Contd from Front Page ROADS BUDGET CUT FOR CORK COUNTY COUNCIL Yet again
another blow for West Cork with the announcement by government of the roads budget of €36m,
down nearly €2m on last year’s figures. This drop in funding for roads in the whole of Cork is
another hammer blow to us. Again out come the so-called experts stating that it is a cut in the LPT
that is the reason for this. But again they fail to recognise the roads in Cork were being allocated
moneys well before there was an LPT and leading many to seriously ask: Why are we paying it
when we are getting little or no services? It looks like West Cork has been overlooked again on
any improvements to our N71 or the R586 roads, which have seen lack of any serious funds in
decades. This begs the question: Is there any one in Dáil Éireann fighting the case for us to get
serious funding for these roads? MC GDCC
Recent Deaths - Margaret Caverly, Munig, Skibbereen and formerly of Cork. Sadly missed by
her children, family, friends & neighbours. Declan O'Mahony, Lowertown. Deeply regretted by his
wife, children, family, neighbours & friends. Declan was a regular visitor to the Goleen Social
Centre & his presence will be sorely missed by all. A minute’s silence was held this Monday in
remembrance of Declan. Averil Glynn, Goleen. Sadly missed by her children, all her family,
neighbours, friends, her colleagues and friends at The Heron’s Cove & her carers at Schull
Community Hospital. Yvette Goggin, (nee Shadwell) Newbridge, Co.Kildare and late of Longford.
Deeply missed by her husband John, children, family & friends. Fondly remembered by the Goggin
& O’Callaghan families, Glaun. Our sincere sympathies to all. May they rest in peace.

PUBLIC MEETING FULLY BACKS ICSA CASE FOR FARMERS There were very few hurlers on the ditch
at the West Lodge Hotel where a public meeting was held by the ICSA looking for support to take a case
against the Department of Agriculture on the Single Farm Payment fines tonight. This case was first put
forward by the West Cork Community Alliance and huge work has been done on it. To bring it to where it is
today it was important that a farming organisation would spear head this legal challenge and the ICSA have
shown a willingness to do this. It was clearly stated tonight that there is no guarantee that this case can be
won, the same as with any legal case, but if we do not try, many small farmers will be simply wiped out.
Speaker after speaker supported the challenge. Some expressed disappointment at politicians’ lack of
interest in resolving the issue and their total lack of support for the farmers. It was stated that the Minister
for Agriculture in France not alone battled with Europe and won to get a massive reduction in the fine, he
then went back to his Prime Minister and convinced him to have the government take the hit on the fine and
not the farmers. If our Minister for Agriculture could show the same power, we in Ireland could have this
massive headache for farmers removed from their minds. This case will be getting massive support in other
counties as heads of the ICSA from many counties attended the meeting. Of course, the main reason for
the meeting is the case and Solicitor Brian Harrington gave a run down on the case going forward and the
hurdles to be jumped. Dermot Kelleher, Chairman of the West Cork ICSA, asked for a show of hands for
the case to proceed and got full support. But to take any case to the High Court there is a cost, which could
run to €100,000. So a suggested €100 or whatever a farmer could afford was requested from all farmers
affected by this savage cut in payments. Again this got full support from all present. If anyone would like to

showed how genuine they were as they all paid their contribution to get this case underway.
RECENT DEATHS CAUSE GREAT SADNESS IN COMMUNITY The death in Cork of Declan O’Mahony,
Lowertown cast a great sadness over the area. Declan was hugely popular and highly respected locally.
This respect was easily seen as huge crowds attended his removal and funeral mass in the Church of the
Seven Sacraments, Lowertown. Declan was a man who had time for everyone and someone summed him
up perfectly by saying that not alone was he a father to his children, he was a father figure for all of us. For
anyone who knew Declan really well you could know he was a man away ahead of his time. He had a
huge knowledge of all subjects whether it be Farming, Politics, Local Happenings or even could have a
very interesting conversation on the Premiership and the goings on between clubs and players. Declan
above all was a man of great faith; he attended his church and prayers no matter how busy he was. Down
through his life his faith was never put in to second place. As time went on from Declan’s busy life on the
farm, he adjusted himself perfectly in so many ways to retirement. One of the activities he loved was
attending the Social Centre in Goleen on a Monday with his wife, Patty. This day he could not wait for as
he loved the day from start to finish. On Monday last all in Goleen Social Centre, who loved and enjoyed
his company stood for a minute’s silence for Declan remembering a man who everybody cared for. To his
wife Patty and his family sincere sympathy is extended to you on Declan’s passing and what can be simply
put is a huge loss in our Community.
The death took place in Schull Community Hospital of Averil Glynn, formerly of Calnan Park, Goleen, The
Tower, Lowertown and The Haven, Schull. Averil had spent the last number of years in Goleen and had
many friends there; her passing will be greatly felt by her family, friends and colleagues.
The death took place of Eileen O’Donovan formerly of Caheriveranne, Lowertown and Ballydehob. Eileen
spent many years with her cousin Kit Attridge in Lowertown before moving to Clonakilty; her passing will

Table Tennis - Triple table tennis titles for Goleen team at tough third level test
at UCC Open. A Grades with honours for Erik Olsson, James Kelly and Mair Kelly as
they topped the tables in the U13, U15 and U18 events. James Kelly also scored a top
two finish in the U18s with Suki Kelly taking a third place in the U11s. Jasmine Kelly
also featured in the top four in the U13 girls and Niall O’Driscoll placed inside the Top
10 at U15 while Aaron Olsson took 5th in the U11 Plate event. This was a tremendous
all round display of talent from the team as a whole and coach Owen Kelly was
absolutely delighted with each player’s performance. Erik Olsson has consistently
shown that he was capable of reaching the pinnacle of table tennis in Munster, but this
is the first time he has been crowned Champion and it is doubly gratifying as it his first
season at this age group. Mair Kelly’s final victory came off the back of an earlier
round defeat to the Irish No.5, but her tenacity and resolve does her much credit to
turn the tables when it really mattered. There is no surprise news to James’s winning
ways, but his consistency and domination of the sport in Munster is unique remaining
undefeated for 3 years at the U15 age group and with his results at U18 indicating that
his renown is likely to be maintained, getting to the top is difficult maintaining it is even

Chance to train as a First Responder - The West Cork Association of Community
First Responders is made up of medical personnel and community volunteers. The
association is looking for 200 people to volunteer in the Skibbereen and Clonakilty
areas (100 in each area) to train up as community first responders. The training dates
are Saturday 28th February (Clonakilty) and Saturday 14th March (Skibbereen), the
cost is €10 per participant. The objective of the association is to join all the community
first responder groups into a support and training network, as well as gathering all
data on available defibrillators in the West Cork area. This will result in lives being
saved in West Cork in collaboration with the National Ambulance Service.
Responders are despatched as community assets to events such as cardiac arrests.
The Association also welcomes interested groups in the West Cork area who have a
group already set up, or who want to set up a group in the West Cork region. For
