Mizen Rovers v Iveleary U13 Rebel Og West League Final - This Sunday @ 3pm in Drimoleague A big weekend ahead for the Mizen Rovers club with the U13 footballers contesting the Rebel Og West League Final on this Sunday Oct 12th.The game will be played at the Drimoleague venue with a throw in time of 3pm.The Mizen lads will go into this game as favourites having gone unbeaten in the league throughout the season, but Iveleary from the Inchigeelagh area will provide tough opposition on the day. The Black and Amber supporters should be smiling at the final whistle though, because most of these fellas were part of the all conquering U12 team from last season, plus a few more good lads coming up through the ranks. The Club would ask you to make every effort to make the journey east on Sunday to support these young lads in their quest for victory. Connie PRO Goleen Table Tennis News Performances are often judged by results and titles won, however this would only tell half the story in the case of last weekend. Goleen players, Mair & James Kelly, travelled to the Cardiff Open, a Welsh National Ranking event, as part of their development programme in order to gain international experience. The goal was only to take part and get a chance to compete against new players to develop their tactical knowledge. However, James delivered a stunning blow and raised his personal bar in his very first match when he swept aside the Welsh No.3 with some ease. His relaxed approach brought out some of his best play ever and he recorded another major victory when he defeated the Welsh No.2 in the semi final. The U15 Final was a spectacular match with both players executing some very classy play. James lost eventually, losing out on the title, but the manner in which he played was only a portent of what was to come. Meanwhile Mair, who can be overshadowed by her brother, was also in fighting mood defeating the Welsh No.4 U18 in the group stages and setting herself up for a semi final place against the Welsh No.2. Surprising herself, she found herself dominating her Welsh opponent, attacking from both wings to stunning effect. The Welsh girl had no answer to Mair’s constant attacking play and was swept aside before a stunned Welsh crowd. Her opponent in the Final was Welsh No.1 and Senior International Beth Roberts, a player with a formidable reputation. You could have heard a pin drop as Mair took the first two sets. Roberts tried everything to counter Mair’s speed and pace and gradually started to pull back, but it was a toe to toe battle with each player having to draw on all their skill and ability. Roberts did manage to pull back and to take the final set, but every point was a fight. Was Mair disappointed to lose the title? It’s hard to be disappointed when you’ve played your very best and given your all. On one of the other tables James was drawing applause from the partisan crowd in his semi final encounter. He had already beaten 2 of the Welsh Top 10 to make it this far and he was again up against the Welsh No.1 and Senior International Ryan Oyler. Ryan took the first 2 sets, but it was surprisingly difficult for the Welshman to dominate his opponent and, in the 3rd set, James came out like a champion. Before he could even catch his breath Oyler found himself 5-1 down and struggling. The backhand James played to go 6-2 up was one of the most amazing shots I have seen in 30 years of coaching and drew a gasp from the crowd. He won the set 11-5, but lost the final set 11-8. Disappointed? The grin on his face went from ear to ear! Two 2nd places and a 3rd, not bad from two of Goleen’s best! The crowning moment was the compliments received by both players from a number of Welsh coaches, on not just their outstanding play, but on their sportsmanship and their display of pure joy in just playing the game. TOP AWARD FOR GOLEEN MAN IN UK A high-flying Irish lawyer was named global maritime lawyer of the year has dedicated the award to his father who lost his life in the Whiddy Island disaster. Michael Kingston from Goleen, a partner in the UK-based DWF law firm, paid an emotional tribute to his father, Tim, as he accepted one of the top awards in the prestigious Lloyd’s List Global Awards. His father was among seven local men who died in the Whiddy disaster. Michael, who studied history and politics in UCD, embarked on his legal studies in BPP law school in London after reading the tribunal report into the Whiddy disaster in UCD. He has almost 13 years’ experience in the maritime legal world, and joined DWF two years ago. He is a leading figure in the firm’s marine and energy sector, and comments regularly on cutting-edge marine issues, including international pollution, regulatory reviews, and renewable energy. He was heavily involved in examining regulatory reviews, and health and safety issues, following the 2010 Macondo oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and sank, with the loss of 11 lives. He was involved in regulatory reviews after the Costa Concordia tragedy. But his work since 2012 as legal advisor on the Draft Polar Code to govern global shipping operations in the Arctic and Antarctic played a key role in him landing the Global award. As part of his work on that mammoth project, he was invited last August by the US Navy and Nasa to work with them on a project, which uses satellites to reduce risk and improve safer navigation in Polar waters. The Lloyd’s List judging panel said Michael stood out as someone, who had contributed important work to an increasingly important area of regulation for shipping. His work on risk, opportunity and best practice in the polar regions has helped force these issues to the forefront of the industry and governmental agenda; they said. “His activity around the international safety regulations in the Arctic has helped produce an ice regime being considered for the Polar Code that will define maritime activity in this environmentally sensitive region,” the judges said. Michael also dedicated the award to the indigenous communities of the Arctic and to all seafarers, who lost their lives in tragic circumstances, and their families. Michael will travel to Russia next week to moderate negotiations between the captains of Russian and Baltic-based oceangoing tankers. Well done, Michael.
