attachment. A detailed installation guide for the Grabba driver and

INSTALLING THE GRABBA DRIVER
STARTING THE GRABBA DRIVER
FOR ANDROID
Installing the Grabba driver with automatic updates
using the Google Play store.

Open the Google Play store application
Search for “Grabba” and select the “Grabba Driver”
application.
The Grabba Driver will be automatically
downloaded and installed on your
Android device.
Installing from the Google Play store
allows for automatic driver updates.
FOR ANDROID
•
Connect the Grabba to your Android device.
•
Open the Grabba Driver application.
•
Press one of the buttons on
the side of the Grabba to wake
the Grabba and initiate the
connection.
•
If your Grabba has charge, the
driver will detect your Grabba
and ask for permissions to use
the Grabba.
•
Accept the prompt and
the Grabba driver will
display the model, serial
and battery charge.
Installing the Grabba Driver without automatic
updates

Open the Settings on your Android device.
Go to Security.
Under Device Administration, enable installation of
apps from sources other than the
Play store.
Visit our website at:
http://www.grabba.com/downloads/
android/drivers to download the latest
version of the Grabba driver for Android.
Run the downloaded file to install the
application.
The Grabba driver may upgrade the firmware on the Grabba
device. Do not unplug the Grabba during this upgrade.
TROUBLESHOOTING
ABOUT YOUR GRABBA
You Grabba device can have a mixture of different data capture
technologies, which enhances your Android Smartphone. There is
also an inbuilt battery that supplies all the Grabba’s power needs
regardless of which technologies are included in your Grabba.
If you experience difficulty connecting the Grabba and Android
devices or the Grabba software does not recognise the Grabba,
please try the following troubleshooting techniques:
Here are some tips to get the most out of your Grabba attachment:

Try charging the Grabba for at least 30 minutes.
•
•
Reset the Android Smartphone.
•
Ensure the Android has the Grabba driver installed.
•
To reset the Grabba, first disconnect the Android and any
charge or USB cables from the Grabba. Simultaneously hold
down both Grabba buttons for at least 30 seconds and the
green light on front of the Grabba should come on.
•
When this green light comes on, release the Grabba buttons
and the Grabba will reset.
To connect, plug the Android into the Grabba and Press one
of the Grabba buttons. This will wake the Grabba and initiate
the connection.
•
Be sure to keep the Grabba charged between user sessions.
Be sure to charge it at the end of the day.
•
The Grabba and the Android can be charged together (whilst
the Android is docked in the Grabba). Simply connect the
Grabba DC charger to the Grabba charge socket and both
devices will charge.
•
Your Grabba has an Auto-Off feature to conserve power. If
this feature is turned on (through the Grabba driver) then the
Grabba will go to sleep after a period of inactivity. This can be
adjusted via the preferences menu in the Grabba driver.
•
The Grabba will take from 1 - 10 seconds to connect to the
handheld upon docking. To connect (or wake from sleep)
press one of the Grabba buttons and the Grabba will wake up
so it can connect.

GRABBA KEYBOARD
The Grabba Keyboard is a free application available on the Google
Play store which replaces the Android system keyboard and
allows scanning of data directly into any text field on the Android
Smartphone.

Check the Grabba connectivity state using the Grabba icon
provided on the keyboard.
The Grabba Keyboard application is available on the Google Play
store by searching “Grabba”.
Once the Grabba is connected, press one of the Grabba buttons to
start the scan. The scans can be configured by pressing the Grabba
icon and selecting “Settings for Grabba Keyboard”.

Using the Grabba Keyboard
Open the Grabba Keyboard application and follow the
BARCODE READER
Depending on the model of your Grabba barcode scanner, it can
be used for reading almost any barcode type, including 1D linear
codes, 2D stacked and matrix codes, OCR fonts, postal codes and
can also capture digital images.
• Optimum read range is 4-10 inches.
• For small-pitch barcodes, move scanner closer.
• Adjust angle to barcode for glossy surfaces if having trouble
reading.
• Move scanner closer or further away if having trouble
reading.
• Sometimes you may need to hold Area Imaging 2D Barcode
Scanners still while scanning.
This data can be accessed by the keyboard wedge functionality
or through the Grabba Software Development Kit.
MAGNETIC STRIPE CARD READER
The Grabba Magnetic Stripe Card readers provide high
performance decoding with the ability to read badly damaged
cards with dual or three track capability.
• Use a consistent swipe speed.
• Ensure card remains flush against running track through the
entire swipe.
• Do not change the angle of the card.
• Do not swipe it with any curving motion.
This data can be accessed by the keyboard wedge functionality
or through the Grabba Software Development Kit.
SIGNATURE CAPTURE
FINGERPRINT READER
Grabba’s signature capture technology utilises a stylus input device
on a surface designed to mimic the natural feel of signing on paper.
The Grabba Fingerprint Scanner offers a flexible and cost-effective
solution for the fast and secure processing of high quality
fingerprint images in a mobile environment.
• Start the capture using a software button or tapping the start
area of the signature capture panel.
• Sign your signature on the line of the signature panel (note
that the captured signature does not appear on the panel).
• Stop the capture by using a software button, tapping the
stop area of the signature capture, or allowing the capture to
time out.
• Turn over to review the captured signature on the handheld
screen.
Signature data can be accessed, and interacted with,
by a software developer through the Grabba Software
Development Kit.
• Initiate a fingerprint enrolment using software.
• When fingerprint scanner lights up red, place finger on
sensor in the centre and straight.
• Lift finger off when red light turns off.
• Repeat each time fingerprint scanner lights up, following on
screen instructions for finger placement and pressure.
Fingerprint data can be accessed, and interacted with,
by a software developer through the Grabba Software
Development Kit.
CONTACT SMARTCARD READER
The Smart Card Reader is compatible with synchronous memory
cards and microcontroller cards supporting both read and write
applications.
• Insert smartcard into the right hand side slot of the Grabba
device.
• Insert with chip on the left of the card facing upwards, as
shown.
Card data can be accessed, and interacted with by,
a software developer through the Grabba Software
Development Kit.
MACHINE READABLE ZONE READER
PASSPORT / VISA / IDENTITY CARDS
This Grabba reads machine readable passports (MRP) and Visas
(MRV) OCRB encoded cards such as the US Resident Alien card,
European National ID cards and travel cards conforming to ICAO
Document 9303 Reads APACS debit and credit documents (APACS
standards 3.1 and 3.2), plus mixed E13B and OCRB fonts.
• Use a consistent swipe speed.
• Hold the passport / visa with machine readable text facing
upwards.
• Ensure the passport / visa remains flush with the running
track through entire swipe.
• Do not change the angle of the passport / visa.
• Do not swipe with any curving motion.
RFID / CONTACTLESS / PROXIMITY READER
Grabba supports a large range of different RFID tags and
contactless cards. These include low frequency (125-134.2 kHz)
tags and fobs including ISO standard and HID Proximity tags, as well
as high frequency (13.56MHz) contactless cards including Mifare,
I-Code, ISO15693, ISO14443A/B as well as HID iCLASS credentials.
• Trigger scanner with assigned trigger button.
• Place credential in close proximity to reader.
• Some tags may need to be in contact with Grabba housing
surface.
• This data can be accessed by the keyboard wedge
functionality.
Some data can be accessed by the keyboard wedge
functionality. Further RFID/Proximity card data can be
accessed, and interacted with, by a software developer
through the Grabba Software Development Kit.
WARRANTY & DISCLAIMER
The Grabba devices are manufactured by Grabba International Pty Ltd.
at its Brisbane, Australia facility. The Grabba devices have a 12-month
warranty from the date of purchase. Grabba International warrants and
represents that all Grabba devices are free of all defects in material,
workmanship and design, and have been produced and labelled in
compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and ordinances pertaining
to their production and labelling. This warranty is expressly limited to
repair, replacement of product or refund of product price at the sole
discretion of Grabba International. Equipment for repair must be returned
to the Grabba International facility in Brisbane, Australia or a Grabba
authorised repair centres. To do this, contact Grabba International’s
service/ repair department to obtain a Return Authorisation (RA) number.
CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES RELATING TO DATA LOSS, SUBSEQUENT
EQUIPMENT FAILURE, AND/ OR EQUIPMENT DAMAGE ETC IS EXPRESSLY
EXCLUDED FROM THIS WARRANTY AND GRABBA INTERNATIONAL ACCEPTS
NO LIABILITY FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE INCURRED WHAT-SOEVER.
In the event that it is determined the equipment failure is covered under
this warranty, Grabba International shall, at its sole discretion, repair the
product or replace the product with a functionally equivalent unit and
return such repaired or replaced product without charge for service or
return freight, whether distributor, dealer, or retail consumer. This limited
warranty does not extend to any product which, in the sole judgment
of Grabba International, has been subjected to abuse, misuse, neglect,
improper installation, accidental damage, nor any damage due to use or
misuse produced from integration of the product into any mechanical,
electrical or computer system. The warranty may be void if the case of
the product is opened by anyone other than Grabba International’s repair
department or authorised repair centres.
