,
local musicians, Denny O’Meara, Joan Notter, Timmy O’Sullivan & Derek Hare, provided
the entertainment, which
resulted in an
impromptu Céili! A great
time was had by all!
Many thanks to all our
guests, especially those
from Caheragh, our
musicians, for such
wonderful music & to all
the staff & helpers for
making it such a
memorable day. Next
week, we will be
meeting on Tuesday (due to the Bank Holiday) 11am - 4pm Lunch 1pm. If you would like
to join us & you haven’t already, please book meals by 11am on Saturday Contact:
